(AP) SAN FRANCISCO, May 26, (AP): Microsoft really, REALLY wants you to upgrade to Windows 10. Since last summer, the tech giant has pushed and prodded PC owners to upgrade their machines to its latest Windows version. While the upgrade is currently free for most consumers with Windows PCs, critics say the company’s heavy-handed nudg- ing amounts to an “offer you can’t refuse.” Microsoft initially offered Win- dows 10 as an optional upgrade — that is, one that users had to choose themselves. Then, earlier this year, the company reclassified it as a “rec- ommended” update. Some Windows 10 holdouts cried foul, since many PCs are set up to automatically install recommended updates, which are usually important security fixes. Sud- denly those machines would automat- ically install Windows 10 as well. At one point, some PC owners complained, Microsoft began sending on-screen messages prompting them to download and install Windows 10. The catch: Where most such pop-up windows have buttons marked “OK” and “Cancel,” this message displayed two buttons that both led to an up- grade (“Upgrade Now” and “Upgrade Tonight”). To avoid the upgrade, die- hard resisters had to click a red “X’’ in the upper-right corner that closed the window. Notifications Microsoft then revised the notifica- tions, citing customer feedback. A new version tells PC owners they are scheduled for a “recommended” upgrade to Windows 10 at a specific time in the near future, and bears a prominent “OK” button. To reject or reschedule the change, users have to find and click a less conspicuous link in small type. But clicking the “X’’ no longer blocks the upgrade. Some PC users reacted as though Microsoft had left a horse’s head in their bed. “Deceptive” and “a nasty trick” is how Brad Chacos, an editor at PCWorld, put it in a column after his wife unwittingly clicked the “X’’ and later found her machine was no longer running Windows 7, which she had wanted to keep. “Deploying these dirty tricks only frustrates long-time Windows users who have very valid reasons to stick with operating systems they already know and love,” wrote Chacos, who added that he uses and likes Windows 10 personally. His wife, though, is now shopping for a Mac. Microsoft says it isn’t trying to be sneaky. In blog posts and official statements, the company says it shows users at least two notifications before it activates Windows 10. It also al- lows any PC owner to reverse the installation and go back to their old software if they do so within 31 days. “We understand you care deeply about what happens with your device. This is why - regardless of your upgrade path - you can choose to upgrade or decline the offer,” Micro- soft executive vice president Terry Myerson wrote in a blog post. Even so, Microsoft clearly wants to get as many PCs and other devices running Windows 10 as it possibly can. The company says it wants users to have the latest security features and other improvements. Microsoft also makes more money from Windows 10 features that increase usage of Bing, the company’s ad-supported search engine. And it wants to convince programmers there’s a big audience for software apps that are compatible with Windows 10 on PCs, tablets, smartphones and other gadgets. Microsoft announced earlier this month that 300 million devices are running Windows 10 — a faster adoption rate than either of the two previous Windows versions. Most buyers of new PCs will find Windows 10 already installed. But Microsoft says its offer of a free up- grade for old machines is ending July 29 — and that means more notices and prompts are likely. In this April 29, 2015 file photo, a Dell laptop computer running Windows 10 is on display at the Microsoft Build conference in San Francisco. (AP) Shocking twist Captain America a Hydra member By Jesse J. Holland T wo words no one ever expected Captain America to say? “Hail Hydra.” The new “Captain America: Ste- ve Rogers” comic book hits stands Wednesday featuring the return of the original Captain America, Steve Rogers, but with a shocking twist: in the final pages Rogers throws a fel- low hero out of a plane to his death and says “Hail Hydra,” the salute of the longtime Marvel Comics terrorist group Hydra. The patriotic hero’s apparent heel turn, following months of sitting on the sidelines, is the highlight of the new No. 1 issue written by Nick Spen- cer and drawn by Jesus Saiz, and the book’s editor, Tom Brevoort, wants people to know they aren’t falling back on any of the old comic-book switcheroos — a clone, a life model decoy or a Steve Rogers from another dimension — for this reveal. “That’s the real dude, and you’ll find out the whys and wherefores in the second issue,” Brevoort said. Reflected Captain America has always re- flected the era he’s lived in, and add- ing this level of complexity to Steve Rogers’ character just reflects where we are as a country, Brevoort said. “In the zeitgeist of the moment that we’re in, in the middle of sort of a very volatile election cycle where there’s a lot of strange things going on in the world of politics, and the world and the country, it feels kind of appropri- ate, kind of right timing-wise, that you could get a revelation like this and it not feel out of step with where the nation happens to be in the moment,” he said. Captain America has been the focus of three movies from Marvel Studios: “Captain America: The First Avenger”, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and the current “Cap- tain America: Civil War.” As a comic book character, he’s gone through several changes in the last few years, including Rogers dying in the comic book’s “Civil War” event and being resurrected; and being replaced as by former sidekicks Bucky and the Fal- con as the official Captain America. Conjunction “Captain America: Sam Wilson” will run in conjunction with “Captain America: Steve Rogers,” with stories Brevoort called “two sides” of the same coin. Rogers’ new status also helps explain why Wilson, the first black Captain America, is keeping the identity and the shield. “Twenty-four hours ago people were asking the question of ‘Steve is back. Why do you need Sam Wilson? When is he going to go back to being the Falcon?’” Brevoort laughed. “And suddenly today, 24 hours later, people kind of go, ‘Oh, now I see something that I didn’t see before.’ And now sud- denly there is an interesting friction between these two titles.” Any change in Captain America al- ways brings controversy, and Internet leaks meant hate email from irate fans has already started, he said. “It speaks both to the strong connection that peo- ple have for Steve Rogers as an indi- vidual or even Captain America as an idea,” he said. SAN FRANCISCO, May 26, (AP): Microsoft really, REALLY wants you to upgrade to Windows 10.

