We have added a new member to our leadership team at Riverside High School! Mr. Bryson Davis-Johnson has joined us as a Dean of Students. Mr. Johnson (as we will refer to him) will join the office of the Assistant Head of School to support positive school culture and student development. He comes to Riverside High School after serving as a teacher and basketball coach at Perry Meridian High School. Prior to Perry, Johnson spent three seasons with the University of Indianapolis men’s basketball team as an assistant coach while he pursued a graduate degree in sport management. Before relocating to Indy, Mr. Johnson taught and coached basketball in Illinois. Mr. Johnson was a student athlete for most of his own educational career. He played one year of Division III basketball at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, before receiving his undergraduate degree from Eastern Illinois University. A native of Champaign, Illinois, Johnson played four years of basketball at Centennial High School. As a high school senior, Johnson was the co-captain of a team that went on to win the IHSA class 3A state championship. Throughout the interview process, Mr. Johnson made an impression with his warm demeanor, obvious work-ethic and ambition, and relational skill. At Riverside, Mr. Johnson will work alongside our leadership team to support student success. Specifically, Mr. Johnson will spearhead building and maintaining positive school culture, including student leadership development, interpersonal skill building, conflict mediation, and problem solving. We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Johnson to the Argonaut family! Look for upcoming opportunities to meet Mr. Johnson; we can’t wait for him to get to know your families, too! RIVERSIDE HIGH SCHOOL A Second Campus of Herron High School

Weekly UpdateFebruary 3, 2020

Dear Riverside Families,

I am so pleased to make an introduction in this week’s newsletter.

I hope to see many of you at Parent Teacher Conferences on February 12 and 13, from 3:00 – 7:00.

Please note upcoming calendar changes, too, for March 5, 6, and April 16, 17. These will be our ISTEP testing days for 10th graders, and 9th, 11th, and 12th graders will have e-learning days from home.

Go Argonauts!

Upcoming Calendar Change Due to state required ISTEP+ Grade 10 testing, there is a change to our upcoming school calendar. March 5th, March 6th, April 16th and April 17th are now ISTEP+ Testing days. Sophomores will be on a half day to complete ISTEP+ testing; more information and your Sophomore's specific testing time to follow. Freshmen, Juniors, and Seniors will have an e-Learning day on those days.

In the past we have been able to complete ISTEP+ Grade 10 testing in a three-hour window that only required a delayed start to the school day. However, this year the ISTEP+ Grade 10 assessment has been extended by about an hour and therefore our delayed start procedure is not a viable option. After considering multiple solutions, we have decided this is the best option for our students. State testing accountability for future years is still undetermined, but it is unlikely this calendar change will be necessary in the future. We will keep you informed when we have more information.

The purpose of this notice is to give you as much advance notice as possible so that you can plan ahead for these days. More detailed information will be communicated at a later date. Please contact Mr. Hauser or Mr. Henseleit in the office of Academic Accountability with any questions. Thank you!.

ICS Theatre Department presents “A Doll’s House,” a Modern Classic The ICS Theatre Department will present A Doll’s House, February 7th 8th (7 pm) and 9th (2:30 pm) at Herron High School’s black-box theater on the 2nd floor in Russell Hall.

Featuring a talented cast and crew from both Herron and Riverside High School under the direction of Mary Lou Szczesiul and technical artistry/guidance of Matthew Cunningham and Arden Tiede, the 1879 classic reveals the story of the awakening of a young woman who ultimately leaves her marriage, children and home to ‘find herself’ while still trying to find the words for something that she knows is terribly wrong.

The iconic play by Henrik Ibsen (aka the “father of modern theater realism”), is considered significant for the way it explores the fate of women, who at the time lacked reasonable opportunities for fulfillment in a male-dominated world. While playwright Ibsen insisted he must, “disclaim the honor of having worked for the women’s rights’ movement … not wishing to make propaganda,” he defined his task to be even more monumental -- “a description of humanity.” The play remains a modern classic.

Tickets are $5.00 for all ICS students, faculty and staff, $5.00 for all other students ages 8 to 18, and $10.00 for adults. Tickets are available at the door one hour prior to each performance.

Performance Dates and Times:

Friday, February 7th @ 7pm Saturday, February 8th @ 7pm Sunday, February 9th @ 2:30pm

Location: Herron High School, 110 East 16th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202 (2nd floor, Russell Hall)

The Indianapolis Classical Schools Fund

It takes many resources to establish & sustain the excellence that Herron High School and Riverside

High School have attained. However, ICS faces the ongoing challenge of achieving this with fewer

resources than other public schools receive.

As public charter schools, we only get a portion of the funds that it takes to provide a world-class

education - with an incredible faculty, dedicated one-on-one attention for every student, enrichment

opportunities like field trips, extracurricular clubs & athletics, and global travel opportunities… and it’s

not enough.

This year, we must raise more than $400,000 to meet our operating gap and we need your help! We

ask you to give generously as you are able with a gift to The Indianapolis Classical Schools Fund.

We established The Indianapolis Classical Schools Fund as our annual fundraising initiative to meet

this need. 100% of every gift you make will directly benefit the scholars of Herron High School &

Riverside High School.

Your gift will help to provide the financial support needed to attract and retain the best teachers, finances maintenance and upkeep on our historical campuses, and allows us to offer our award-winning classical, liberal arts curriculum. In the past, these funds have helped to purchase team uniforms and classroom furniture, provide for transportation to events such as the Indiana Ethics Bowl competition, pay the royalties for the school musical, or purchase bus passes for scholars who need them. The fund also supports our emergency fund, which has assisted scholars and their families with utility bills, groceries and housing in times of crisis.
