Why Vote? BECAUSE ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES.

Every 5 years American Jews have the opportunity to vote in the World Zionist Congress and have influence in a way that American Jews rarely have in Israel. While this may seem like a small arcane

election - in fact - critical decisions, influential positions, reputational influence, and funding for Masorti are all at stake in this coming election.

Israelis will watch this election as a bell-weather of where the American electorate stands. It is critical for them to see a strong vibrant vote from the American Conservative movement of Judaism. To take a stand sign up at MERCAZ2020.org

Our work in Israel is important. More and more Israelis are seeking out alternatives to Orthodox Judaism and the Conservative/Masorti Movement offers them an alternative. Conservative/Masorti Judaism has hit important milestones in Israel:

Over 80 kehillot and minyanim across Israel provide religious services, educational programs, lifecycle events, and community service opportunities with over 800 B’nai Mitzvah yearly.

1,000+ egalitarian services yearly at the Masorti Family Kotel with over 100,000 people participating in these services.

Explosive growth of the Conservative Movement Youth Group - NOAM, with more than 700 youth participating in the Ramah Summer Camp program this past summer.

Adraba - The Shirley Lowy Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities is a driving force behind an array of Jewish empowerment and inclusion opportunities. Over 200 children and young people with disabilities have been able to participate in the typical Jewish and social experiences annually and over 5,000 kids to date.

Jewish Pluralism Watch ensures that all Jews are fully recognized, Masorti rabbis are accorded full legal status, and Jews by choice are recognized as fully Jewish and that Masorti congregations receive proportionate and fair funding from the state.

The ultra-Orthodox factions in power have blocked attempts to advance religious freedom at almost every turn. Even more egregious - they have succeeded in blocking the Israeli Government from delivering on major agreements to expand the egalitarian Kotel. This election gives us the opportunity to continue the fight for religious pluralism for all Jews, throughout Israel including - the recognition of Conservative/Masorti Rabbis and recognition of the lifecycle events and conversions they perform; full egalitarian rights of women; and a continuation of the unfettered right of return for all Jews around the world.

B’vrachot, blessings, Rabbi Dennis

With the arrival of January, the subject of New Year’s Resolutions increases in popularity. This is a long-standing concept. The idea of making, and breaking, New Year’s Resolutions has been a social phenomenon for the past 4,000 years.

This practice can be traced back to the ancient Babylonians. They made promises to their gods at the beginning of each year to return objects they borrowed and pay off their debts. They were more likely to keep their resolutions than most modern people are because the people of Mesopotamia believed that a kept promise meant the gods would treat them favorably. However, a broken promise would mean angering the gods and bring unfortunate situations into your life for the next twelve months.

Today, New Year’s Resolutions are generally personal goals for self-improvement. Resolutions from celebrities are often publicized. Note-worthy vows include:

“I will stop trying to put on weight” from the very practical and skinny Jimmy Stewart.

“I will go to class without fail and never miss an actor’s studio session” by the 29 year-old Marilyn Monroe in 1955. She was far more intelligent and serious than the press portrayed.

“Immediately, I will lengthen the year by a single day. If I am successful, I will try again four years from now, and then four years after that. Margaret Leap, the administrative assistant to Julius Caesar said this in 46 BCE. She was so successful in this endeavor that it was made a law and proved to be the basis for the Julian calendar. This rule was named after her: “Leap Year.”

Today, personal finances are often the basis for New Year’s Resolutions, such as:

“I will pay off my credit cards every month in full… with my other credit cards.”

“I will save some money for a rainy day… so that I can shop online instead of having to go to an actual store.”

As we begin our second year as co-presidents, we resolve to continue the dedicated efforts of our predecessors. Please join us at the Erev Shabbat Service and Dinner on Friday, January 3rd at 5:30PM, so that we can compare New Year’s resolutions.

Wishing you a wonderful 2020,

Arnold Miller & Sandy Shapiro Co-Presidents

Debunking Delegitimization

At the December 4th Breakfast Club Rabbi Peter Levi, Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League for Long Beach and Orange County. discussed “BDS” – boycott, divest and sanction, the hateful anti-Israel movement. Attendance was large and Rabbi Levi was a very engaging speaker. There were more incidents of hate and antisemitism than those in attendance had realized from the media. It was important to be informed and to realize the scope and volume of anti-Jewish activity around the area where we all live. The ADL stands for stopping Hate and works with local law enforcement and civic groups on training and education on stopping hate wherever it exists.

There will not be a Breakfast Club meeting in January 2020 as the first Wednesday is a national hoiliday.

Lisa Armony, Director of The Rose Project at The Jewish Federation will speak in February about The Various Zionisms. This should be very educational.

Temple Judea Breakfast Club events begin at 10:00 AM in our social hall. These breakfast gatherings provide a magnificent opportunity to be entertained, mingle with your friends, meet new people, and have a delicious meal. The menu is hearty and includes: handmade lox and cream cheese spread (with lots of lox), eggs, tasty Danish, coffee & tea.

All this is yours for $5. Both women and men are cordially invited to attend. We hope to see you. Feel free to bring a guest or two.

