RMF South Sudan Receives Donation of Essential Drugs and Medical Supplies from Direct Relief

Receipt of Essential Drugs and Medical Supplies from Direct Relief In spite of the difficulties caused by ongoing armed conflict, food insecurity, and high inflation, RMF South Sudan’s team continues to provide high-quality healthcare services and support to the people of South Sudan. On April 4th, 2017, RMF South Sudan was encouraged to receive assorted medical supplies and drugs donated by Direct Relief International to support our humanitarian interventions. The total value of the donation is approximately US$ 1,258.61. The drugs were received and cleared through Freight Clearing Agent, because the requirements (the certificate of tax exemption) were missing and the clearance and process would take more than 1–2 months. RMF obtained a certificate from the Food and Drug Authority, Republic of South Sudan. The assorted drugs and supplements will be donated to Juba Teaching Hospital (run by the South Sudan Ministry of Health and supported by RMF) and the Gorwai and Pibor primary health care centers (RMF-supported facilities). Please see the distribution lists attached with this report. It is hoped that the donated drugs and supplements will help minimize the lack of essential drugs in these facilities. The list of medical supplies and vitamin supplements, as well as their shelf life, was reviewed for accuracy and compared with the actual delivery. All was found to be correct.

Further review of the drugs, especially gentamicin and ciprofloxacin, indicated that it will be a challenge for the health workers to administer these, as they require an infusion set which is entirely different from the current equipment used at the hospital.

Planned Distribution of Essential Drugs and Medical Supplies from Direct Relief The entire amount of fluconazole infusion, sterile water for irrigation, and dextrose will be donated to Juba Teaching Hospital, as these supplies have a shorter shelf life. RMF’s health team in Juba will be engaging the director and pharmacist of Juba Teaching Hospital next week (immediately after the Easter holiday) for the donation of these and other supplies that we received from Direct Relief. In order to reinforce support for primary and tertiary health care in South Sudan, specifically through Juba Teaching Hospital and the two RMF-supported health facilities in rural settings, there is need to obtain a needs-based list of drugs from the beneficiary hospital and health facilities. Their list will be verified against the common essential drugs in the country. On behalf of RMF South Sudan’s health team, our team leader, and all of Real Medicine Foundation, we thank Direct Relief International for the generous gesture and the invaluable donation, especially at this time, when the national health system is in dire need of supplies and equipment and crippled by the increasing number of outbreaks, poor nutrition, and poverty aggravated by the ongoing internal conflict. It is anticipated, and noted with joy, that there will be a significant increase in similar donations to strengthen the health system of South Sudan with robust pharmaceutical supplies and equipment. Our South Sudan team believes this will continue with the great leadership of Dr. Martina and Dr. Taban through the coming years.
