Many times in my life these words and the ones that follow have brought me peace. There is nothing magical about them – nothing magical about my saying them. But there is a deep and enduring truth that Isaiah proclaims: if God is such as this, why should I worry? Why should I fear? For those who have eyes to see and ears to hear (to paraphrase Jesus) it would seem as though there are many things to fear in our life: global warming, terrorism and war, economies that threaten collapse, guns and drugs in places that destroy our community, interpersonal division that weakens our collective strength…you know the list, both personal and public. What you may not know is that there is nothing on that list – yours or mine, personal or public – that God is unable to handle. It troubles me that as a church we don’t proclaim that truth more often and more clearly. The truth of the resurrection of Jesus is the truth that Isaiah shouts from the chapters of history – Have you not known? Have you not heard? God is the everlasting Creator…and you shall not fear! The last words in that sentence are mine; but read the chapter for yourself and see if you don’t agree that Isaiah proclaims a freedom and a peace in the midst of a tumultuous and uncertain world.

Jesus has won this freedom for us. The Father gives it to us as a gift. If the uncertainty of our times has been gnawing at the edges of your mind lately, perhaps we have gone too far; far enough at least that Isaiah’s voice grows faint. Come back. Come back to a habit of regular worship where that voice is clear. Come back to a practice of personal/family devotion and prayer where that voice draws you into relationship with God. Come back to a lifestyle of generosity and giving where that voice is experienced as the material goodness of a generous God. Are you looking for peace? I know where it is found; and now so do you. It’s not magic, it’s more powerful than that. It is truth. Only the word of God, and the truth of that word has the power to bring real peace. Have you not known? Have you not heard? Then it’s time we remembered! God’s peace to you, Pr Steve

40 Days of Community

During Lent of 2008, Zion will be taking part in the 40 Days of Community Program. Many will remember the 40 Days of Purpose program Zion participated in two years ago. 40 Days of Purpose addressed the question, “What on Earth Am I Here For?” 40 Days of Community addresses the question “What on Earth are We Here For”. Organizational efforts are now underway. An informational meeting is set for June 6 at 7:00 pm for all who would like to learn more about 40 Days of Community. Talk with Pastor Steve or Pastor John if you have questions.

“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord our God Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord our God Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord our God Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord our God is the everlasting God, Creator of the ends of the earth…” is the everlasting God, Creator of the ends of the earth…” is the everlasting God, Creator of the ends of the earth…” is the everlasting God, Creator of the ends of the earth…”

Aaron & Mary Suomala Folkerds Greetings Zion!Greetings Zion!Greetings Zion!Greetings Zion! Much has happened since we visited with you a few weeks ago for Helena’s baptism. The biggest news is that we now have a call! Mary and I were offered a call at the Prairie Land Lutheran Parish, a four point parish located in the Hanska/LaSalle area. We will both serve as co-pastors with each of us working ¾ time. The individual churches have been around for years but their organization as a four-point is only a year old. We will actually be the first pastors to serve their newly formed parish. We are very excited for this opportunity that will begin in September. My current position as a chaplain resident at Advocate Christ Medical Center, located on the south side of Chicago, will end in August. Mary will have the summer here in Chicago to spend time with Helena and perhaps work a few hours at the seminary. On Sunday, May 20th Mary and I will officially graduate from The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC). We have been studying for almost five years and we are extremely excited to be done and to receive our Master of Divinity degrees. Mary’s parents, my parents, my sister and brother-in-law will be coming down for the graduation. It will be a big celebration! Our dual ordination will be held at our Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo on July 22nd. The details are still being worked out. This will be quite a summer in our family; a retirement and an ordination! Helena is doing extremely well and will not need an additional surgery this summer as the doctors were originally thinking. Her oxygen for no scientific reason went up by ten points. The doctor has no idea why that happened, but it did and we are ecstatic! She will need an additional surgery sometime this winter in which we will return to our hospital here in Chicago. She is an amazing girl! She is already crawling, loves to chew on books and to throw Cheerios! Thank you again for all your love and support during the last five years of study here in Chicago. We could not have done this without you! Watch for more ordination news soon! God Bless, Aaron, Mary and Helena Suomala Folkerds

Communion Assistants and Greeters Want to help out at church, but don’t have a lot of spare time? Consider being a communion assistant or a greeter. Both of these volunteer opportunities are very short time commitments. Communion assistants and greeters are called on only a few times per year to help. Whether you are a long time member of Zion, or brand new, we welcome your participation in either area. Call Marv Jopp if you are interested in more information at 763.682.9025.

