CARSON CITY Carson CityHospital had a full house on Thurs-day, Feb. 9. More than 170 highschool students from the surround-ing area lled the front lobby for astudent reception showcasing thenewly acquired da Vinci Si SurgicalSystem.

    Juniors and seniors were invited

to test drive the future of surgery on ademo da Vinci Si Surgical System inthe hospital lobby. Carson City-Crys-tal High School, Fellowship Baptist Academy in Carson City, Fulton

High School, Greenville High School,Ithaca High School, Montabella HighSchool, Pewamo-Westphalia HighSchool, and St. Louis High Schooljoined in on the fun. After using theda Vinci Si Surgical System, the stu-dents received buttons that said, IDid Surgery! and gift bags.

It was amazing to see the dif-

ference between using the da VinciSystem versus just your hands, saidDanielle Lahay of Montabella HighSchool. You dont realize how muchyour hands shake until you compare

it to using the da Vinci System. It getsrid of all the shakes!

Taylor Friesen of Fulton HighSchool said, I was so excited aboutplaying with the da Vinci. I camehome and told my parents how sweetit was. Many of the students com-mented about the precision, control, and magnication that comes with

using the da Vinci System. To learn more about the da Vinci

What a great end to a wonderful season! The boys and girls played their nal games at West Michigan

Christian on February 4th and neither tea held anything back.

The GCS boys played rst again South Olive and gave themquite a ght. Down by double digits, our boys rallied back in thenal quarter to close

the gap to ve point. What a difference compared to the rsttime they faced them! The nal score was 23-28, with

South Olive on top, but our boys were clearly winners inour eyes. Each one of the boys ade huge gains this season andshowed great spirit and talent. We are very proud of all of you.

The GCS girls were a united front as they easily defeatedSouth Olive, the only team that beat them during the regularseason. They controlled the entire game, winning 21-9!!! Theirnal game was against Beaverdam and again, our girls playedbeautifully, dominating the game. Final score...25-10! Congratu-lations girls!!! It has been fteen long years, but the trophy homeis home! As with the boys, each of you grew your skill level andtalent. Our 8th grade girls, Jena, Kristina, Libby and Alyssa aregoing to be greatly issed, but we also anticipate watching theup and coing girls continue to excel next year. Great job girls!

Thank you for a great season. We are proud of you!!!

LETTERS TO THE EDITORWaiting for answers

TO THE EDITOR:In last months Township meeting it was

sub jested that there was a match going on between myself and Reynolds Township.I can see where it may seem that way butthats not my intent. After getting tired ofthe abuse and intimidation I decided to takea stand and to be more informed of what was happening in our community. Only todiscover that I was not alone in the Boardand Zoning Administrators treatment. Forthose whos been keeping track of the arti-cles in the paper or been going to the meet-ings I believe you would have to agree thisboard is clearly not representing the peopleswishes. Example: Our Zoning Administratornever backed off or agreed to allow ShirleyNorthrup to replace her home until after thearticles in her behalf appeared in the paper, after all as Mr. DeJong says, its no moneyout of his pocket. It seems that this boardand its members are going out of their wayto keep any information from getting outstarting with their own minutes of the meet-ing under public comments. They are so brief that youll never know what was saidor they just leave facts or statements out alltogether and by refusing ample time to al-low me to answer allegations that they madethrough their attorney. I asked Tina (Town-ship Clerk) for some information, I was toldto ll out a FOIA request only to be deniedby using the statement she does not under-stand what I am requesting and Mr. DeJongstated you got all your going to get from meif you want anything else take me to courtso much for before. In Januarys meeting Ipresented the board with two requests, therst was reimbursement of funds accordingto Ordinance 16.5 Fees. The second wasthe fees paid to the Township under Ordi-nance 16.2 sect. C Permits which was paidI believe was under intimidation and forcedinto purchasing when they created their own

Building and Safety Department which wasdone after I purchased the permits through

the county. l asked the board to respondto each of these in Februarys meeting allI received was silence, I will be lling outthe proper forms asking that these items be put on the agenda in Marchs meetingso the board can respond. The board keepsstating they are bound by an oath that theytake and also the zoning ordinance. I believethey have lost sight of why they were electedor appointed. They were appointed to rep-resent all the people and to use the zoning

ordinance as guidelines and in each case itshould be judged based on facts and the citi-zens wishes. In the last few cases there wasabsolutely no objections other than from ourboard members so they choose not to listento the people. If you dont get involved yoursending a signal to the board that they cando anything they want, is this what we wantin our township?

    Votes yes for sheriffsdepartment millage

Constant economic stress from the loss

of major employers in Montcalm Countyhas necessitated yearly cuts to the MontcalmCounty budget. All areas of the budget havebeen affected; however, most critical are thereductions to the Montcalm County SheriffsDepartment budget, which directly impactsthe safety and security of our community.

In the Howard City/Panhandle area ofthe county, the Montcalm County SheriffsDepartment is the only 24-hour coveragecurrently in existence. The ofcers of theHoward City Police Dept. and the MichiganState Police currently work a restricted num-ber of hours due to budgetary constraints. Inaddition, our State Police Post assists withcoverage within a three county area - Mont-calm, Gratiot and Ionia. In my opinion, wecannot afford to ignore the call for additional

funding for our police protection. The sup-port and necessity for additional millage for

police protection is a must have for ourcommunity.

Last years budget cuts included wagefreezes, union concessions in pay and ben-ets and additional layoffs to the SheriffsDepartment. When the county eliminated$1.3 million from its budget, $400,000came from the Sheriffs Department alone, resulting in further cuts in stafng withinroad patrol and court security. Next year theprojected cuts, very likely, will include fur-

ther reductions in road patrol ofcers andthe elimination of 24/7 police coverage forMontcalm County. Recently, the AttorneyGeneral has proposed that he will reinstate1,000 ofcers; however, our state is down by2,000 ofcers. In addition, last year approxi-mately 10,000 Michigan prisoners were re-leased or paroled early.

The request is for 1 mill for ve years, which will be dedicated to the Sheriffs De-partment to restore up to four additionaldeputies to bring the stafng level back tothe 2002 level. If you are in need of emer-gency assistance from the police department, you do NOT want to be told that the nearestofcer is in Carson City or Greenville or thatyour call will be handled in the morning whenan ofcer comes on duty. Additional ofcers

on staff will help alleviate such issues. Theadditional funding will be a separate funddedicated to stafng ofcers, training andcapital equipment for ofcers.

No one likes the idea of increased taxes. However, if you need the assistance of a po-lice ofcer, then its usually an emergency. Ihate the thought of being told by a 911 dis-patcher that on one is available to help myfamily, friends or fellow community mem-bers. If you are in a situation that either youor a loved one needs police assistance, thecost does not seem to matter much. Thatthought, for me, makes it much easier to sup-port this millage request.

Please join me in VOTING YES for theMontcalm County Sheriffs Department mill-age.
