Welcome - Past & Present

Welcome - Past & Present

Archaeological evidence reveals human habitation of the Beartooth region dating back roughly 11,000

years. The Absaloka (Crow) people, though generally thought of as aboriginal inhabitants of the area, arrived relatively recently – moving west to escape their enemies the Sioux, who had chased them out of present-day Minnesota and then from the Black Hills. Legend has it that the name Red Lodge stems from red clay either being purposely applied to Crow

tipis or adhering to tipis as they were pulled on travois behind horses. Another version has the name coming from the red-painted tipi of a Crow leader named Red Bear, whose camp on Rock Creek was attacked by a rival tribe while the men were out hunting, leading to a reprisal raid that has become part of tribal lore.

Improbably, the first European to see the Carbon County area may have been the Spaniard Cabezo de Vaca, who in 1535

led an expedition out of Mexico into what is now northern Montana. Two hundred years later, trappers began to explore the area. Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery traveled through the Yellowstone River valley in 1806, and the following year one of the Corps’ members, John Colter, explored the Clarks Fork valley east of Red Lodge. Jim Bridger trapped in the area in 1837-38, as commemorated by the local town that bears his name.

Welcome - Past & Present

Indian treaties from 1851 and 1868 included the Red Lodge area in the Crow reservation, but rich coal deposits were discovered here in 1866, leading the government in 1882 to declare the region open to mining and settlement.

In 1886, it is said, there were three Indians to every settler and four men to every woman. The ethnic ratio changed quickly when the Rocky Fork Coal Company opened the area’s first mine the following year. Shipments of coal began in 1889 when the Rocky Fork and Cooke City Railway was completed, and Red Lodge became the shipping point for the vast territory to the south, bringing great prosperity to the town.

During this time, Red Lodge was frequented by Buffalo Bill Cody, who used the railway to supply his Cody enterprises; noted scout and trail blazer Calamity Jane, of whom a Red Lodge friend said, “She has the build of a blacksmith, the vocabulary of a muleskinner and the tender heart of a priest”; and a local character, John “Liver Eatin’” Johnston – whaler, cavalry rider, scout, Indian fighter, and lawman – who moved to Red Lodge about 1894. His cabin is preserved on the south end of town.

Red Lodge was first surveyed in 1888, when the town had four stores, 30 houses and about 150 people. By 1892, when the

town was incorporated, the population reached 1,180. In 1895 Red Lodge was made the seat of newly formed Carbon County, and in 1896 the town numbered twenty saloons among its other establishments. With the growth of coal mining, hundreds of Finnish, Scottish, Irish, Italian, Slavic and Scandinavian miners and their families settled in the area, and by 1906 the town boasted six churches, fourteen fraternal orders, two newspapers,

public schools, two telephone systems, an electric plant, three banks, three hotels,

a population of 4,000 and a monthly payroll of $60,000. Within a few years the population surpassed 6,000 – almost three times the current number.

The town’s prosperity continued to grow until 1924, when the West Side Mine closed, and further hardship befell the area during the Great Depression, which forced more mines to close. To offset economic ills, bootleg liquor, labeled “cough syrup”, was made locally and marketed as far away as Chicago andSan Francisco.

In February 1943 an explosion in the Smith Mine near Bearcreek, the area’s largest remaining mine, killed 74 miners and precipitated the end of coal mining in Carbon County.

The Red Lodge area today remains largely agricultural, while the building of the ski area in 1960 and the region’s continued growth as a travel destination support a substantial tourism industry.

“In 1886, it is said, there were three Indians to every settler and four men to every woman.”

Beartooth All-American Road

A Celebration of a Man and His DreamIt’s pretty safe to say that if a man named J.C.F. “Doc” Siegfriedt had listened to what anybody was telling him in the 1920s – anybody at all – the Beartooth Highway, that 68 mile stretch of winding, cliff-hugging, cloud-skimming road stretching from Red Lodge to Cooke City and the entrance of Yellowstone National Park, simply would not exist. But by all accounts, Doc was a force of nature, and from the time he arrived in Montana, he had his heart set on building a road that would connect the Red Lodge area with the wonderland of Yellowstone.

On June 14, 1936, after seventeen years of planning and hard work, Doc led a caravan of honking cars from Red Lodge up the Beartooth Highway to formally declare the road open for travel.

