To follow up on my first article in the Rite Words, I have set a goal for raising $5,000.00 in 2010 by holding another raffle. What a fantastic Christmas gift this would be.

Thanks to our good friend, Marvin Richter, owner of 5 Star Electronics, The Big Screen Store, located at Oracle and Orange Grove (see his ad on page 3), we will be raffling off a 42-inch flat screen, high definition television. The drawing will include the television, delivery and installation. This is a great way for us to raise funds for the many projects we would like to achieve this year.

Tickets are $5.00 each or 5 tickets for $20.00. Tickets are available from the Scottish Rite office or any of our Officers. Let’s all pull together to sell tickets for this wonderful prize. We will draw the winning ticket during our November Stated Meeting

Onward and upward—February was Rodeo month here in the Old Pueblo. We went western at our Stated Meeting—complete with cowboy boots, cowboy shirts, jeans, cowboy hats and bolo ties. Enjoyed a delicious meal while being entertained with some country music provided by the Old Country Buzzards. If you weren’t there, you missed a great time.

During dinner at the January Stated Meeting, I spoke about repairs to the Cathedral which need to be made. The major repair we are facing is the repair/replacement of the gas lines for the heating system. Several gas leaks have been discovered and Southwest Gas has shut down our system and removed the meters until the gas lines are repaired or replaced. By the time you receive this newsletter, we will know if the city inspectors will allow us to make repairs to the existing gas lines, or if we are required to replace all the gas lines. Either way, this will be a major expense.

I am coming to you, our membership, asking you to take a look at your personal finances. If you have any discretionary funds available, we certainly could use your help. The Cathedral Foundation is a designated 501 (c) (3) entity which allows donations to be deducted on your personal income taxes.

The 2010 Officers are installed and programs are in place for this year. So what remains to be done? If we sit back and let the year unfold without any effort on our part, nothing will be accomplished. We will not move forward nor will we grow. The time for sitting back and letting the other guy do the work is over - it is time for ALL of us to roll up our sleeves - go to work and make a difference.

All of Masonry needs our help - from the youth groups to our ladies’ groups. They need our participation. Each of us must look inside ourselves and ask: What can I do to help? Council of Knights Kadosh By Ill.˙. Michael T. Bishop, 33°, Commander

From the Synopsis of the 30° - Knight Kadosh, or Knight of the White and Black Eagle, we are called upon to verbalize our thoughts regarding our beliefs in all matters Masonic, Political, and Religious, indicating that we fully understand the principles of the Order. The beliefs must in in accord with the following:

Masonic - To believe in being a true Brother, in the performance of Duty, in undoing the passions and in aspiring to virtue.

Political - To believe in being a loyal, peaceable citizen, and in government of consent of the governed, with equal treatment for all.

Religious - To believe in the existence of a Supreme Being, of Infinite Wisdom, Understanding, and Knowledge, One who loves us and desires our obedience.

We also swear to always contribute to the propaga-tion and diffusion of enlightened ideas.

Albert Pike spoke of toleration, holding that every other man has the same right to his opinion and faith that we have to ours. He believed that to every Mason, there is a God—One, Supreme, Infinite in Goodness, Wisdom, Foresight, Justice, and Benevolence; Creator, Disposer, and Preserver of all things. How or by what Intermediates, Powers, and Emanations He creates and acts, and in what way He unfolds and manifests Himself, Masonry leaves to Creeds and Religions to inquire.

Each man has his own understanding and perception of Deity, and each of us is to respect his belief.

Your Journey Begins in 2010 Submitted by Bro.˙. Paul Weathers, 32°

“Why Become a Scottish Rite Mason?”

You took the necessary steps to become a Master Mason. You earned the right to become a part of the oldest and greatest fraternity in the world. Now you have an opportunity to expand upon your knowledge of Masonry, to widen your circle of acquaintances, and to serve humanity in unique ways.

