In the dead of night, a group of men - including a police commissioner, a prosecutor, a doctor and a murder suspect - drive through the Anatolian countryside, the serpentine roads and rolling hills lit only by the headlights of their cars. As the night draws on, details about the murder emerge and the investigators' own secrets and hypocrisies come to light. In the Anatolian steppes, nothing is what it seems; and when the body is found, the real questions begin.

When Britain's leading fisheries expert (Ewan McGregor) is approached by a consultant to help realize a sheikh's vision of bringing the sport of fly-fishing to the desert, he immediately thinks the project is both absurd and unachievable. But when the Prime Minister's overzealous press secretary latches on to it as a "good will" story, this unlikely team will put everything on the line and embark on an upstream journey of faith and fish to prove the impossible, possible.

THE SCREENING ON SATURDAY 12 MAY will be introduced by biologist Debbie Parke from the Nith Catchment Fishery Trust (www.river-nith.com) who will talk about the work of the Trust to conserve our native fish species, including a project recreating a salmon river in the Nith catchment!

KIZZYThu 31 May (10.45 & 5.00)David Tilley, UK 1976, 180min

‘Kizzy’ is a BBC production based on the children’s story “The Diddakoi” written by Rumer Godden, who lived in Moniaive, Dumfriesshire from 1978 to 1998. This is the first public screening since its broadcast in 1976. The adaptation tells the moving story of orphaned traveller Kizzy and her trials and tribulations as she fights to be accepted by village gorgios (the gypsy word for those who live ‘in brick’).

As Kizzy’s young teacher says: “Children can be so cruel,” and at its core this is a story of bullying and intolerance. In the course of events Kizzy’s guardian Gran dies and her gypsy caravan home is burnt down. Kizzy then catches pneumonia, is threatened with being put into care, bullied and physically attacked and sees her beloved horse die of old age.

Kizzy’s themes include comments on the care system, tradition versus modernity, middle class snobbery and above all tolerance for - and indeed celebration of - difference and cultural diversity.

There will be a comfort break half way through the screenings.

Rumer Godden’s daughter, Jane Murray-Flutter, will be present at both screenings and happy to answer any questions on an informal basis during the break.