RELIGIOUS COMMITTEE

Have you ever heard of the 10th of Tevet as anything other than just a day in the Hebrew calendar? I never had until I “adopted” two children, a brother and sister, who were killed in the Holocaust and was told their yahrzeit date was the 10th of Tevet. (This “adoption” was part of a project of a funeral home in the Detroit area so that Holocaust victims without family would not be forgotten and would have someone to remember them by saying the Mourner’s Kaddish.) It was then I learned that the 10th of Tevet was designated as a “General Kaddish Day” ( by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel) for victims of the Holocaust for whom there was no identifiable yahrzeit date. Why was the 10th of Tevet chosen as this “General Kaddish Day”? The 10th of Tevet is one of the minor fast days which are observed from before dawn to nightfall. This fast mourns the siege of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylonia on that date in 588 BCE which ultimately culminated with the destruction of Solomon’s Temple (the First Temple) almost 19 months later on the 9th of Av (Tisha B’Av) and the conquest of the Kingdom of Judea. Like Tisha B’Av there were other calamities that occurred throughout Jewish history on the 10th of Tevet and the two days proceeding it. One was that during the 3rd century BCE, a time of Hellenistic rule of Judea during the Second Temple period, Ptolemy, King of Egypt, forced 72 sages to translate the Hebrew Bible into Greek. Although they came up with different versions, they were forced under the threat of death to themselves and their families to come up with a consensus translation. Judaism sees this as a tragedy because only in the original Hebrew could the deeper layers of meaning and mystical ideas be accessed by individuals studying the Torah. The second tragedy around the 10th of Tevet is the death of Ezra, the scribe. There are a few other interesting facts about the 10th of Tevet. It is the only minor fast day that can coincide with a Friday. This is fairly rare occurring last in 2013 but will occur again in December this year. In this case the fast must still be observed until nightfall even though Shabbat begins before sunset, which requires one to enter Shabbat hungry from the fast which is typically avoided. Although this fast is considered a minor fast, like Yom Kippur, it is the only fast that could take place on Shabbat instead of being deferred to the next day. (This cannot happen, however, under the current arrangement of the Hebrew calendar.) One last interesting fact about the 10th of Tevet is that although it is an annual observance, because of the differences between the Hebrew and secular calendars, there is no 10th of Tevet fast in 2019. We will be observing the “2019” fast this month on January 7 and the “2020” fast on December 25. While the 10th of Tevet is a minor fast day, as you can see it has some major significance in our Jewish history. I hope you will, as I will, think of the Holocaust victims for whom there is no actual yahrzeit date known and whose lives we remember on this day.

Men’s Club Humor

by Arnold Miller

A wealthy Jewish man buys a fabulous home in Beverly Hills. He brings in a local workman to decorate the place.

When the job is finished, the homeowner is delighted but realizes that he's forgotten to put mezuzahs on the doors.

He goes out and buys 50 mezuzahs and asks the decorator to place them on the right hand side of each door except bathrooms and kitchens.

He's really worried that the decorator will chip the paint or won't put them up correctly.

However, when he comes back a few hours later, he sees that the job has been carried out to his entire satisfaction.

He is so pleased that he gives the decorator a bonus.

As the decorator is walking out of the door he says, "Glad you're happy with the job.

By the way, I took out all the warranties in the little boxes and left them on the table for you!"

VOTE MERCAZ IN THE UPCOMING WORLD ZIONIST CONGRESS ELECTION

This month - beginning January 21, 2020 - we will be casting the first votes in the World Zionist Congress election.

This is a critically important election. A strong vote for MERCAZ - the official slate of the Conservative Movement - can help us translate our vision for a democratic and pluralistic Israel into critical policy outcomes, decision making positions within the National Institutions (World Zionist Organization), the Jewish Agency for Israel, and Keren Kayemth LeIsrael/Jewish National Fund), and millions of dollars for Masorti programs both in Israel and around the world.

We know that elections have consequences, both in Israel, and here in the United States. However, as Americans, we have very few opportunities to affect change in Israel. This is our chance. As American Jews who care deeply about Israel, we are facing a rare opportunity to make a difference - one that comes only every 5 years.

Beginning January 21, 2020, we can vote to elect MERCAZ representatives to the World Zionist Con-gress, where they will champion the need for a vi-brant pluralistic movement in Israel and specifically demonstrate American support for the core values of religious pluralism, democracy and equality for all Jews.

This opportunity is fleeting. The Congress meets once only every five years. This is our one opportunity to make a strong showing in this election and help us secure leadership positions and influence critical funding decisions for the future of the Conservative/Masorti Movement. Your vote for MERCAZ the official slate of the Conservative Movement, couldn’t be more important.

Voting begins on January 21, 2020 but you can sign-up by Pledging to Vote just go to MERCAZ2020.org or text VOTE to 917-336-1162. Once you take the Pledge – you will get updated information on the campaign and also be reminded when the election begins. We are asking for a strong turnout from this congregation and encourage you to sign-up family, friends, colleagues, as well. Finally, if you would like to get more involved in the campaign, please reach out to Rabbi Dennis or contact us at [email protected].

Please make sure your voice is heard and Pledge Your Vote today at MERCAZ2020.org
