Riverside Language Program
ESOL Instructor Job Description
For almost 40 years, the Riverside Language Program (RLP) has been a provider of free, intensive English language, civics and IT classes to newly arrived and documented immigrants, refugees, and asylees in New York City. Through its innovative and immersive program, RLP supports new immigrants’ integration by dramatically improving their English language skills. As a result, the program increases participants’ job opportunities, earning power, and facilitates their social and civic participation. Position RLP seeks a full-time ESOL instructor to join our team of outstanding language educators passionate about supporting immigrants and refugees to build rapid language skills in order to secure employment or education. The instructor will be expected to plan and deliver student-centered instruction, monitor and assess student progress, and create a motivating, dynamic learning environment. The teaching schedule is from 9-3pm, from Monday to Friday inclusive, with additional time required for meetings and preparation Qualifications:
• A minimum of a Master’s degree in TESOL • At least 8 years of teaching experience • Ability to develop and implement a curriculum based on Silent Way and Counseling
Learning approaches to second language instruction Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Integrating civics instruction into the curriculum • Integrating technology into the class curriculum and providing support for students
using online resources, including the laptops in our IT suite and students’ smart phones • Conducting Best Plus 2.0 testing at the beginning and end of each 32-day class cycle, and
in collaboration with RLP colleagues, determining the appropriate class level for each student
• Maintaining detailed attendance and progress reports • Liaising with RLP’s counselor to ensure that the needs of individuals outside the
classroom are met
In addition, the successful candidate will have: • Outstanding personal and interpersonal communication skills • Excellent organizational skills • The ability to keep concise records • A sensitivity to the development stages and well-being of newly arrived immigrants and
refugees • The ability to facilitate group discussion, analyze situations, and draw conclusions
• The ability to work with a diversity of individuals • Excellent problem solving skills to analyze issues and create action plans
