In the past, enterprise IT departments used RISC and mainrame platorms to run
those applications most critical to their business. To help ensure high perormance
and reliability, many businesses were willing to rely on, and pay relatively higher
prices or, RISC/UNIX solutions and associated maintenance agreements. However,
a transormational shit has occurred.
Imagine the possibilities—an environment in which computing, networking, and
storage access resources are part o an elastic, scalable, lexible inrastructure that
can be put into action at any moment. Cisco UCS is the irst truly uniied data center
platorm that combines industry-standard x86-architecture servers, networking,
virtualization awareness, and embedded element management in a single system
that uniies inrastructure and management. Cisco UCS is a cost-eective, intelligent
inrastructure that simpliies and accelerates the deployment o enterprise-class
applications and services, enabling your business to be more agile and competitive
while simultaneously reducing the total cost o ownership (TCO). Cisco can help you
analyze the costs and beneits o Cisco UCS compared to your existing RISC/UNIX
server inrastructure to gain a clear view o how your data center can better support
your business.

Challenges with Aging RISC/UNIX Inrastructure
Data centers are ull o aging RISC/UNIX
servers that cannot support today’s
business needs. Costs associated with
purchasing, maintaining, and servicing
these servers continue to escalate.
In addition, very ew public or private
cloud environments are based on RISC/
UNIX servers, because the systems
are expensive, inlexible, and burdened
with complex system managementrameworks.
Reduced Cost Eectiveness
RISC/UNIX server acquisition and
maintenance costs are now a signiicant
component o IT budgets. On average,
the platorms have a 65 percent higher
total cost o acquisition than x86-
architecture-based servers. In act,
high operating and maintenance costs
combined with per-core sotware
licensing oten places RISC/UNIX
systems at a signiicant disadvantage.
In addition, the price o energy and data
center space continues to rise, making
eorts to power, cool, and house these
systems burdensome. With ewer
college graduates experienced in RISC/
UNIX administration, skilled personnel
are harder to ind and expensive to
employ. These actors, combined with
lat or shrinking IT budgets, are proving
that continued reliance on RISC/UNIX
architectures no longer is cost eective.
Perormance and Flexibility Are
Necessary to Remain Competitive
Successul businesses are aced with
a variety o challenges. More users
are generating increasing amounts
o data that must be processed and
accessed, with demands or additional
perormance capacity requent and
unpredictable. In many instances,
today’s aging and proprietary RISC/
UNIX inrastructure ails to deliver the
perormance, lexibility, and agility
required to support the modernization
o applications and the dynamic
demands o the business. At a time
when data centers are moving to cloud
or inrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS)
platorms, there is a greater need
or lexible, standard, nonproprietary
platorms and solutions.
Smart Inrastructure Todayand into the Future
Cisco UCS is a unique system that can
simpliy and accelerate deployment
o enterprise-class applications
and services running in bare-metal,
virtualized, and cloud-computing
environments, providing extreme
lexibility to businesses. Its built-in
policy-based automation and deep
integration with amiliar systems
management and orchestration tools
helps IT departments transorm
operations, making sta more eicient
and eective. Cisco UCS delivers
scalability, agility, security, and reliability
at a reduced TCO.
Outstanding Perormance and
Availability
Cisco UCS with intelligent Intel Xeon
processors. Intel Xeon processors
deliver cost-eective scalability, high
perormance, advanced reliability, and
the data protection that businesses
expect or their most data-intensive
enterprise applications. Intel Xeon
processors are designed to meet
business perormance needs, with
reliability, availability, and scalability
eatures equal to, and in some cases
greater than, current RISC processors.
Cisco UCS has a comprehensive server
product line that enables scale-up and
scale-out application architectures to
ully support business needs. Some o
the world’s most successul companies,
across a variety o industries, have
transitioned their most critical business
applications and database deployments
to Cisco UCS. You too can transorm
your mission-critical computing
environment so that it is ready or the
challenges o both today and the uture.
40 Percent Lower Costs

Decreased Operational Costs
“Ordinarily, expanding rom twoto three data centers would beexpected to increase operationalcosts by 50 percent. Our operationalcosts will actually decrease by 40percent when we expand rom twoto three data centers. A major reasonis the space, power, and coolingsavings rom consolidating rom 84 to30 racks.”

cost-eective industry-standard Intel
Xeon processors. In addition, the
uniied abric reduces the total number
o interace cards, cables, and chassis
switches needed by up to two-thirds,
lowering costs and complexity. Virtual
networks are now visible and managed
in exactly the same way as physical
networks, but with massive scalability
and lexibility. Cisco UCS represents
a radical simpliication compared to
traditional systems, reducing capital
and operating costs while increasing
business agility and improving
perormance.
20 Times Faster
Achieve better IT productivity and a
superior price-to-perormance ratio
or lower TCO with Cisco UCS servers.
Cisco UCS servers deliver world-
record perormance or mission-critical
workloads. With an integrated 10-
Gbps uniied abric, Cisco UCS meets
the bandwidth demands o today’s
multicore processors and eliminatesthe cost o separate networks or each
type o traic while increasing workload
agility, reliability, and perormance.
Faster Deployment Times
Cisco UCS is intelligent inrastructure
that is sel-aware and sel-integrating.
When new components are added
to the system, they are automatically
placed in resource pools, making
deployment ast and easy. The
system is built rom the oundation so
that every aspect o server identity, personality, and connectivity is
abstracted and can be applied through
sotware. Servers are conigured
automatically, eliminating the manual,
time-consuming, error-prone assembly
o components into systems. Every
aspect o the inrastructure can be
conigured dynamically, making each
server ready to power any workload at
any time.
Achieve 1-to-100 (or Greater) Sta-
to-Server Ratio
Cisco UCS eliminates the manual,
time-consuming, error-prone
assembly o components into systems
because every aspect o the Cisco
UCS inrastructure can be conigured
automatically and dynamically,
making each server ready to power
any workload at any time. Gone are
the days o sticky notes rom one
administrator to another, communicating
important coniguration inormation or
individual system coniguration. Cisco
UCS Manager enables, encourages,
and supports immediate, real-time,
and eicient cooperation between
administrative roles, with cross-role
visibility. This visibility provides a path to
the preprovisioning o critical elementsin the deployment process. The
inherent cooperative nature o Cisco
UCS Manager removes the traditional
data center management silo barriers,
which historically have reduced sta
eiciency.
Outstanding Perormance
“Our most important driver wasperormance. Perormance testingdelivered improvements that wereup to 20 times aster with the IntelXeon platorm than we had beenable to achieve on our existingRISC-based systems. We went romalmost 100 percent CPU utilizationto barely achieving 20 percent. TheCisco Uniied Computing System andarchitecture gives us a lot o room togrow.”