Dubbed “the most beautiful road in America” by On the Road correspondent Charles Kuralt, the Beartooth Highway climbs to an astounding 10,947 feet above sea level. Since its completion in 1936, the Highway has awed millions of visitors with its astonishing views of one of the most rugged and wild areas in the lower 48 states.

Plan on at least two hours’ driving time to make the trip between Yellowstone and Red Lodge – more if you really want to experience the beauty of the Beartooth All-American Road, Yellowstone’s own Highway to the Sky.

Members of the American Motorcyclist Association have voted the Beartooth Highway as their favorite stretch of roadin the United States.

Historic Red Lodge

Much of the downtown district is on the National Register of Historic Places

The central business district of Red Lodge began to take its present form at the turn of the century, when businessmen and community leaders backed their faith in the continuing development of the town with buildings of stone and brick. These buildings, constructed primarily between the late 1880s and 1915, were intended to make Red Lodge a showcase of civic pride and accomplishment. Most have been restored by their owners and are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, Red Lodge continues its tradition of civic pride with design codes and a new Growth Policy adopted to preserve the town’s atmosphere and architectural integrity. The American Planning Association recognized Red Lodge’s Main Street as one of the 10 Great Streets for 2010.

The Carbon County Historical Society has prepared a brochure enabling visitors to take a 40-minute self-guided walking tour of the downtown area. Maps are available at the Red Lodge Area Chamber of Commerce and the Peaks to Plains Museum.

Boys & Girls Club

Red Lodge has a very active Boys and Girls Club which recently refurbished its building to a state-of-the-art design. The club is in line for a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum Certification. Many of the materials used within either came from recycled sources or from the old club.

The club now boasts a commercial kitchen with a larger space for club members to gather.

The basement is now the Teen Center with a study room, a cyber café, a snack bar, and a small kitchen. The basement will also act as a haven after home games to allow home teams to relax and have a safe place to hang out.

The Red Lodge Boys and Girls Club is located at 24 W 9th Street, Red Lodge. Phone: (406) 446-2582. There is also a Boys and Girls satellite club at Roberts High School.

BikingBiking has taken off in the last few years with a large number of cycling events in and around Red Lodge. Cyclists have opportunities galore to test their mettle by trying the Meeteetse Trail, south of town, or really prove themselves with a ride up the Beartooth Highway, which will reward their efforts with a spectacular view of the mountain range at Vista Point.

Walking and SightseeingYou can go on a walking tour of downtown Red Lodge, taking in the Hi Bug area with its fashionable 19th century homes and also Finn Town from the 1880s. Maps are available at the Carbon County Historical Society and Museum.

There is also a driving tour of Carbon County included with the Walking Tour Map of Red Lodge. The driving tour highlights various points of interest from St. Olaf’s Church built in 1904, west of Roberts, the Joliet Bank in Joliet, built in the early 20th century, to the Montana, Wyoming and Southern RR Depot which operated in the early 1900s in Belfry.http://www.carboncountyhistory.com/

Yellowstone National Park

The World’s First National ParkRoughly 2.1 million years ago, the first in a series of three enormous volcanic eruptions – estimated to be 2400 times more powerful than the Mt. Saint Helens eruptions of 1980 – took place in what is now the northwestern corner of Wyoming. The second eruption occurred about 1.3 million years ago, and the last a relatively recent 650,000 years ago. The resultant collapsed craters, called caldera, contain more than 10,000 geothermal phenomena – the largest concentration on the planet – and approximately 240 cubic miles of the soft rhyolite rock that gave rise to the name we know the area by today: Yellowstone.

Over the millennia, the rich volcanic soils have come to feed and shelter a diverse ecosystem of insects, plants and animals. Established in 1872, the 2.2 million acre Yellowstone National Park preserves this unique region and forms the heart of the ecosystem – the largest intact temperate ecosystem in the world, with all species of the food chain present following the reintroduction of wolves to the park in 1995, and more than 1600 species of plants. Evidence suggests that humans have been visiting the area for 11,000 years.

Many of the park’s natural features are easily visited on short walks from parking areas, though the vast majority of the park is road-less and managed as a designated wilderness area, with special restrictions on use of the backcountry.

While it is possible to drive the Grand Loop through the park in a single day, it is suggested that visitors spend at least three days

touring the park to fully appreciate its many attractions. Those with less time might consider concentrating on one area rather than trying to see everything.

