Greek language from the word Adamas, which translates “unconquerable and indestructible.” The Greeks believed them to be splinters of stars that had fallen to Earth and believed diamonds promoted strength, invincibility, and courage to those who wore them.

They are formed at high temperatures under intense pressure 87 to 120 miles (140 to 190 km) within the Earth’s mantle over billions of years. Although there are synthetic “diamonds,” there is no man-made way to reproduce the tremendous heat and pressure found deep within the Earth that creates diamonds. Millionaire publisher Malcolm Forbes had this to say about diamonds – “Diamonds are nothing more than chunks of coal that stuck to their jobs.”

Making sure Rover isn’t a driving distraction

(NC)—Most people don’t think twice about grabbing their pet to take a ride in the car, to run some errands or to visit friends and family. However, with an increased focus on distracted driving and overall driving safety, there is growing concern about pet safety in the car.

“Many people overlook the potential distraction that a pet can be, especially if they are loose in your vehicle,” saysAchiel Goossens, the senior manager of auto claims with Aviva Canada. “They can distract you from the road, impair your vision, and even attempt to climb on you while driving. This is why pet safety in cars is so important. Properly securing your pet will ensure both you and your pet are safe.”

There are a number tips that drivers can follow to ensure their pet is safe and secure when they go for a ride in the car. They include:

• Don’t let your pets run loose in the car.

• Don’t let your dog hang its head outside the window.

• Secure your pets using a pet friendly seat belt or safety harness.

• Small pets should be crated at all times.

• Avoid letting your pets sit on your lap when driving.

• Never leave your animal in the car unattended, especially in the summer months.

• Consider installing a dog barrier in your vehicle if you have a hatchback, van or SUV.

the next hardest mineral on Earth, they are quite brittle and can be shattered by the single blow of a hammer. And if a diamond is placed in an oven at a temperature of 1405° F (763° C), it will disappear without leaving so much as an ash behind.

• About 250 tons of earth must be mined toproduce a single one-carat diamond. Over 130,000,000 carats weighing 57,000 lbs. (26,000 kg) of diamonds are mined every year – a value of about $9 billion.

•OfallthediamondstobefoundonEarth,only20% of them are suitable for jewelry. The majority of diamonds are used for industrial drilling, grinding, cutting, and polishing tools. Diamonds are embedded into drill bits for drilling oil and gas wells through thousands of feet of rock.

•DiamondswerefirstdiscoveredinIndia,butmost diamond deposits are found in Africa and Russia.TherearesignificantdepositsinBrazil,Australia, and Canada, and in a few U.S. states, Arkansas, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. There’s only one mine in the world where you can be a miner, located at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas, a 37.5-acre ancient volcanic crater. For $7, you can mine all day

andkeepanythingyoufind.In1990,oneluckypark visitor found a diamond weighing 3.03 carats in the rough. After cutting, the gem was a perfect 1.09 carat. Don’t get your hopes up, however – gemologists estimate this was a one in a billion occurrence.

•Althoughlessthan1%ofdiamondsareminedin the U.S., America buys more than half of the world’s total production of quality gems.

•A diamond’s value is based on the “FourC’s” – carat weight, clarity, color, and cut. A diamond’s carat is not the same as that of gold. Pure gold is considered 24 carats, while onediamondcarat is0.007055oz.(200mg).Not all diamonds are clear. The presence of impurities causes the gems to vary in color, as can heat or irradiation. Nitrogen in a stone produces a yellow color, while irradiation mightproducegreen.Blue,red,brown,pink,orange, and even black might result from the presence of both irradiation and heat. Clear diamonds are the highest grade and value.

• Diamonds lose about 50% of their originalweight during the cutting and polishing process, changing a rough stone into a faceted gem. One diamond weighing two carats is worth double that of two one-carat diamonds. About 75% of all diamonds sold worldwide are round cut. Other popular cuts include the football-shaped marquise, the pear cut (which are rounded on one end with a tapering point on the other), and the emerald cut, a rectangular shape with cropped corners.

•Althoughblue,green,andpinkdiamondsareextremely rare, they are not the rarest gems. That honor belongs to the pure red ruby. Diamonds themselves aren’t actually rare at all, with thousands mined every year.

Q: Our 10-year-old Shih Tzu recently started snoring, and now it’s getting worse. She snores just about every time she sleeps. If I we wake her when she begins snoring, she just starts up again. Is there something wrong? We’re not getting any sleep!

A: If you haven’t already done so, see your veterinarian to rule out an obstruction in the dog’s throat, such as a growth, or even a toy. “Maybe the problem has worsened as your dog has gained weight,” says Dr. Mark Russak, of Berlin, CT, president-elect of the American Animal Hospital Association. “Just as weight gain may be associated with snoring in people, the same is true for dogs. Snoring is also more common in dogs, such as Pugs, with short snouts.” “If your dog is overweight, the snoring will likely decline as your dog takes off the pounds. Your veterinarian can advise you on a weight-loss strategy,” says Russak. “Otherwise, consider moving your dog out of the bedroom so you can sleep. But I understand that is not likely advice you’ll consider. After all, my wife would more likely move me out of the bedroom before she moves the dog. Have you tried ear plugs?”

Roi was a stray boy who was living on a rooftop. A kind person brought him into Katie’s Place as that is no way for an animal to live. He adapted to the shelter life right away and enjoys human attention, although we have noticed that he prefers female visitors to male visitors. Roi is a beautiful boy but his sad eyes tell us that he must have had a hard time living on the streets. He is very gentle and easy going and seems to get along well with the other cats in the pen. He would probably do well in a home with another cat and even a small, mellow dog companion. Roi really loves cuddles and being brushed and this tells us that at some point in his life he must have been someone’s beloved pet. Roi needs a loving

home where he can once again be loved and cared for. Come meet Roi and see if he’s the companion for you. Purrsia is a beautiful girl, on the outside and on the inside. She really is a lovely, sweet girl and we are

shocked that she has not been adopted yet. We think the problem may be that cute little Purrsia tends to be a bit shy during the busy Open House hours when potential adopters come to visit. Because of this few get to see the her beautiful face and sparkling personality. Once the shelter quiets down Purrsia re-appears and shows her affection by rolling around and reaching out for pets. She’s so wiggly it is hard for us to get a good picture of her. She came to the shelter because her family could no longer provide a stable home life. Her previous owners told us that she loves to play and lived amicably with two dogs. She loves to be brushed. She loves to be near you but not on you, and she loves to talk. If you want a well adjusted, beautiful girl who will fill your days with love come meet Purrsia.
