Presentation Overview
What will we be looking at?We will investigate areas of Roadway
design that have traditionally been a challenge with GEOPAK Road tools. At Grade Intersections.Ramp exitsGore AreasGore pond design

Why use Site Modeler?
Amalgamates data from different sources into a single environment.GEOPAK SurveyChain and Profile AlignmentsCross SectionsShapesTIN files
Why use Site Modeler?
Speed of Design!Every design change is immediately visually
displayed for the Designer. The design is dynamic and modifiable.
Accuracy.Points are densely and strategically created
which provides the Designer with a more complete design.
Where to start?
We need to import the known Roadway data into Site Modeler.
Existing Surface TIN. Roadway alignments Finished Surface TINs. Specific plan graphics.
Edge of pavement Edge of medians etc…
Data Creation Options
Create a TIN file from Roadway Cross Sections.
GEOPAK provides 2 options to create TIN files directly from the roadway XS’s.
I. XS Reports>DTM InputII. XS Reports>DTM Prop 3D
Data Creation Options
I. XS Reports>DTM Input
Produces a DAT file of the Proposed surface.
Data Creation Options
II. XS Reports>DTM Prop 3D
Produces a DAT file of the combined Proposed and Existing surface.
Data Creation Options
3D Modeling Tools > 3D Cross Sections.
Data Creation Options
3D Modeling Tools > 3D Cross Sections.
Draws the combined existing and proposed surface XS into a 3D DGN file.
These can then be extracted to a DAT file and Triangulated using the DTM tools.
Data Creation Options
Superelevation Tools > Shape to DTM Surface.
Produces a DAT file of the Shape surfaces.
Data Creation Options
Superelevation Tools > Shape to DTM Surface.
Best Option!!!
Data Creation Options
Superelevation Tools > Shape to DTM Surface.
Make Shapes wider than pavement surface.Either create additional shapes (as shown) or
Data Creation Options
Superelevation Tools > Shape to DTM Surface.
Make Shapes wider than pavement surface.Either create additional shapes (as shown) orCreate a new set of shapes with larger offsets.
Data Creation Options
Any of these DAT files can then be either imported directly into Site Modeler…
Project>Import>Data>DAT File
..or triangulated and imported to Site Modeler.
Project>Import>Data>TIN File
How to get the data into Modeler?
Project>Import>Data>TIN Import the Existing and Proposed TINs as Objects.
Element>New/Edit>AlignmentsCreates a Site Element from COGO Chain and Profile.
Element>New/Edit>Drape Create edge of pavement median elements by
draping the MS graphic onto the corresponding TIN Object.
What’s next?
Start Modeling!
After importing the known data, we will set about creating the unknown data.At Grade Intersections.Gore Area Infield pond design
What’s next?
Let’s go to the demo……
The Intersection
Site Modeler highlights a Design problem.
The Profile is 0.4 feet above pavement edge elevation
The Intersection
Site Model showing Intersection with original profile.
The Intersection
Site Model showing Intersection with amended profile.
The Intersection
There was a 0.8 foot difference in the profile elevation at the other
intersecting road!
The IntersectionCompleted!
Ready to cut XS’s, create Plan view stakeout drawing or Export to COGO for survey stakeout.
The Gore AreaSite Modeler has highlighted a Shape problem.
The Pond.
