Live theatre has it all – ideas, dance, colour, music, play, communication, stimulation and a chance for children to engage their imagination and sense of whimsy.Children are inspired, enchanted and challenged by the power of theatre where a story book can come to life on stage through the skills of professional performers, colourful sets and costumes, music, songs and lighting.Riverside has been introducing school students to the magic of theatre for 25 years. Each production is carefully selected to entertain and educate with plenty of ideas to explore before and after performances. From the Education Coordinator…Relationships between children and their grandparents, or members of their families or communities who are in the older generations, can be so important for their social development and can broaden their understanding of the world around them. This show brings with it all the magic of Grandparents along with some wonderful stories and engaging theatrical elements such as puppetry and music. Who can resist a good story; especially when it’s being told by Gran?

When Gran comes to visit, she brings her beautiful big red bag. It is a treasure trove of secrets and small delights. All sorts of surprises emerge, and lots of great stories. The best story of all is about how Gran found her magic carpet bag – or did her bag find her? Chrissie Shaw brings the tale to life as the larger than life Gran and pulls the entire show out of her giant red handbag – which seems to have a life of its own. With storytelling, songs, and puppetry, Gran takes us on a fun adventure full of twists and turns. You never know where the story will go next.

From the team that brought us the hugely successful The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child comes another brilliant stage adaptation of a classic tale. This time it’s Room On The Broom, filled with songs, laughs and scary fun for primary aged students.

Room on the Broom tells the tale of a friendly witch who takes her broom for a spin, losing her hat, her bow, and her wand in the process, but finding new friends along the way who help her out.

The witch and her cat are flying happily along on their broomstick when a stormy wind blows the witch’s hat, bow and wand away into the night. With the help of a daft dog, a beautiful bird and a friendly frog, her belongings are retrieved. But this broomstick’s not meant for five and – CRACK! - the broom snaps in two! When a hungry dragon appears, who will save the poor witch? And will there ever be room on the broom for everyone?

An intimate and joyful introduction to orchestral music for early primary students.

The Four Seasons is Vivaldi’s best-known work, and is among the most popular pieces of Baroque music. Performed live by The Primary Proms Orchestra, the music will take students on a journey through the seasons where a young boy discovers the delights and difficulties of Mother Nature.

In this rich musical experience students will have the opportunity to meet the musicians and be introduced to the instruments and their sounds, from the silvery pizzicato notes of winter to the dramatic final movement of the summer thunderstorm.

The Sydney Opera House Proms have now come to Riverside after running for more than 30 years at the Sydney Opera House. It remains the perfect introduction for youngsters to the joys of live performance and storytelling in a relaxed, informal and interactive environment.

Sydney Writers’ Festival invites teachers and their students to join us for School Days in May 2013. School Days is a celebration of literature for children and young adults, featuring a handpicked line-up of writers for primary schools.

Teachers, this is a fantastic opportunity for students to engage with their favourite authors, discover exciting new voices and be inspired in a fun, educational and interactive day. In these hugely popular sessions, writers and illustrators will perform, read from their work, talk about their craft and take questions from the audience.

Our Primary School Days line-up features award-winning authors: Brian Falkner, Sally Rippin and Jackie French, and writer-illustrator collaboration Nick Earls and Terry Whidborne.

School Days brings literature to life, offering students a chance to meet the people behind the stories they love. Books by participating writers will be available for purchase from the Gleebooks Festival Bookshop at each venue.

Each September during the school holiday break Riverside opens its doors for a week-long event filled with family-orientated theatre, live music and activities.

Experience live theatre and concerts and let the kids run wild before and after the shows in our FREE indoor playground and activities.

This year, the highlight of SPOT ON will be Monkey Baa’s stage adaptation of Emily EyEfingEr!

Adapted from the popular book series by Duncan Ball, Emily Eyefinger is the story of a gifted young girl. Born with an extraordinary gift – an eye at the end of her finger. She struggles with being different but also discovers that with her third eye she can solve mysteries, see round corners, rescue friends, and catch dangerous criminals. In fact it’s very handy and an adventure looms at every corner.

This is 55 minutes of pure enjoyment, silly antics and good old-fashioned fun for the whole family as Emily, with her best friend Malcolm, Great Aunt Olympia and other chums, embarks on her biggest journey yet, solving the mystery of the Tomb of Tutenkamouse!

This is a lighthearted joyous work with resonating themes of identity, respect, self worth and friendship. Suitable for children aged 5 - 10 years

We believe that all students should have access to quality educational arts experiences, regardless of their circumstances, and are delighted to provide a program that may enable this to happen.

What schools are eligible? Schools that are identified as “Priority Funded” schools by DEC.

What do we get? $12 off the ticket price.

VISITING RIVERSIDE ThEATRES & CONNECT STUDIOSPlease ensure your group arrives a minimum of 30 minutes prior to the start of the event. Latecomers will be admitted in a suitable break in the event. Riverside Theatres encourages students to leave bags at home or at school as secure storage is not generally available. Restrooms are located at both ends of the foyer for students including those requiring disabled access. Hearing loops are installed in all theatres, but those requiring headsets should book them in advance. Riverside Theatres encourages young people to attend live performances but reserves the right to ask a patron to leave if their behaviour is deemed disruptive to the performance. The support and assistance of teaching staff is always appreciated.

Please advise your students clearly of theatre etiquette and expectations of live performance prior to your visit to Riverside, including:

If you are from a Priority Funded School, please contact us regarding possible ticket subsidies that may be available to you.

NB Please do not send any payments with your booking form. Riverside will confirm your booking and then forward an invoice for your deposit. Bookings are made in strict order of receipt of booking form.

STEP 3 Riverside will confirm your booking: Riverside will confirm your booking and invoice the school for a $125 deposit. Teachers receive complimentary seating on a 20:1 ratio (unless otherwise specified). Once you have paid your deposit, your booking is secure. You can request changes to student numbers up to four (4) weeks prior to the performance date. Final payment must be received within this time period. Failure to do so will result in your booking being cancelled and your deposit forfeited.

STEP 4 Final payment: Riverside will invoice you for the balance, payable 4 school weeks before your performance or workshop date. At that stage student numbers are final. Bookings cannot be held if your final payment is not received and the deposit is forfeited. An increase of numbers is possible after the final payment day and is subject to availability.

STEP 5 Final information sent to schools: A letter of confirmation will be issued instead of individual tickets if you are attending a performance that has been allocated as a schools matinee. For other general public performances, you will be issued with tickets which you will be required to collect from Box Office before the performance. Prior to your visit, we will send you detailed information via email to ensure you have a hassle-free excursion. This will include updating you on any possible changes to times or more detailed information as it emerges from the rehearsal process. Please ensure you have given a valid email address on your booking form.

STEP 6 Attend and enjoy! Seating at schools performances is general admission and schools will be asked to enter the theatre as a group. We advise arriving at the theatre approximately 30 minutes prior to the performance.
