REMEMBER LIFE IN RUSSIA…

NOBILITY
INTELLECTUALS
Capitalism in the Industrial Revolution
Capitalist Ideas:
Progress results when people follow own self-interest
Businesses follow self-interest thru competition w/ other businesses for $$$
Each producer provides goods that are better and cheaper than the competition
Consumers compete to purchase best goods at lowest prices
Market economy aims to produce best products & lowest prices
Government should not interfere w/ the economy
KARL MARX THOUGHT ALL OF THIS WAS VERY, VERY BAD!
MARX BELIEVED THIS WAS THE CAUSE OF CLASS
STRUGGLES…THE HAVES AGAINST THE HAVE-NOTS
THE BOURGEOISIE (FACTORY OWNERS/WEALTHY)
VERSUSVERSUS
THE PROLETARIAT (FACTORY WORKERS)
MARX WAS A SOCIALIST…
Three Goals of SocialismThree Goals of Socialism:
1. To distribute wealth and economic opportunities equally among people
2. Government controls all major decisions about production
3. Public ownership of land, factories, etc.--meaning, the gov’t has a say in most
economic aspects “for the good of the people.”
BUT TOOK IT A BIT FURTHER…
• Marxist Ideas:
• Great movements in history result from an economic class struggle
• The “haves” (rich factory owners) take advantage of the “have-nots” (workers)
• The Industrial Revolution intensified the class struggle• Workers are exploited by owners• Labor of workers creates profits for employers• The capitalist system will eventually destroy itself. The
state (gov’t) will wither away as a classless society develops
Communism: A Complete Form of Socialism
Karl Marx:
“Workers of the world, unite!”
• Class struggles b/t the “haves” & the “have-nots”
• Workers will overthrow capitalists (factory owners) in revolution
• Marxism (same as communism)
Communism is one class in society-- no rich or poor; communal ownership of property, no gov’t
Command economy: state owns land, natural resources, industry, banks, media, etc.
Gov’t controls decisions about economy
No private property
•Private ownership of land
•Freedom of competition
•Results in unequal economic classes
•Upper class and working class struggle over wealth
•Tokens given out unequally •A few students had more tokens than the rest•Competition in the form of the game itself
•Those with few or no tokens have hard time acquiring more •Only a few students were able to prosper during the game
•Working class carries out plan to overtake upper class
• Gov’t owns industry•Goal is to bring economic equality•Aims for a classless society
•Those who did not succeed point out unfairness; want to change game
•Alternative solutions suggested: equal distribution of tokens•Teacher collects tokens and redistributes equally
•Goal of classless society achieved•No government needed•Instead- Dictatorship of the Proletariat
•No student had more token than another•Everyone equally “wealthy”•Teacher not needed– everyone equal
DISCUSS…
• What are some advantages of a Marxist, classless society?
• What are some disadvantages?
• What do you think peasants in Russia might have thought about Marx’s ideas?
CAPITALIST OR SOCIALIST?
• MARINA HIGH SCHOOL (socialist)
• A CHILD’S LEMONADE STAND (capitalist)
• A SOUP KITCHEN (socialist)
• GOVERNMENT HEALTH CARE FOR ALL CITIZENS (socialist)
• STARBUCKS (capitalist)
