Background

Why did the Unisa Library change from AACR2 to RDA? 1. All libraries started with RDA authority records in April 2013 because of an OCLC ruling

Background, continued

2. Libraries in the United States and elsewhere therefore changed over to generate not only RDA authority records, but also RDA bibliographic records.

Background, continued

3. The Unisa Cataloguing Division downloaded those record in the Library Catalogue. 4.The cataloguers needed to be trained to quality assured those records and to be able to also generate RDA records

RDA Implementation plan

The cataloguing Division had to develop the RDA implementation plan very carefully. 1. Decided on the date of

implementation. 2. Developed a training plan (that included make-up sessions for those that missed the training).

RDA Implementation plan, continued

3. Developed a RDA orientation plan for the different directorates with dates that suite the various directorates. 4. Develop a core and a core if bibliographic record.

RDA Implementation plan, continued

5. Explained the RDA Toolkit. 6. Created a checklist for the different options and alternatives in RDA to decide on what will work for us. 7. Updated the Cataloguing directive. .

RDA Implementation plan, continued

8. Updated the quality assurance tables. 9. Prepared a graduation certificate. 10. Organized a graduation ceremony.

RDA Training plan

The RDA training plan included the following: 1. Give an overview of FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) 2. Explain the new RDA terminology 3. Sketch background and structure of RDA.

RDA Training plan, continued

4. Identify and list all new MARC21 tags. 5. Explain differences between AACR2 and RDA. 6. Identify manifestations and items. 7. Identify works and expressions. 8. Explain the RDA rules around persons, families and corporate bodies.

RDA Training plan, continued

9. Explain RDA relationships. 10. Explain the use of the RDA Toolkit 11. Discuss the core and core if bibliographic records. 12. Work through the copy cataloguing workflow.

1. Help catalogue users to find the information they need more easily 2. Flexible framework for content description of digital resources that also serves the needs of libraries organizing traditional resources