Wildlife Viewing

What animal doesn’t visit the area? The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness gives you a chance to see the wildlife up close and personal. From elk, mountain lions, big horn sheep, mountain goats, to the ubiquitous deer, and of course the stars of the show, the black bear and the grizzly. The Silver Run Elk viewing area also allows for more opportunity to catch a glimpse of wildlife. This is located on West Fork Road. Please remember no wild animal is harmless.

HikingThere are miles and miles of trails to explore in the surrounding area. Red Lodge’s backyard is the fifth largest designated Wilderness Area in the United States, the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area, consisting of 943,377 acres.

For the elevation enthusiast, there are 27 mountain peaks exceeding 12,000

feet and Granite Peak at 12,799 feet is Montana’s highest. However, there are also many gentler trails that are easy to access for a stroll into the wild.

The terrain offers hikers of all ages the chance to come and enjoy the wonders the land has to offer, from mountainous scenery, waterfalls, and abundant lakes to alpine meadows you long thought were just in dreams.

Outlying Areas

You can enjoy much of the area’s scenery from the comfort of your vehicle, including high alpine areas, forest and the austere beauty of the Pryor Mountains.

Beartooth Scenic Highway (U.S. Rte 212)One of the most spectacular drives in the United States, the Beartooth Highway climbs the headwaters of the Rock Creek Basin through several types of forest and

crosses high alpine tundra notable for its rugged, panoramic scenery and an abundance of wildflowers. It then descends to the northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park. An excellent route into the park or a

destination for fishing, hiking or enjoying the high country.

Chief Joseph Scenic Highway (Wyo. Rte 296)After reaching the summit of the Beartooth Scenic Byway 212 and descending into the North Crandall Creek area, you can take a

left turn onto Wyoming Highway 296, the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway, named after the Nez Perce Chief who led his people through the valley in an attempt to escape the U.S. Military. Burn areas from the 1988 Yellowstone National Park forest fires are visible along the drive, which provides views of snow-capped mountain peaks, steams, forests, meadows and wildlife. From the junction of the Chief Joseph Highway and Wyoming Rout 120 you can return to the Red Lodge area or head towards Cooke City and Silver Gate.

Route 78 and East Rosebud LakeMontana Highway 78, which leads out of Red Lodge, provides uninterrupted views of the Beartooth Mountains and, on clear days, of the rugged Crazy Mountains along the Yellowstone Valley to the north. The town of Roscoe is the gateway to the East rosebud Canyon ad East Rosebud Lake. After passing through Roscoe, keep left and cross the bridge over the East Rosebud River. A few yards beyond a right turn takes you on a beautiful if bumpy ride into East Rosebud Canyon and the lake. Carved into the granite of the Beartooth Plateau by East Rosebud Creek, the steep walls of the canyon tower

above East Rosebud Lake to create one of the most beautiful settings in the area. The 1997 Shepherd Mountain Fire burned much of the old lodge pole pine forest, clearing the way for thousands of new aspen seedlings and wildflowers now blanketing the slopes.

Pryor Mountains, Dryhead OverlookAt the elevation of more than 8,500 feet, the Dryland Overlook atop East Pryor Mountain rewards more adventurous travelers with a panoramic view of the Bighorn Canyon, Bighorn Mountains and the arid plains of Wyoming. The best route to this austere and isolated mountain vista crosses the Crow Indian Reservation and climbs through wildlife rich forests to alpine meadows. Off the beaten path, but well worth the efforts to get there. Check with the Forest Service for directions and road conditions.

LutherThe small town of Luther is on Highway 78 between Red Lodge and Roscoe. If you should turn off here you will be rewarded with hillsides of cattle and horses as well as some scenes of the town’s old main street and school. There are no services in Luther.

Camping Out Montana Style

Red Lodge boasts an array of campgrounds. These include a KOA, Perry’s and a number of public

land areas. Amenties include fresh water, electricity, RV pumping stations and showers.

For those wanting to camp farther afield, there are more than 700 camping units ranging in facilities on National Forest land.

In the National Forest most campsites are equipped with tables, tent pads, fire rings and parking spurs. Eleven camping areas in the Beartooth District charge a minimum camping fee and provide garbage disposal and water.

The others offer free camping, but you must supply your own toilet paper and water, and pack out all your trash. There are also handicap accessible campgrounds and trails.

