MAY THE 4TH BE WITH YOU Star Wars Day May 4th, 2020
Believe it or not, the fact that ‘May Fourth' sounds similar to ‘May the force' is the sole reason why fans of the Star Wars franchise decided that May 4 will be celebrated as Star Wars Day, wishing each other by saying “May the Fourth be with you,” instead of “May the Force be with you,” like in the movies. The phrase was first used in an article published in The London Evening News back in 1979 and the date was, you guessed it, May 4. This was the day when Margaret Thatcher first took office as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. It was supposed to be a congratulatory advertisement by her political party and it read, “May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations.”
It is a day dedicated to the celebration of the Star Wars franchise created by George Lucas in 1977. Back in 2011, the first large organized event took place in Toronto Underground Cinema where fans gathered to play games, show off their costumes, watch screenings of the films, and more. The Walt Disney Company purchased Lucas film – the production company responsible for the franchise – in 2012 and has been organizing annual events and celebrations on May 4 every year since.
Star Wars Day was started just by its fans and had nothing to do with either of the companies responsible for the franchise. While May 4 is associated with the Jedi phrase – May the force be with you, May 5 has come to be known as “Revenge of the Fifth” which is a play on Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. May 5 celebrates that Dark Side or the Sith lords in the Star Wars Universe. In 2012, Boris Johnson's acceptance speech ended with the popular phrase ‘May the force be with you'. The order in which the films were released is not the actual chronology of the story line and you can find the correct order, along with other details about the Star Wars universe here.

What a Day 4
1. It was originally called Decoration Day
To honor the deceased, soldiers would decorate graves of their fallen comrades with flowers, flags and wreaths. Hence Decoration Day. Although Memorial Day became its official title in the 1880s, the holiday wouldn’t legally become Memorial Day until 1967.
2. It wasn’t always celebrated the last Monday of May
After the Civil War, General John A. Logan, commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, called for a holiday commemorating fallen soldiers to be observed every May 30. But due to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which took effect in 1971, Memorial Day was moved to the last Monday of May to ensure long weekends.
3. It’s legally required to observe a National Moment of Remembrance
In December 2000, Congress passed a law requiring Americans to pause at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day to remember and honor the fallen.
4. James A. Garfield delivered a rather lengthy speech the first Memorial Day ceremony
On May 30, 1868, he addressed the several thousand people gathered at Arlington National Cemetery. “If silence is ever golden,” Garfield said, “it must be beside the graves of 15,000 men, whose lives were more significant than speech, and whose death was a poem the music of which can never be sung.”
5. Several states observe Confederate Memorial Day
In addition to the national holiday, nine states officially set aside a day to honor those who died fighting for the Confederacy in the Civil War: Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Virginia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Georgia
6. Waterloo, New York is considered the birthplace of Memorial Day
In 1966 Congress unanimously passed a resolution to officially recognize Waterloo as the birthplace of Memorial Day.
7. More than 36 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home this Memorial Day
At least, according to AAA estimates that’s the highest total since the recession.

1. In Greek mythology spring festivals were held in honor of the maternal goddess called, Rhea. She was the wife of Cronus and was believed to be the mother of many deities.
2. Anna Jarvis was also a woman that may have been behind our traditional Mother’s Day celebration on the second Sunday of May. Anna never had any children, but wanted to carry out her own mother’s wishes of having a day just for moms. Anna tirelessly campaigned and on May 8th, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating the
second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
3. Mother’s Day sees around one quarter of all flowers purchased throughout the year falling on this holiday.
4. Carnations are very popular flowers for Mother’s Day and are thought to be made from the tears of Jesus’ mother (Mary) when she wept at his feet the day He was crucified
5. Studies and research now show that giving a bouquet of flowers has many positive health and psychological benefits.
6. What are you getting your
mother this Mother’s Day?
Common gifts include: cards, flowers, meals in restaurants, jewelry, gift cards, clothing, trips to a spa, books, CDs, housewares and even gardening tools.
7. In the vast majority of the world’s
languages, the word for “mother” begins with the letter M.
8. In the United States alone, around 122 million phone calls are made to moms on Mother’s Day.
9. Pink and red carnations are given to mother’s that are still alive, while white ones are for those that have passed away.
