The Airborne Collision A voidance System (A CAS)has been oper ating in European airspace f ormore than 10 y ears. During that time itsperformance has been closely monitored b yexamining incidents that ha ve in volved A CASequipped aircr aft. As a result, EUR OCONTROL,in conjunction with the Centre d'Etudes de laNavigation Aerienne (CENA), has developed a PCbased tool: Replay Interf ace f or A CAS Aler ts(RITA2).

D e s c r i p t i o n

RITA 2 (Replay Interface for TCAS Alerts) is a tooldesigned f or the A CAS II tr aining of air tr afficcontrollers and also f or use as an additional, b utessential source of inf ormation to reinf orce theACAS training syllabus of flight crews.

RITA 2 provides the synchronous repla y of repor t-ed and analysed A CAS II (TCAS II Version 7)events, which ha ve been selected f or theirrelevance to tr aining issues , b y sho wing, on thesame screen, both what the pilots and thecontroller could see and what they said.

To provide high quality training, RITA 2 has been designed to show realistic control situations and to be easyto use by instructors.

Although it is possible to use it individually, RITA 2 is better used with the help of an instructor who has alreadya good kno wledge of TCAS II perf ormance and its eff ect in the repla yed events, so as to f ocus attentionon the impor tant points (i.e . the tr aining objectiv es of RIT A 2) and not on irrele vant details . The mostappropriate use of RITA 2 is through br iefing sessions to small g roups of pilots or controllers . The replay ofrelevant events with RITA 2 may also help introductor y presentations of ACAS II (performances, operationalimpact, regulation, etc.)

The display is divided into four parts:

controller’s view

the visual display of all tr affic, provided from radardata recordings and an y STCA (Shor t TermConflict Aler t) w arnings, on a gener ic controllerODS-like display;

pilot’s view

the visual display of the results of the TCAS II alertsby the simulation performed during the analysis ofthe event, on either an IVSI (Instantaneous VerticalSpeed Indicator) or an EFIS (Electronic FlightInstrument System), with the associated aur alalarms;
