Rise of the Planet of the Apes

August 6, 2011

A cross between E.T. and Resident Evil, Rise ofthe Planet of the Apes is a cute, cuddly chimpstory that morphs into The Great Ape Escape. Ifonly the ape leader grabbed a motorcycle andjumped some barbed wire, then you’d have agreat movie here!

One Word Movie Review: Good

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a

prequel to the classic sci-fi cheese-fest

called Planet of the Apes starring

Charlton Heston. That movie started

with the premise that evolution passed

us by and another “opposable thumbs”

species (human-like apes with rubber

faces) took over our planet. It was a

cool idea to riff off Charles Darwin

although the actual details about how, why and when

all that happened wasn’t explained clearly - until

now.

Now we know the rise of the apes as world rulerswas our own damn fault (yes, you kinda knew that,

didn’t you?). We humans can be damn stupid some

times, especially humans running corporations who

see big profits by accelerating the drug trials of a

smart cure for Alzheimer’s disease.

So, before you can say ALZ-112, the drug is out of

the bag and we have the set-up for Racoon City and

the dreaded Umbrella corporation all over again. But

first, we have the cute chimp baby coming home to play with grandpa (our lead scientist’s dad, who

suffers from, guess…yes, Alzheimer’s disease).

Soon, we have human trials of 112 on Grandpa and

quality time with baby chimp being so adorable

you’d just want to hug him all damn day. But

chimps grow up and become aware of how humans

use them as lab rats and we have the inevitableconflict between oppressor and victim.

San Franscisco provides the foggy setting (so we can

get the fog covering our apes escape against the

massed police force). The apes go ape-shit once they

get drugged into a higher intelligence level and

realize just how poorly they are being fed. Christ,

are there cookies in this world? Give me one!

By making the chimps so human, the sympathy from

the audience kicks in big time as the mistreatment

ramps up on these cute little chimps and we start

rooting for the beasts to escape and be free. Hey

where have you gone, Jane Goodall. She would be

proud of her gorilla primate in this movie.

So we now know how we lost “top ape” status in our

world. No, it wasn’t political or nuclear, but greedy

corporate profit that killed the beast (i.e. homo

sapiens).

The Story

James Franco (in another understated performance) plays

Will Rodman, the head research for ALZ-112. Driven

by his dad slowly losing his mind, Rodman is

aggressively developing his cure, testing it on chimps by

asking them to line up rings on pegs in something called

a Lucas tower test. This is a real test developed by

French Mathematician Edouard Lucas (and the number

of moves to solve it is 2N-1 where N is the number of

disks – but you probably knew that already).

Anyway, Rodman’s chimp Bright Eyes solves the puzzle

in 20 moves and gets everyone excited until she goes

ape-shit and attacks the board during the pitch to take the

drug to market. Frustrated, our scientist takes the

chimp’s secret love child home, uses his dad as a human

test chimp and basically breaks every scientific rule in

the morality doctor’s code of conduct.

His dad, being a great fan of Julius Caesar, names the

cute chimp baby Caesar (because he’s going to be

emperor of the apes one day) and off we go through the

passage of years. Caesar has to grow up, get angry, get

tossed into the cooler, plan his great escape and take his

fellow chimps from the cruel ape clinic (run by two evil

actors – Brian Cox (Col. Striker from the X-Men) andTom Felton (Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter).

The big ending relies on the stampeding smart apes (who

seem to grasp everything around them except the

concept of plate glass windows – which they crash

much with the set-up that you forget to tell a

compelling story. The recent X-Men prequel also did

a great take on re-vamping their origins into a James

Bond story of international intrigue. This Rise of the Planet of the Apes goes way back to

the roots of the ape intelligence evolution and sure

enough, we can take credit for their brain power.

This was not Darwin at work but our own ingenuity.

So much for 2001 and the bone tossed into the sky.

That takes way too long to evolve.

The mature audience that watched this movie with me

seemed to appreciate the role-reversals of ape and man,

the bit of sci-fi mumbo-jumbo tossed about and the

dilemma of ageing and losing your mind. That is the

really scary part of this movie, that we’re all getting

older and will eventually lose it. Now, where was I? Oh

yes, this genre is a growth industry for Hollywood to tap

into aging boomers and their love for nostalgia andsource material from their past: Coming up - Blade

Walker (prequel to Blade Runner) and A Clockwork

Grape (prequel to A Clockwork Orange). Can’t wait!

The Overall Quality

This movie lives and dies with the portrayal of the apes

on the screen and in this movie, they look fabulously

human. Using the same “performance capture”

technology developed for Avatar, the actors playing

the apes are rendered in exquisite detail. The child

chimp is light years ahead of  E.T., and you know how

cute that odd little critter was.

The rest of the movie is okay, with a classical scoreand human actors playing humans who are a lot less

interesting than the apes. James Franco delivers an

Oscar-caliber performance here, if you’re playing the

host of the show that is, staying on the sidelines as if

you really didn’t want to be in this movie.

Freida Pinto is a new face but she has nothing much todo except warn everyone that baby chimps grow up to

be big, strong beasts. Oh, and she looks really

concerned a few times.

Movie/Market Analysis

The Movie Mood for audiences is Positive.  Rise of the

Planet of the Apes is a technically great movie and

delivers what you’d expect as an audience member: lots of

great looking apes and the reason why Charlton Heston

returned to Earth to find it ruled by hairy humans. Oh, and

be sure not to rush out of the theater too fast when the

credits roll or you’ll miss Hunsiker’s big moment as the

carrier of the world’s demise, dressed so neatly in his pilot’s uniform.

MarketBOB's Movie Review Sentiment Indicators,

the GQS (Genre, Quality, Story) rate Rise of the

Planet of the Apes an emotional BEAR. Once

again, the human race is wiped out by a greedy
