Administrative Team’s Message

“Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road…..”(I will leave the rest of the song you remember from your grad to Green Day) yes that song does mean that graduation is fast upon us and the end of another school year. For many of our students this spells the end of a planned 13 years in our building designed to catapult them into the fast track of society. For the rest of our grades it means a transition to another grade. Celebrations of milestones and landmarks of the year and the calm and quiet of summer that awaits before the challenges of another year that lies ahead. Please do not put the carriage in front of the horse. Graduating students and high school students your hard work is required right up to the end of the month. Keep a level of focus and urgency as the end of the month approaches to ensure your own personal success.

This June we say goodbye (not quite Good Riddance as the song title from the lyrics I opened with from Green Day may lead to) to 25 potential grads. We have all worked long and hard as students, parents, and staff to get you to this point in your life. Now is not the time to slow down as the life that awaits is fast moving and ever changing. You get out of life what you put into it, so I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you not to slow down and to keep plugging away but don’t forget to enjoy the moments that come your way.

On behalf of the staff here at Rocanville School we are also saying goodbye and thank you to Miss Karly Fregin and Miss Candy Lam from our teaching staff as their contracts have come to an end. Your energy, attention to detail and passion for teaching has been appreciated by both the students and staff around you. Your efforts have been appreciated in the memories we have shared throughout this school year. Best of luck in your future endeavours.

As a school we are also saying farewell from our teaching ranks to our principal, Mr. Todd Volk. Thirty years is a lot of teaching in 2 school divisions and 3 schools. When Mr. Volk graduated from high school I was born! (I remind him of this regularly!) And my goodness you have seen some radical change in education. Your six years of teaching, coaching and administration here at Rocanville School has shaped the lives of the many students and staff that you have crossed paths with along the way. May your tee offs on the golf courses be straight down the fairway as too your retirement years. Be sure to stop into Pharmasave in Moosomin to say “hi” to the ol’ boy! My retirement is in nineteen years, which means you are very much stuck with me for a while!

In the midst of all of these goodbyes and farewells brings welcomes and new challenges for our learning in the year that lies ahead. We want to extend an early welcome to our Kindergarten class for next year as well as each returning student to the grade that awaits them. I also want to take this opportunity to extend a brief welcome and introduction to our new Principal Mr. Nathan Bromm who comes to us from Weyburn Junior High. We look forward to having him lead and join our educational journey here in Rocanville for the years that lie ahead.

There are countless thank you’s to give to the community for your support, cooperation, and patience with the many events, activities and children’s education that we are all passionately connected to. The students for your hard work, attention to detail and willingness to make this school an exciting place to be each and every day. The first nation’s cultures very much believe in the concept of that it takes a community to raise a child, rural communities are no different. On behalf of Rocanville School thank you for another successful school year, our efforts have been rewarded and we made it through another year. We look forward to taking on this challenge with you again this coming September.

Enjoy your summer and be safe where ever the holiday takes you.

Snack Shack

The last day the Snack Shack will be open for this school year is June 17th. ALL PROFITS from the Snack Shack are used to cover school trips. Thank you to all students and staff who have volunteered their time in the Snack Shack over this school year as well as to those who have supported it with their purchases.

Pizza Wednesdays

The last Pizza Wednesday will be June 8th.

Thank you for your support this year!

Shoe Reminder When you are planning ahead for all those “new” items for the next school year, please remember to purchase non-marking runners for your child to wear in both of our gyms. We realize that many black-soled shoes have “non-marking” stickers on them but be wary of those claims, particularly on the less expensive shoes. Your co-operation in this matter in the past has made a noticeable contribution to the upkeep of our gym and stage floors. We thank you for that and for your continued efforts this coming year.

June Library News

Wow! Another school year is drawing to a close. It seems like we are just nicely getting under way and it’s suddenly time to wrap up. It is always a sad time of year for me as I say good bye to the students in the Graduating Class. I always wonder how they will do and what will become of them. Congratulations and the Best of Luck in the future. On a happier note holidays are just around the corner and memories are waiting to be made. With the end of the year sneaking up on us I would just like to remind you to ensure that your child has returned all of their library books and text books. Books are very costly to replace and we only have just enough for our larger classes. If text books are not returned by exam time you will be charged to replace them. Just a little heads up for next year. We will be having Lifetouch do our school pictures again. They will be here to do them on Tuesday, September 6/2016. When all the details are worked out for what classes we will have etc. a schedule will be posted for the teachers. Make sure you are reading over the summer. It is a great way to relax and stay out of the hot sun as well as being educational. Have a great summer!

Junior Badminton

Junior badminton has come to a conclusion for another season. We had a small group this year with

only ten athletes from grade eight and grade nine. Our grade eight students were Noelle DeCorby, Chris

Lonseth, Dawson Springer and Drew Bell. Our grade nine students were Tyler Stewart, Bailey Williamson,

Brett Stangeland, Josh Loreto, Sam Green and Janna Abud. We also had four grade seven students who

were brought up from the rookie team to participate in junior pre-districts: Ethan Roden, Chandie Haryung,

Dakota Machniak and Maria Green.

Pre-districts were held in Rocanville on May 3rd. Our team played hard and we had five athletes who

moved on to districts: Tyler Stewart and Bailey Williamson for mixed doubles, Brett Stangeland and Dawson

Springer for boys doubles, and Noelle DeCorby for girls singles. These athletes went to Stoughton on May 7

and all made it into the playoff round.

A big thank you to all the seniors who helped out with junior badminton this year, and thank you to

all our athletes for your hard work and dedication this season.

Coaches: Miss Down and Mrs. Lowe

Rookie Badminton

This year we opened up the Rookie Badminton season with 15 athletes from Grades 6 & 7. They were all very eager to get out on the court during practices and games. We practiced Mondays and Fridays at lunch, time permitting, and Wednesdays after school throughout the season, playing 2 exhibition home/away games against Moosomin and one visit to Wapella. After these games it was confirmed that we had some very talented athletes!

The team went back to Wapella for the pre-district round robin tournament. The kids competed very well. Although Karyssa Watson was the only athlete to move on to districts in Moosomin that Saturday finishing second in girls doubles, we had many entries come just shy of moving on finishing third and others had to opt out due to previous plans on the Saturday.

So on May 7th, Karyssa went to Moosomin to compete in Districts where there was some great competition which made for some very exciting matches! In the end Karyssa finished in 3rd place! Way to go Karyssa.

Overall we had a very successful season! Congratulations to all on a job well done!

STAR SEARCH Quarter Finals - June 4th

There will be lots of exciting events happening that day including Breakfast at the golf course, a sidewalk sale, ribbon cutting at the Borderland Co-op C-Store, bouncers for the kids, Rocanville Soccer Club will be hosting their league tournament, Pulled Pork Supper, and so much more!

Volunteers Needed! We are in need of volunteers to help out during GX94 Starsearch (Saturday, June 4th). We need volunteers to sell tickets for the supper and cabaret, people to help with the canteen that the pool is doing for the soccer tournament, and people to help with the set up and clean up of the cabaret.

Please consider helping out in any way that you can. An event like this will not be successful without the support of volunteers.

If you are interested in volunteering email [email protected] or call 306-645-2164.
