Korea : Jeju Smart Grid Test Bed

• The program consists of a fully integrated Smart Grid System for 6000

households; wind farms and four distribution lines are included in the pilot

program. This demonstrates the extent of Korea’s commitment towards an

environmentally viable future.

• Korea plans to slash overall energy consumption by 3% and cut down total

electric energy consumption by 10% before 2030. The government also plans

to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 41 million tons by this time. The

government has announced that it will undertake a nation-wide Smart Grid

implementation by 2030.

• On January of 2010, Korea has taken a significant step forward in its efforts to

grab a foothold in the global smart grid sector, inking a tentative deal with

Illinois to jointly develop and test technologies for smart grid.

• Under the plan, technologies that are developed through this partnership and

are deemed viable for commercialization will be rolled out both in Illinois as

well as in Korean cities. The two sides agreed to launch a business model for a

smart grid on Jeju-do Island and apply it in Seoul and Chicago later on.

Italy: smart metering in Rome

Italy: smart metering in Rome

• Landis+Gyr and Acea Distribuzione, the largest municipal utility in Italy,

have completed one of Europe’s largest smart metering rollouts in

Rome.

• The implementation of the integrated AMM (Advanced Metering

Management ) system began in 2004 with the objective of improving

energy efficiency in Italy’s capital.

• The system includes high accuracy bi-directional meters and smart grid

applications such as network operation control, and the ability to

monitor low and medium voltage line status automatically.

• The system has been designed to be extended to gas and water meters.

The same system is also being implemented in other utilities in Italy and

abroad, including EPCG, the national electricity distribution company in

Montenegro, as either full-scale or pilot applications .

• CenterPoint Energy Houston Electric’s (CPE) Smart Grid project involves

deployment of a fully integrated advanced metering system and Web portal access

to over 2.2 million customers, along with installation of advanced monitoring and

distribution automation equipment.

• The project aims to reduce peak loads, overall electricity use, and operations and

maintenance costs while increasing distribution system reliability.

• The project implements secure communications to: (1) allow smart meter

customers to view their electricity consumption data whenever they want through

the Smart Meter Texas (SMT) data exchange, and (2) allow CPE to effectively

visualize and operate the distribution system.

• As a transmission and distribution service provider, CPE provides metering data to

retail energy providers (REPs) through the SMT data exchange.

• The project also deploys a more advanced distribution management system and

automated feeder switching, that reduces operational costs and improves service

reliability.
