Fr. Bill’s Weekly ReflectionBy Fr Bill and Dcn Derick

We hear some shocking words in this Sunday’s Gos-

pel: “If anyone comes to me without hating his father

and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters,

and even his own life, cannot be my disciple.” Wow!

Isn’t this the same Jesus who told his followers that

the greatest of all commandments was to love God and

love your neighbor as yourself? Some explanation is

in order to make sense of this passage. The Gospels

were originally written in ancient Greek, and some-

times meanings are taken out of context and get lost in

translation.

The people Jesus was speaking to, lived in a culture

where the family and family honor was paramount and

took precedent over everything. In fact, a father had

the legal right to have any member of his family

stoned to death if they were disobedient! If you placed

anything before your family, it would be considered

the same thing as hating them.

And that is simply what Jesus is saying. Your love

of God and trust in Him will ultimately sustain you

when all else fails – even if your family fails you.

Spouses will divorce, parents and children can become

estranged from each other, and adult siblings may be

divided over certain things and never speak to each

other again.

When people lose everything they hold dear in life

though, God’s love for them still remains. God’s love

for you will never fail. That is why Jesus says that

God’s love should be primary, even above family rela-

tionships which are fallible.

Jesus goes on to say we must pick up our cross and

follow him to be his disciple. Your cross is any suf-

fering or hardships you experience in this life; to fol-

low Jesus as you bear your sufferings (your cross) is

trusting that Jesus will get you through it. We find this

message elsewhere when Jesus says, “ Come to me all

who are weary, for my yoke is easy and my burden is

light.”

For a Spiritual Exercise this week, reflect upon what

the crosses are in your life. Ask God for the Grace

and strength to bear your cross. Then pick up your

cross, and follow Him.

May God Bless You Always,

Fr Bill

Children’s Liturgy

We will again be offering Children's Liturgy starting

Sept 8th at the 10:00 a.m. mass at St. Mary's. After

talking with Fr. Bill, the children will be invited to go

to one of the classrooms in the Education Center to

listen to the gospel story which will be taught at their

level. Parents are always welcome to accompany their

children!

LABOR DAY 2019 – A HUGE SUCCESS!!!!

Thanks to all of our St. Mary’s and Cluster parish-

ioners – both adult and youth, friends and family - for

all of your help in making this Labor Day the best thus

far! Although final numbers will not be realized until

expenses are in, we can share these two facts: We

served 900 guests and…..our Live Auction brought in

over $25,000!!!!! Wow!

Special thanks to Jerry and Marge Sweeting (great

food), Dwight and Junell Duwa (great auctioneering),

and Ron and Theresa Sexton (tents) for their never-

ending contributions to make our day great! There are

many others to mention and space is short. Just know

that you are all AWESOME!!! - Dee Simon
