Note from the Grand Knight
Happy month of the most Holy Rosary!
It’s hard to believe that we are already in October and 2
months shy of Christmas and 2018. First, I would like to
thank each and every one of you for all your hard work and
dedication to your church, community, and the Knights of
Columbus. We have accomplished many tasks this new
fraternal year between, trying out a booth at the Franciscan
Arts Festival, Turning Point Dinner Fund Raiser, Blue Mass,
90th
Anniversary support of our Catholic Schools, Fred B.
Valdez Scholarship Raffle, and Church Fiestas in just this
last month. So get your rest because we have more lined up!
DGK Ricky Medina is busy setting up support for the
Dominican Sisters of Chaparral so keep an eye out for his
future requests and support the upcoming Pancake Breakfast
at Holy Cross October 29th
for them. Habitat for Humanity
has started their build season again so if you have time
please support that mission. We will have our Friday Rosary
October 13th
which also happens to be the 100th
Anniversary
of the Last Apparition of Our Lady of Fatima. On the 14th
Brother Weston has set up a special Rosary at the Pink
Chapel as well as some great food at his house. On the 30th
we will have a special Rosary

The Knights of Columbus Council 9527 meets
every first Monday of the month at the Pope John
Paul II Annex at 7:00 p.m. They also hold an
officer/trustee meeting to discuss upcoming events
that is open to all members, on the last Monday of
every month at 7 p.m.
Special Invitation from Br. Weston
Lee Carmella and I are inviting all Knights and their families and friends to a rosary and
potluck dinner on Oct. 14th at 5:00 p.m. We will meet at the Chapel “Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel” (the pink building off Fort
Sheldon State Park road … 12365 Leasburg State Park Rd, just past the Fire Station on
the right) for a rosary and celebration of the 100 year Fatima. Then proceed to our house 740 Fossil View Rd. 88007. Carmella and I will
provide Brisket, hotdogs and turkey burgers and tea. Dinner theme will be “New Mexican
Spanish“. If someone could bring salad, desert, or other yummy side. Please RSVP so we know how, much food to buy. Hope to see
you then! "
Weston Lee
If you are unable to attend our events for any reason,
continue to pray daily for your fellow brothers and families
in the Knights of Columbus. Prayer is our most important
spiritual mission as part of the Church Militant. May the
Lord’s Blessings be upon you all.

Council Updates
Franciscan Festival of Fine Arts
This year our Council had a food booth at the Franciscan
Festival of Fine Arts which was held on the grounds of
the Holy Cross Retreat Center on Sept. 2rd
– 3rd
. We will
no longer have a booth at the Renaissance Faire. Council
members felt that this festival provides a more compatible
venue for the mission of the Knights of Columbus and has
significant advantages over the Renaissance Faire booth.
Besides ice cream, this year our menu included some
exciting new items such as “Sausage on a Serape” and
nachos which proved very popular with the kids & adults
alike. Br. Kurt Rathgeber was in charge of the project. He
reported that although the crowds were not as large as the
Renaissance Faire, we still managed to make a modest profit
for our efforts as well as showing support from the Knights
of Columbus. He felt that the change of venue was a good
move & volunteered to chair the project next year. He
extended his thanks for all Brother Knights who helped with
the booth.
Holy Cross Fiesta
The Holy Cross Church Fiesta was held on Sept. 29th
-30th
&
Oct.1st. Br. Joe Fleming served on the Parish Fiesta
Committee and organized the Community Flea Market
which was held on Saturday, Sept. 30th
. Council 9527
voted to purchase a space at the Flea Market. Donations of
items from our members overflowed our space. We were
only able to sell about half of them, but still raised a good
amount of money. Nothing went to waste, however, as Br.
Dennis St. George took all the leftovers to the St. Vincent
DePaul Thrift Store for refurbishing and re-sale. Items they
couldn’t use were given to the Restore Store.
THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH
It wasn’t long ago that cars didn’t have automatic headlight controls. Back then it was
easy to park your car & leave your headlights turned on. If you were gone for a long time, when you returned your battery would dead.
It had to be recharged before it would start.
Just like a car battery, our energy supply is
not infinite. Our busy days can be draining. Going at top speed, we can use all of our available emotional, physical, mental and
spiritual resources. Before we know it, our energy is consumed. I realized this after our
recent Church Fiesta!
Unless we watch ourselves, we can drain our “battery” to the point of being “dead on our
feet”. Fatigue can distort our perception and cause responses to others to be negative and
could result in physical or emotional illness.
In the age we live in we are sometimes faced
with what seems like overwhelming demands. It’s sometimes hard to give ourselves permission to rest or take a break. But the
rewards - renewed perspective, clearer insight, physical energy, spiritual
preparedness – are well worth it
Lady Jeanne Kinsella & John Byers bargaining with customer at our
Flea Market Booth. We had a lot of “Stuff” and a lot of bargains.
Our Knights also provided manpower for cooking & serving
a pancake breakfast, preparing hamburgers & hot dogs, and
help with the Enchilada Dinner. Kudos to Br. Al Sanchez
who stepped forward to head-up the pancake breakfast
committee and whip up his world famous fluffy pancakes. A
good turn-out was reported at these events and sales were
terrific!
Some of the pancake breakfast crew, L to R: Sylvester Sanchez, Michael
Baker, Al Sanchez, and (unidentified). Let’s do it again sometime guys!
A special thanks to all Knights and Ladies who helped to
make the Fiesta a huge success, many of whom spent
their entire week-end working at multiple events!
The “Dominican Sisters of Chaparral”
In response to the Dominican Sisters in Chaparral request for
help from the Knights, DGK Rick Medina has been working
on ways the Knights might be able to relieve some of their
problems.
Br. Rick, who is also the Faithful Navigator of Assembly
3330, along with Ralph Madrid and several other Knights

