Due to increasing costs of living, more Malaysians are oering suspended meals, where people can pay forfood to be given to those in need.

$ %&'()* of 25,!+2 students from si public universities in Malaysia has

revealed that more than half are left unable to aord a single meal a day

due to the rising cost of living.

 -he recentlypublished survey, conducted by the Muslim (olunteer

Malaysia $ssociation, found that more than 5 percent of respondents

cannot aord to spend M*'5, the e/uivalent of &%01.1, a day on food.

$pproimately percent reported that they only eat rice with egg, while a

further 1 percent claimed all they can aord to buy are pacets of instant

noodles.

 -he %tar reported that in many cases, students can only spare M*'1.5, or

+ &% cents, a day on food, meaning many are forced to sip meals and are

left feeling unwell. &niversityrun organisations have announced that

students are even fainting because they are so hungry when they come to

class.

 -he issue has received increasing attention from both the public and the

media since 3arian Metro, a Malay daily, disclosed that a psychology

student from &niversiti 4ebangsaan Malaysia had been admitted to the

hospital after suering from ruptured intestines caused by malnutrition. -he

student blamed her bad health on only having M*'+, or &%0!.+ a wee,

to spend on food.

Many student bodies are implementing programmes to help feed students

who simply can6t for out the cost of three meals a day.

Most of these pro7ects are drawn from the 8suspended meal9 concept,

which allows :nancially sound students to pay for etra food in advance;

4hairuddin $man 'aali, had suggested that the government create a fund

to help students cope with the rising cost of living by providing them with a

monthly allowance.

 -he lawmaer re/uested that every student be given grants of M*'1 a

month, on top of any eisting loans or scholarship funding the student is

receiving.

country6s most important assets in order to achieve bigger rewards

alongside $llah s.w.t,9 he went on.

 -he minister then emphasised that these poor and needy students were the

future leaders of the country, and they should be encouraged and

supported through their entire education.

<ther government oGcials caused an uproar by claiming that reports of

students struggling to buy food were sensationalised and do not accurately

reHect their current :nancial status. 4hairy Jamaluddin, Malaysia6s current

youth and sports minister, compared the issue to the region6s growing

problem with homelessness, claiming that it was unliely that students

were starving if even the homeless could get food through various

organisations.