Although there is no higher degree than that of Master Mason, the twenty nine degrees of the Scottish Rite serve to enrich the philosophy of the Symbolic Lodge.

A Master Mason who chooses to further his Masonic experience by becoming a 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason will be expanding upon the fundamental principles of Freemasonry. The moral and ethical lessons will allow him to be constantly reminded of his duty to God, family, country and fellowman. One of the things setting Freemasonry apart from other civic and social organizations is the opportunity for family involvement. As you have no doubt discovered through your travels thus far, the Masonic Community holds a very special place for all members of the family unit.

To participate, while Dad and Grandfather are off to lodge, the ladies and children can participate in the numerous groups designed especially for them. Scottish Rite provides a capstone to your family’s Masonic experience. While the Scottish Rite degrees encourage Master Masons to practice self improvement through more reflection, Scottish Rite activities also encourage self improvement by providing social and family activities geared toward promoting a spirit of unity and togetherness.

Have you discovered yours? Every man is born with a purpose!

Altan Kol Grotto By James W. Sebastian, Monarch

We had a great January Stated Meeting

with a wonderful meal beforehand prepared by my wife, Norma. Thanks Norma. Several pieces of heldover legislation were dealt with and now we are on our way for 2010. The calling effort brought many Prophets we had not seen in some time to our Awards Day, held onJanuary 24 th. Longevity Awards, Enchanted LanternAwards and Certificates of Service are all great honorsfor a new Monarch to present.

February was a busy month. During our February 11th meeting, a petition for reinstatement was read. We always look forward to new members. In addition, during the weekend of February 27th, we held our “Ladies Grotto Weekend”. This was a great way to show our ladies we really care about their efforts.

Mark your calendars for May 8th

nd

as this is our CANGA Picnic weekend in support of our 3rd Vice President and Past Monarch, B.T. “Tom” Dingwall. Tickets will be forthcoming and we hope for good support for our “home grown” leader.

I recently attended the Masonic Family Leadership Workshops and found a good group of young Masons of many ages who are bright and motivated. We will be trying to get the message of Grotto Fellowship to these men so when time permits, they may seek membership in our Grottos. Work is under way in two areas of the State to start two new Grottos in Arizona. First, a group headed by Prophet Dan Cantwell in the Bullhead City, Kingman area is gaining ground and Past Monarch, Prophet Tom Dingwall is spearheading a starter group in the Cochise county area. We at Altan Kol Grotto support both these efforts. WOW, wouldn’t four Grottos in Arizona be a wonderful thing?

We would like to thank the 2010 officers for their continued dedication to Grotto principles and our Grotto efforts in our communities. Officers of Altan Kol who are also Scottish Rite members include: Bro.˙. Timathy Davies, 32°, K.˙.S.˙.A.˙., Ill.˙. Bro.˙. Thomas B.T. Dingwall, 33°, Ill.˙. Bro.˙. Kenneth W. Smith, 33°, Ill.˙. Bro.˙. Robert F. Hannon, 33°, S.˙.G.˙.I.˙.G.˙., Committee Chairman, Ill.˙. Bro.˙. J. Michael Atchley, 33°, last but not least, myself, Ill.˙. Bro.˙. James W. Sebastian, 33°. We are proud of the tie of our members to the other branches of Masonry and look forward to exploring those ties in future articles. I would also like to thank all the Past Monarchs and their ladies for their continued support of Altan Kol.

Norma and I both look forward to Grotto fun and fellowship in the coming months with you.

Consistory By Bro.˙. John W. George, 32°, K.˙.C.˙.C.˙.H.˙.

The principal degree of the Consistory is the 32nd, “Master of the Royal Secret.” The question is asked, “What is the Royal Secret?” An answer is given in public, in the K.˙.C.˙.C.˙.H.˙. Investiture Ceremony.