Since last summer, the tech giant has pushed and prodded PC owners to upgrade their machines to its latest Windows version. While the upgrade is currently free for most consumers with Windows PCs, critics say the company’s heavy-handed nudg-ing amounts to an “offer you can’t refuse.”

Microsoft initially offered Win-dows 10 as an optional upgrade — that is, one that users had to choose themselves. Then, earlier this year, the company reclassifi ed it as a “rec-ommended” update. Shocking twist

Captain Americaa Hydra member

By Jesse J. Holland

Two words no one ever expected Captain America to say? “Hail

Hydra.”The new “Captain America: Ste-

ve Rogers” comic book hits stands Wednesday featuring the return of the original Captain America, Steve Rogers, but with a shocking twist: in the fi nal pages Rogers throws a fel-low hero out of a plane to his death and says “Hail Hydra,” the salute of the longtime Marvel Comics terrorist group Hydra.

The patriotic hero’s apparent heel turn, following months of sitting on the sidelines, is the highlight of the new No. 1 issue written by Nick Spen-cer and drawn by Jesus Saiz, and the book’s editor, Tom Brevoort, wants people to know they aren’t falling back on any of the old comic-book switcheroos — a clone, a life model decoy or a Steve Rogers from another dimension — for this reveal.

“That’s the real dude, and you’ll fi nd out the whys and wherefores in the second issue,” Brevoort said.

Refl ectedCaptain America has always re-

fl ected the era he’s lived in, and add-ing this level of complexity to Steve Rogers’ character just refl ects where we are as a country, Brevoort said.

“In the zeitgeist of the moment that we’re in, in the middle of sort of a very volatile election cycle where there’s a lot of strange things going on in the world of politics, and the world and the country, it feels kind of appropri-ate, kind of right timing-wise, that you could get a revelation like this and it not feel out of step with where the nation happens to be in the moment,” he said.

Captain America has been the focus of three movies from Marvel Studios: “Captain America: The First Avenger”, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and the current “Cap-tain America: Civil War.” As a comic book character, he’s gone through several changes in the last few years, including Rogers dying in the comic book’s “Civil War” event and being resurrected; and being replaced as by former sidekicks Bucky and the Fal-con as the offi cial Captain America.

Conjunction“Captain America: Sam Wilson”

will run in conjunction with “Captain America: Steve Rogers,” with stories Brevoort called “two sides” of the same coin. Rogers’ new status also helps explain why Wilson, the fi rst black Captain America, is keeping the identity and the shield.

“Twenty-four hours ago people were asking the question of ‘Steve is back. Why do you need Sam Wilson? When is he going to go back to being the Falcon?’” Brevoort laughed. “And suddenly today, 24 hours later, people kind of go, ‘Oh, now I see something that I didn’t see before.’ And now sud-denly there is an interesting friction between these two titles.”

Any change in Captain America al-ways brings controversy, and Internet leaks meant hate email from irate fans has already started, he said. “It speaks both to the strong connection that peo-ple have for Steve Rogers as an indi-vidual or even Captain America as an idea,” he said. (AP)
