What a wonderful spring we have had weather-wise! I

have seen so many people out enjoying the outdoors and

spending time as a family. We are very fortunate that in

Winnipeg, we didn’t have to deal with a flood this year or

even a volcano erupting, and the snow melted away so

quickly.

Our students are working to become very aware of

environmental issues. We strive to be environmentally

friendly and take care of our world. “Did You Know”….

• Canadians take home 55 million plastic bags a

day! Help reduce this amount of garbage in our landfills

by bringing your own reusable bags when you shop.

• 30% of all Canadian household garbage is from

wrappers and packaging?

• Turning off the tap water when brushing your teeth

can save 16 litres of water in just 3 minutes!

• Over 130 million cell phones are thrown out each

year and only 12.5% of electronic products get recycled

each year. Where do the rest of the products go??

These statistics are food for thought. Our students are

working to do our part to be environmentally aware and

the “litterless lunch” campaign was a success. Thank you

to the grade 6 students and staff who spearheaded it and

to the students who did their part in reducing the amount

of garbage we produce.

Let’s all try to do our part to make this a cleaner

world for the next generations.

Our musical, Oliver, was a huge success. Thank you to

Mrs. Le Grand for another excellent “musical” year. The

many parents who attended and students who participated

enjoyed the evening immensely.

Our last year’s priorities for the school year were:

1. to work to strengthen instructional practices in math

and literacy skills with ICT

2. Continue to sustain our caring, inclusive and healthy

community

At our planning day, May 7th, we will be discussing these

priorities. This past year, our early years classes have

been involved in Reading Recovery, math and literacy

stations, guided reading and math plus many more

initiatives. Our intermediate grades have been involved in

the Middle Years Math model and the grade 4 classes

piloted a new ELA resource. Guided math and reading

also took place in our middle years classrooms. These are

only a few examples of the wonderful teaching that is

happening in the school. Our students have made

excellent gains to date.

Robertson School is an inclusive education school that

values a strong academic program, focuses on intervention

in the early years and values inclusion. We support the

musical and visual arts as well as activity for healthy

living. We will continue to work towards helping our

students develop into well-rounded citizens. Our next

year’s priorities will reflect these values.

On Tuesday, May 4th, we will honour our wonderful

volunteers at the annual Volunteer Tea. We are blessed

to have such a wonderful community and so many of you

give your time and resources to the school. Please join us

in thanking you (invitations have been sent out however,

if we inadvertently missed you, please call the school). It

will be held in the Multi Purpose Room.

Our grade 6 classes get the wonderful opportunity to go to

Camp Stephens on May 26, 27 and 28. Thank you to

Parent Council for your financial support that goes

towards this unique outdoor experience. Their memories

will last a lifetime.

Please plan on attending our annual Parent Council

community Bar-B-Q which will take place on

Wednesday, June 9th (5:30 -8:00). It is an excellent

opportunity to meet friends and neighbours at the school

and share some food and good times. See you there!

HERD OF ROADRUNNERS?

We will be training the grade 4’s during the month of May. Room 133 will be training from Monday May 10th to Friday May 14th. Room 134 will be training from Monday May 17th to Friday May 21st. After training, two or three squads of Grade 4’s and 5’s will be on patrol for the rest May and June. Patrols will be informed about which squad they will be on. There will be a patrol outing to Fun Mountain on June 17th with a BBQ lunch. This is for gr. 5 and gr. 6 patrols. The grade 5 and 6 patrols enjoyed a movie afternoon with treats on April 23rd. Intramural Floor Hockey

Floor hockey came to an end recently after many vigorously contested matches. Congratulations to all students who participated. Games were played with good sportsmanship and effort. It was nice to have games in the new facility and all participants benefited from the increased level of physical activity the new gym brings to our contests. Interschool Activities for May and early June

Both softball and the fit run will take place during the month of May or early in June. Softball will be an option for interested Gr. 5 and 6 students. Each grade will attend separate tournaments as well as girls having a separate tournament from the boys. The running club will begin soon for interested Gr. 4, 5, and 6 students who enjoy running longer distances. This is a competitive run that takes place at Assiniboine Park. Participants will train in preparation for a 2 km. run against students from other division schools. More information will be provided to those students who say they are interested in participating in these activities.

