A fun, efficient, and customizable electric scooter—with an LED text scroller, smartphone connectivity, and music speakers—is one of the inventive designs to come out of the mind of Rob Wolkers. As owner of Rob Wolkers Product Development, the Dutch industrial design engineer consults with companies like eeeeFUN ® , manufacturer of the e-scooter of the same name, to create innovative, award-winning designs. Unlike previous designs, the eeeeFUN scooter lets you configure a model online (www.eeeeFUN. com) and style it to your liking. You can choose the seat, wheels, color, and panel designs from a range of options to produce a green mode of transportation all your own. Developed by Wolkers for eeeeFUN, the scooter design won a prestigious 2012 Red Dot Award, an internationally recognized, juried design competition. With a range of 70 kilometers on a single charge, three power models to choose from, and strong introductory sales, the scooter is on its way to helping eeeeFUN achieve its goal of becoming the worldwide leading brand in electric transportation. Long before the eeeeFUN project, when Wolkers decided to found his industrial design studio, the first order of business was choosing the best design platform to establish, sustain, and grow the business. “At the university, I was taught the AutoCAD ® and Pro/ ENGINEER ® applications,” Wolkers recalls. “Then, I worked as an industrial designer at a couple of companies where I was exposed to SolidWorks ® soſtware. Even though I had experience using a few different packages, the decision to use SolidWorks in my design studio was an easy one to make.” Wolkers chose SolidWorks Professional soſtware because it’s intuitive, easy to use, and supports his industrial design needs. “Most importantly, SolidWorks provided an excellent solid modeler with strong surfacing capabilities,” Wolkers stresses. “I didn’t want two CAD packages: one for modeling and one for surfacing. A fun, effi cient, and customizable electric scooter—with an LED text scroller, smartphone connectivity, and music speakers—is one of the inventive designs to come out of the mind of Rob Wolkers. As owner of Rob Wolkers Product Development, the Dutch industrial design engineer consults with companies like eeeeFUN®, manufacturer of the e-scooter of the same name, to create innovative, award-winning designs.

Unlike previous designs, the eeeeFUN scooter lets you confi gure a model online (www.eeeeFUN.com) and style it to your liking.

Long before the eeeeFUN project, when Wolkers decided to found his industrial design studio, the fi rst order of business was choosing the best design platform to establish, sustain, and grow the business. “At the university, I was taught the AutoCAD® and Pro/ENGINEER® applications,” Wolkers recalls. “Then, I worked as an industrial designer at a couple of companies where I was exposed to SolidWorks® so ware. Wolkers chose SolidWorks Professional so ware because it’s intuitive, easy to use, and supports his industrial design needs. “Most importantly, SolidWorks provided an excellent solid modeler with strong surfacing capabilities,” Wolkers stresses. “I didn’t want two CAD packages: one for modeling and one for surfacing. One system for modeling, surfacing, and renderingThe combination of modeling and surfacing tools in SolidWorks saves Wolkers time, especially when making design changes. “The biggest problem when you use separate surfacing and solid modeling applications is that you eventually have to import surfaces into a CAD package,” Wolkers explains.

“The nature of industrial design is that you always have to make changes to tweak the design,” Wolkers continues. “Adjusting surfaces from other packages to match these changes is time-consuming and prone to error. With SolidWorks, it’s easier and faster to make changes—I estimate from 15 to 20 percent faster—and you don’t have to worry about errors or input problems. SolidWorks saves me a lot of time in the end.”

Once he acquired SolidWorks Professional so ware, Wolkers soon added PhotoView 360 rendering capabilities to his solid modeling and surfacing toolbox. With PhotoView 360 renderings, Wolkers was able to enhance the presentation of design concepts withphotorealistic detail.

Beautiful designs that workWhat sets Rob Wolkers Product Development apart from other industrial design studios is that Wolkers supplies industrial design and engineering services. “My customers want a one-stop shop for the whole design process: from sketching to tooling,” Wolkers notes. “While others focus on concept illustrations, I’m using SolidWorks to design something beautiful that works. I use PhotoView 360 on roughly 90 percent of my projects to provide realistic representations of design concepts. However, behind the image is all of the engineering, dimensioning, and manufacturing data required to make it.

“Many of my competitors can’t take a design as far as I can,” Wolkers adds. “When I need to discuss technical issues with clients, I use eDrawings® to provide in-depth information about the design. Having modeling, surfacing, rendering, design for manufacturability, and technical communications tools in an integrated environment makes SolidWorks really powerful.”

A platform for innovationThe range of tools available in SolidWorks gives Rob Wolkers Product Development a strong platform for innovation. “In most cases, a client will come to me with an idea, and I fl esh it out and create the design,” Wolkers says. “At other times, I collaborate with other designers, as I did on the Flow umbrella—an aerodynamic redesign of an umbrella that cuts through the wind like a leaf on a tree—with Kenneth Veenenbos.

“Whatever the project, SolidWorks is my proven tool for not only transforming ideas into reality but also for creating concepts that are realistic to make,” Wolkers concludes.
