RNA transcription occurs within the cells of all living organisms.

The messenger RNA (mRNA) must first travel into the nucleus of the cell.

Once the mRNA is inside of the nucleus it searches within a certain chromosome.

Furthermore, it searches for a specific gene within that chromosome.

It is in this gene that the mRNA will copy the required information to make a protein.

= Thymine = Guanine = Adenine = Cytosine

Page 7: RNA Transcription

First, an enzyme ‘unzips’ the DNA by breaking the hydrogen bonds, which are connecting the

nitrogen bases. This allows the mRNA to enter. CLICK HERE

Next, the mRNA nucleotides temporarily match up with the appropriate DNA nucleotides from

only one side of the DNA. CLICK HERE

Note that mRNA does not contain T (thymine), instead U (uracil) is paired with A (adenine). This enables the mRNA to leave the cell nucleus. Because DNA always contains thymine it can never leave the nucleus of a cell.

After copying the required information the mRNA carries this information to the ribosome, where it

will be turned into a protein. CLICK HERE

After the mRNA exits the DNA, the hydrogen bonds of the gene ‘zip’ back together. The DNA

is not changed AT ALL during transcription.CLICK HERE
