If you enjoy Rock 'n' Roll —

and other four-letter

words — you'll love Jive.

Jive is about Rock 'n' Roll. And it's

about the music

that led to it. It explains how Rock 'n' Roll happened.

And why it had to happen.

Jive traces the development of popular music in

America back to its three basic roots: ra

ce music, hillbilly

music, and Tin Pan Alley. It even goes beyond these roots

to Europe, Asia, Africa, and to wherever the music calls.

We'll explore Ragtime, Dixieland, Boogie Woogie,

Swing, Honky Tonk, Blues, Country and Western, Jump

Blues, and more — all from a Rock 'n' Roll point of view.

In this volume of Jive

, and in the volumes to come,

we'll delve into the explicit and implicit subculture jargon

that has become an integral part of our music heritage.

We'll learn what rock and roll really mean. And we'll

probe the origins of such terms as funk, jazz, rags, jive,

mojo, sham, gigs, juke, and many, many more. Hence

Jive's subtitle — Rock 'n' Roll and other four-letter words.

MUSIC / PUZZLES

Jive is the result of my infatuationwith Rock 'n' Roll. I was 13 yearsold when Elvis appeared on theDorsey Brothers' television program,Stage Show, on January 28, 1956,and can still remember watching, incredulously as he introduced Rock'n' Roll to the world. It's been anintegral part of my life ever since.

Thefifties remainspecial.Theywereof another time — pre-cd, pre-fm, pre-stereo, even pre-album. We weren'tsure of what we had, or if it wouldlast. The music was racy, raunchy andrebellious, and, at the time, seemed tosay it all. Rock 'n' Roll used to be fun!

But Rock 'n' Roll didn't just suddenly happen one winter's night in 1956. It was a long time coming. And its roots

were black and white and colorful.Jive traces the roots of Rock 'n' Roll

through 100 years of popular music in America,

and beyond.ISSN 0838-4363