Forest Service facilities in the immediate Red Lodge area are located along the two Rock Creek branches:

Main ForkSheridan and Rattin Campgrounds are about five miles south of Red Lodge on U.S. Highway 212. They are located on a gravel road and more suited to tents and small campers.

Farther south along Highway 212 are Parkside, Limberpine and Greenough Campgrounds; all are within a mile of each other. They are accessed on paved roads and have hand pumps for drinking water. Campsites include tables, fire pits and parking spurs.

Another two miles south of this complex is M-K Campground, originally a field camp during the construction of the Beartooth highway. Both picnic and camping sites are available here. This is a ‘reduced services’ site: you must pack out your trash and provide your own water.

Seven other Forest Service campgrounds are located along the Beartooth All-American Road between the Parkside

complex and Cooke City, 60 miles from Red Lodge. All are well equipped and offer beautiful high-country surroundings.

West ForkAll campgrounds in the West Fork drainage offer picnic tables, fire pits, toilets and a place to pitch a tent or park a camper.

About two miles west of Red Lodge on the West Fork Road is Palisades Campground. This site is quite rustic but has picnic tables. Six sites for tents only and toilets. You will have to bring your own water and pack out your trash.

Another three miles up the West Fork Road is Cascade Campground, with another 30 camping sites, hand pumped drinking water and a dumpster.

About eight miles from Red Lodge is Basin Campground with 30 sites and the trailhead to Basin Lake. A hand pump provides water and there are dumpsters for trash.

Mountain Metamorphosis

The development of the Beartooth MountainsA number of different theories attempt to explain the formation of the Beartooth Mountains, but geologists generally agree that the range resulted from the uplifting of a giant block of Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks which were subsequently broken by fault lines, overlaid with lava on the southwest corner, and carved by glaciers and streams. The Beartooths contain some of the oldest rocks on the planet – dated by radiogenic methods at 2.5 to 3 billion years old. A comparison of the Beartooth block and a similar layer of Precambrian rock under the Big Horn Basin to the south reveals that the Beartooths were uplifted more than 25,000 feet over the course of seventy million years. The range now consists largely of broad plateaus averaging about 10,000 feet in height – making it the highest continuous region in the U.S. – and crowned by Granite Peak, Montana’s highest mountain at 12,799 feet. The blade-like limestone palisades that stretch along the Beartooth Front, and the striking Beartooth Butte about halfway between Red Lodge and Yellowstone National Park on the Beartooth Highway, are remnants of the sedimentary rock layers originally deposited on top of the Precambrian rocks by an ancient sea. The rest were scoured from the range by successive periods of glaciation.

Geologic change continues in the area. The Yellowstone area is volcanically active and the “hot spot” of deeply buried molten rock that creates its

geothermal phenomena is drifting slowly to the northeast. A major eruption could occur within the next 100,000 years. Until that time, the erosional forces, or wind, water and ice, will continue to shape the mountains and valleys of the Beartooth Range.

About Your Chamber

The Red Lodge Area Chamber of Commerce, organized in the 1930s, serves a region radiating from Red Lodge for about one hundred miles. Tourism,

agriculture, recreation and real estate development form the dominant business base with growth being experienced in ecofriendly small industries, technology services and general business.

Situated in south-central Montana at the northern terminus of the famed Beartooth Highway, Red Lodge thrives as an active community and county seat enjoying four seasons. In addition to the All-American Road connection which links Red Lodge to Cooke City and the northeastern entrance to Yellowstone National Park, other scenic roadways circulate visitors throughout this diverse area.

Several smaller towns, including Absarokee (pronounced Ab-zoar-kee), Roberts, Joliet (pronounced Jolly-et), Belfry and Bridger—as well as the hamlets of Nye, Dean, Fishtail, Roscoe, Silesia (pronounced Sa-lisha), Rockvale and Edgar—lie within easy reach. Because of the intensity of the tourist activity, businesses from more distant towns such as Columbus, Laurel and Billings find it valuable to participate in our Chamber. Farming members from as far away as Ryegate bring fresh produce to sell in the summer.

Committed to preserving the assets and values of its unique home base, the Red Lodge Area Chamber of Commerce supports the preservation of both the physical and cultural landscape andseeks to expand business through sound ecological and sustainable practices.