Thank you for all your support to date!
visited their property in Chaparral to assess their needs.
Their immediate needs were bedding (sheets, pillows,
blankets, etc. for twin beds). These have been somewhat
satisfied through donations from our Council and others in
our District. They no longer need bed frames, but still have a
need for furniture and personal items.
Knights in Action
Coats for Kids
Brother Narciso Holguin has now lined up 22 schools to help
collect gently used coats from the students. The coats will
be cleaned & distributed to needy children in our
community. He anticipates he will need more space for
storing them until they are cleaned & distributed. If any
Knight can help with storage space or can donate a used or
new coat to the cause, contact Narciso. With the colder
weather on our doorstep the need is urgent! Brother Narciso
announced that Council 9527 has now been designated an
exclusive partner with Comet Cleaners for the Coats for Kids
project.

community-wide fundraising dinner when a check in the

Brs. Joe Fleming and Kurt Rathgeber are to be commended
for ramrodding this effort to get a mobile ultrasound unit for

Ultrasound Program. Our State Council and Councils
throughout the state of New Mexico contributed their share
(50%) of the purchase price of the unit, while the Supreme
Council provided the remaining (50%).

A Founding Notion: Protecting the Breadwinner’s Income
While jobs may be safer in 2017, accidents, injuries, and
illnesses that can impact your ability to work still happen.
Most, in fact, do not happen on the jobsite or place of
employment. Did you know that a 2011 study revealed that
more than 95 percent of the long-term disability claims on file
were not work related?

Knight of the Month:
Narciso Holguin
Lady of the Month: Mrs. Narciso Holguin
Family of the Month:
Mr. & Mrs. Narciso Holguin Family
The Knights have always sought to protect members’ families
from the “loss” of a breadwinner. I’m sure you know all about
Father McGivney’s vision for our insurance program. But you
may not know that Father McGivney also wanted to find a way
to help members who couldn’t work because of an illness.
After all, the “loss” of the breadwinner does not have to mean
that person’s death; it can also mean the loss of the
breadwinner’s income.
Consider that loss for a moment. How would your family fare if
a source of income suddenly stopped? Could a dual-income
family manage on one income? What about young families
with a working father and a mother who cares for the children?
What if his income halted due to an accident or illness?
I’ve heard some people say they have coverage at work, but too
many aren’t sure what this coverage entails, how much income
it would provide or for how long. Having this protection counts
for something, certainly, but it isn’t “yours”; it’s provided by
the company for which you work at their discretion. It could be
eliminated tomorrow.
That’s where a personally-owned disability income insurance
product, like Income Armor, comes into play. It can offer
valuable income replacement in the event of an injury or
illness. If you have a job, you must know about this coverage.
