CHAPTER FIVE

ROBERT MARTIN 1811-1885

During our years of research on the MARTIN line, we have not found any document that would tend to taint the name. Quite the contrary, several documents reveal that ROBERT MARTIN was a Christian, and an upright, honest citizen all of his life. Miss BERNICE MANSELL, who is 90 years of age, a retired teacher from the Houston Independent School District, and who is a descendant of the father of SARAH SWEAT, said that her mother was born in the same area as ROBERT MARTIN. She said that her grandmother described ROBERT MARTIN as a “God-like” man.

I. ROBERT MARTIN, born May 4, 1811, in Rapides Parish, La., died November 10, 1885. He moved to Liberty County, Texas, living in that County until about 1852, at which time he moved to Refugio County, remaining there until the 1870’s, at which time he went to McMullen County, or the area which was later to become McMullen. He was outstanding in the civic, religious and political affairs of the county. He was a rancher and made several drives up the trail to the northern markets. He was one of the organizers, with his wife and a couple of his daughters, of the old N 2 Baptist Church at Refugio, which later became the Refugio Baptist Church and later the Blanconia Baptist Church which name survived until today and is still active. In 1860 he was a Justice of the Peace in Refugio County; in 1862 he was on a committee headed by Dr. WILLIAM P. McGREW to relieve the needs and distress of the families of men serving in the Confederate Army. In 1876 we find him serving as a county commissioner of Refugio County, and to back-track a bit, he served as a private in the 29th Brigade, Texas Militia, during the Civil War. He was a Baptist and a member of the Masonic order. He is buried by his wife’s side in Hill Top Cemetery in Tilden and his grave is marked with a headstone and a Confederate marker at the foot. ROBERT MARTIN was married November 23, 1830, in Rapides Ph., to SCLETA HOLLOWAY, born January 8, 1812, in Rapides Parish; died July 5, 1880, and is buried in Hill Top. They had:

The 1870 Census of Refugio County shows living in the home of ROBERT MARTIN, a male by the name of SOLOMON, born in 1858. I wouldn’t say that it would have been impossible for SCLETA to have borne him at age 50, but it is highly impossible. It is possible that he was an orphan or was a relative. We have no further record of him.

There are several children listed here on whom we do not have any information

and the ROBERT MARTIN family record lists some on whom we do not have information. This could be caused by the usual double naming system we use, ie; a first and middle name, the family using one name of the child and as it grew older, decided to use the other name.

We have nothing at all on ROBERT E. MARTIN, shown as six years old, in the

1850 Census of Liberty County, Texas. He is not shown in any of the succeeding census reports, so it is our conclusion he died between 1850 and 1860.

In the 1860 Census of Refugio County there is listed a CHRISTOPHER, born in

1854 and a WILLIAM born in 1859. CHRISTOPHER is not listed in any of the following census reports, but WILLIAM is in the 1870 Census of the same county, but that is the last record we have of him. It will likewise have to be concluded that they died early, or before reaching adulthood. They are not shown in the preceding list of children born to ROBERT and SCLETA.

The ROBERT MARTIN family record lists a DAVE or DAVID MARTIN who

was killed at a dance by GENE MURPHY for dancing with Miss MAGGIE SMITH. There is no age shown for DAVE, nor the date of the killing so we are not able to check back against the census reports to see if he was using his other name.

There is much work left to complete the genealogy of ROBERT MARTIN and

SCLETA HOLLOWAY and we hope that some of the younger members of this line will pick up and complete it. Time precludes the possibility of this compiler closing it to my satisfaction. This same thing applies to all of the other lines.

He was a rancher, and served as county judge of Refugio County, Texas. This couple became members of the old N 2 Baptist Church, it later becoming the Refugio Baptist Church, finally being named the Blanconia Baptist Church and is still in existence today. This couple had several children, which we name, as given to us but not necessarily in the order shown. Information was made available on only one. These children were: a. He assisted in the organization of the Trail Driver’s Association in San Antonio, and attended the meetings regularly. He made his last trip up the trail in 1875. He moved to McMullen County, where he served as sheriff for 14 years. They moved to Falfurrias about 1913, and he served as sheriff for eight years. 5. ZACHARIAH (RYE) MARTIN, born January 23, 1838, in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, died in 1921 and is buried in Hill Top Cemetery, Tilden, Texas. He moved, with his parents, to Liberty County, Texas, Batson Prairie, in 1847 and to Refugio County in 1852 thence McMullen County in 1881. He was a cattleman all his adult life, and during the Civil War was a member of the 29th Brigade, Texas Cavalry and was one of the early-day lawmen of McMullen County. His grave is marked with a civilian headstone, and with a Confederate marker at the foot of the grave. He registered his brand in Brand Book A-B-C, Refugio County, in 1853 as the Lazy Five Seven Two; thus the illustration is a reasonable facsimile.
