RMSBANDPROGRAMPURPOSEANDSTRUCTUREStudentsbeginbandinthesixthgrade,beingmatchedinthespringoftheir5thgradeyearwiththeirinstrumentofchoiceandthendiving,alongwiththeirclassmates,intoawholenewrealmofmusicalconcepts!Seventhandeighthgradersaredividedintointermediateandadvancedbands,eachprogressingatanappropriatelevelofcomplexity.SeventhandeighthgradersalsoparticipateintheRMSFootballPepBandandhavetheopportunitytojointheRMSJazzBand.

GRADINGPOLICY

Gradinginbandclassismostlybasedondailyparticipation.Thisincludescomingtoclasswithinstrument,music,takingfullpartintheday’sactivities,andfollowingallclassroomrules.Gradingisalsopartiallybasedonmeetingindividualplayingstandards.Iobservethis(andgradeaccordingly)bylisteningtothemplay“pass-offs”(seebelow).

THEPANTHERPASS-OFFREWARDCLUB

ThePantherPass-OffRewardClubisanincentivemethodIusetobothmotivatestudentsandchecktheirindividualprogress.Atthebeginningoftheyear,eachstudentisissuedarewardclubcard(muchlikeyoumightreceiveatastoreorrestaurant),containing10boxes.Whenastudentsuccessfullyplaysamusicalexerciseforme,Icheckoffabox.Tencheckedboxesequalsaprizeandanewcard.Forgradingpurposes,studentsarerequiredtoplayatleastfiveexercisesper9weeks.ALABAMABANDMASTERSDISTRICT2HONORBAND,MUSICPERFORMANCE

ASSESSMENT,SOLO&ENSEMBLEANDTHEALABAMAALL-STATEBAND

TheAlabamaBandmastersAssociationprovidesaseriesofopportunitiesforstudentstoexcelbothindividuallyandinsmallandlargegroupsettings.ThehighesthonorforanindividualbandstudentistobeacceptedtotheDistrictHonorBandandtheAll-StateBand.AuditionsforthishappeninJanuary,andMrs.Probstwillassistinpreparation.Thisyear’sRMSSymphonicBandwillparticipateinandbeevaluatedatthelarge-grouplevel,calledMusicPerformanceAssessment,inlateFebruary.Theninthespring,individualsorsmallgroupsmayattendSoloandEnsemble,toperformbeforeandreceivefeedbackfromqualifiedjudges.

PRIVATELESSONS

RMSBandStudentsareencouragedtoseekprivateinstructionstosupplementwhattheylearninbandclass.AfewmusicstudentsfromJacksonvilleStateUniversitywillbeavailabletoteach½hourlessonsatRMSduringandafterschool(schedulestocomelater).Thecostis$100persemester,foreightlessons.PleasefilloutthePrivateLessonSign-upFormifyouareinterested.

MEDICATIONPROCEDURES

IncompliancewiththeAlabamaStateDepartmentofEducation,wecannotissueanymedicationtoanystudentunlesstheparenthascompletedthemedicalreleaseformsandprovidesunopenedbottlesofthemedicineneeded.Prescriptionsmustbeaccompaniedbyadoctorissuednote.Serioushealthissuesmayrequiretheparenttoaccompanythechildonbandevents.Medicalreleaseformsareincludedinthebackofthehandbook.