We can look a little deeper, by asking ourselves what is meant by “secret”, especially if it is so readily available. I propose the word could mean “something you have to discover personally by study and experience.” I propose “The Royal Secret” is a trope for the lifelong process of finding things out, of honoring God by investigating and experiencing the beauties and blessings of the Creation, seeking an equilibrium between “book larnin” and hands-on involvement in the real world; between the everyday assumptions we accept without questioning, and questioning the assumptions we take for granted every day. Seeking this balance, cultivating this sense of discovery improves us in ways that go beyond the simple acquisition of knowledge.

Winter in our desert is like Spring in other places. Here it is February, and yards are overgrown with green. Growing in the backyard of the house where I live is a “winter weed” called London Rocket, a mustard relative which most of us are only too familiar with as something

to be pulled up and thrown on the compost heap. It disfigures our lawns, popping right up with lower leaves that are “broadly lobed,” meaning they look like miniature oak leaves, and tiny yellow flowers growing among the upper leaves, which are long and thin and look like grass blades or pine needles.

The leaves are tender and have a pleasant spicy/savory flavor, very similar to mustard, which is, the plant’s fam-ily. You can eat them raw in salads, or you can sauté them lightly, just like you would mustard greens. The plant is also used in some parts of the world to soothe bronchial afflictions.

I find it humbling, in a pleasant sort of way, to learn that a “weed” I’ve always assumed should only be pulled up and thrown away, is in fact useful and nourishing - a timely reminder that the Great Architect of the Universe has much broader plans for even the weeds than I might otherwise have thought.

Brothers and Sisters of the Masonic Family connected with the Scottish Rite, Valley of Tucson, I thank you for the confidence you have vested in me by allowing me to serve as Master of Kadosh for the year 2010. I hope most of all, each of us is able to find the proper balance between “book larnin” and personal experience which will enable us not only to serve our community, but also find happiness in doing so.

Remember to bring non-perishable food items to every Stated Meeting. We will be making donations to the local Community Food Bank throughout the year.

Every month, over 215,000 people receive assistance through their programs. Some priority items they are in need of are: canned meats, canned vegetables, canned soups, cereal, peanut butter, canned fruit, canned tomato products, meal mixes, such as Hamburger Helper or Rice-A-Roni, and condiments. Please check the labels for a current “best if used by” date on the items you donate.

If you prefer to make a monetary donation, please make your check payable to the Tucson Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation, Inc. For every dollar donated, the food bank can distribute nine dollars worth of food.

I would like to thank all of the Tucson Knights who served as Officers of the Order during 2009. However, as a service organization, the Tucson Knights of St. Andrew will have no lack of work ahead during 2010. Many activi-ties have been planned and a considerable body of work has been requested.

One of the first activities planned for 2010 took place on Saturday, January 23, 2010. This event was a Robert Burns Supper - a joint celebration with the Phoenix Knights of St. Andrew. As this event was a first attempt, there were many lessons learned However, the event was well attended with 65 guests

and performers present for the evening.

Watch for updates on other upcoming events for the Tucson Knights of St Andrew. Most all events are open to the public.

Around the Cathedral . . . . .

We would like to form a new group within the Cathedral - “Tour Guides”. With the opening of the Cathedral to the public this year, beginning with such functions as Tucson’s Downtown Partnership’s First Night Celebration; the Tucson Musicians Museum Annual Celebration of Music and Culture Gala Event; The University of Arizona Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity holding Induction Ceremonies; The Winding Rode Theatre Ensemble; two weddings; requests for tours from the Arizona Regency Society and a tour bus from Arizona Tour Company containing approximately 55 senior Citizens, the general public is becoming more curious about our Cathedral and Masonry. Not a day goes by without someone coming in asking for a tour and asking questions about Masonry.

The Tour Guides program will be open to members who enjoy interacting with the public; members who would like to become knowledgeable on the history of our Cathedral and answer questions about Masonry. If this program is of interest to you, please contact Ill.˙. Bro.˙. J. Michael Atchley, 33° at the Scottish Rite Office, 520-622-8364.