May Music News from Mrs. Le Grand

Congratulations to the cast of “Oliver”. Don’t we have wonderful performers at Robertson School? Thank you for all your hard work. Thank you to the Parent Council for their continued support. The show was a great success! The choir will continue learning new music and enjoying old songs until the end of June. Some students will be practicing for the Volunteer Tea in May and the Grade 6 Farewell in June. Music never stops. May and June are very busy months and we will continue to learn new songs, discover new sounds, play new games and learn about Rock and Roll in the music room.

HELP PROTECT YOUR CHILD’S HEARING • Ear infection is the most common medical problem in young children. • Ear infection can cause hearing loss. Hearing loss from ear infection can be treated. • Hearing loss can delay speech and language development and make learning at school more difficult. • If your child has an earache, draining from the ear or often asks you to repeat what you say, take your child to the

doctor. • All kindergarten children will have their hearing tested at school. • If your child has difficulty with the school hearing test, you will be contacted. A visit to the doctor may be

LITTERLESS LUNCH WEEK………………

Our Litterless Lunch Week was a huge success! The grade six Litterless Lunch Leaders of room 105 saw more students making an effort to be litterless and all students should be congratulated on their efforts! We ran out of litterless lunch tickets on several days! Your small effort to be litterless has had a positive impact on the environment. We hope that many of you continue to be litterless! Not only did our Earth appreciate your effort, but the lunch moms and custodians as well! The winners of the Frisbees were:

TABS FOR WHEELCHAIRS Thanks once again for supporting Tabs for Wheelchairs! A presentation will be made to Emma with her Zippie GS Manual Paediatric Wheelchair on Thursday, May 27th at 1:00 p.m. in the Holy Cross School Gym. The next recipient will be Tarok, who is very much looking forward to his specialized wheelchair!

Our volunteer tea is our chance to say thank you to parents for all your help throughout the year. We do our best to send out invitations to all our volunteers, but if somehow you were missed, our apologies and please come anyways!

for the Nursery Program. Please drop by the school to pick up your application

NURSERY - KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATIONS FOR SEPTEMBER, 2010

Registration for the 2010 - 2011 school year started on Monday, April 5, 2010. You may pick up your application forms in the school office between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Nursery students must be 4 years old before December 31, 2010 and Kindergarten students must be 5 years old before December 31, 2010. Please remember to bring your child’s birth certificate and your Manitoba medical card when registering your child. If your child is presently attending Nursery classes with Ms. Wendy Challis, please let her know of your intentions for next year, that is, whether or not your child will be attending Kindergarten at Robertson School.


FITNESS CLASS

On Thursdays, beginning April 29th from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m., a Fitness Class for parents/guardians of Robertson School students will be offered in the multi-purpose room. Our instructor will be Tunde, who will meet your requests for your fitness needs. There will be no charge for this class. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Please come out and join us. Hope to see you there! Free child care will be provided in room 148. If you have any questions, please contact Nancy Adkins in the Parent/Family room 148.

Remember families - you are always welcome to drop in to the Parent/Family room 148 at 8:40 a.m., 11:10 a.m., 12:45 p.m. and 3:10 p.m. Please join us and meet with your neighbours for coffee, tea, snacks, books, toys, sharing conversation and fun. See you there! Nancy Adkins

ROBERTSON SCHOOL PARENT COUNCIL ‘WORKING TOGETHER FOR THE CHILDREN”

Dear Parents/Guardians It’s hard to believe we have only two months of this school year left. Lives will be getting busy with spring sports again. I hope many of you had the opportunity to see the performance of Oliver. Mrs. Le Grand always puts so much effort into our musical every year and the students did a wonderful job. This is the time we usually start planning our community BBQ. We will be having the BBQ on June 9th. You will be receiving your food pre-order form and a letter requesting volunteers towards the end of May. Please make sure that you take the time to fill these letters out so we can plan accordingly. This is a great evening that everyone enjoys and we hope to see many Robertson School families and friends there. Our next Parent Council meeting on May 12th is our election meeting. We have three executive positions up for election. Co-Chair, Treasurer and Secretary. There are also committees that we require someone to take on. This year we have had a few new parents attending our meeting which is great to see. I would love to see more new faces. With over 400 students in the school, seven to ten parents is quite a small group to help run parent council. We definitely could use some extra volunteers. Sincerely, Bonnie Janzen #589-4745