Harvest of Hands

Harvest of Hands meets twice a month – the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 7:00 P.M. in the Wilderness Room. We work on crafts for our big event in November. Some of the crafts that we will work on are vellum candle shades, teacher gift jars, knotted scarves, and coasters. We have made kits for people to complete at home. These kits are located in the Narthex. Please take a kit and return it completed by September. If you have any ideas for crafts or for the sale, please let us know. We encourage new people to come for an evening

of fun, friendship, and treats.

Meals on Wheels

June is Zion’s month to deliver Meals on Wheels to seniors in Buffalo. We are asked to provide 3 drivers per day. This is a most rewarding activity and makes a great family service project. Consider which days you can help and sign up on the chart in the narthex. Drivers are asked to be at Lake Ridge Care Center (formerly Ebenezer) at 11:45am. Thank you for participating in this special community outreach.

Summer Musicians

Use your talents this summer to provide special music for one of our summer worship services on Sunday mornings.

Instrumentalists, pianists, vocalists, groups or solos… you are invited! Interested in Monday nights at Marysville? There’s a special music spot for you there too! Call the church office to volunteer.

Food For Friends Know some one who could use Know some one who could use Know some one who could use Know some one who could use a meal from a friend? a meal from a friend? a meal from a friend? a meal from a friend?

It’s that time again to stock our freezers with Food for Friends. We are in need of cash donations to buy food supplies as well as volunteers to help cook. We’ll be cooking Saturday, June 23rd from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Even if you can’t make it on Saturday, we could use some volunteers to pre-cook the meat just prior to Saturday.) Please give your cash donations to the church, marked Food For Friends; contact Julie Kabe if you are interested in cooking (682-2889). Your time and gifts are greatly appreciated! Food For Friends (FFF) is a ministry to help ease the burden of our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ who are going through a particularly difficult time in their life. If you know of someone who could use a meal, feel free to get and deliver them freezer meals (located in the church freezer). Or, call the church and tell them of the need and we’ll arrange for a warm and/or frozen meal to be delivered to them from one of our FFF volunteers. Our friends who have received FFF meals have been very appreciative.

God’s Gardeners: Thanks to volunteer Thanks to volunteer Thanks to volunteer Thanks to volunteer gardenersgardenersgardenersgardeners

There are 31 “memorial gardens” around the grounds of Zion (the vast majority are located along the parking lot on the South side of the building.) This gardening ministry is going strong, not only do the gardeners enjoy it, but so does the rest of the congregation. Thanks gardeners, for all your efforts! Three spots are still available for this year. If you are interested in becoming involved in the program—contact Sherilyn in the church office, and we will get you going! Good planting, and God bless God’s Gardeners!

Church Archives Help preserve Zion’s HistoryHelp preserve Zion’s HistoryHelp preserve Zion’s HistoryHelp preserve Zion’s History The Zion Foundation has provided funds for microfilming and storage of Zion’s archives. Some of our records are being microfilmed through a program of the ELCA Region 3 Archives, and all of our historical records will be sorted, indexed, and stored in new archival quality files. Volunteers are needed for the following • Help sort and index archive

materials for storage • Digitally photograph our oldest

record books so that we can easily access the information as needed without handling the original records (although they are being microfilmed, Zion staff do not have ready access to a microfilm reader for routine look-ups)

• Record oral histories from some of Zion’s long-time members If you are interested in helping, please contact Angela Bengtson.

Memory Book for Pastor John A memory book is being planned for Pastor Folkerds. It will be presented to him on his retirement. We encourage each family to share a message, memory, picture or favorite story. Details are available on the church website and will be in next month’s newsletter.

Summer Bible Study Act Boldly for MissionAct Boldly for MissionAct Boldly for MissionAct Boldly for Mission Kelly Fryer’s three-session summer bible study “explores how women can boldly take part in God’s mission to love and bless and save the world. To be the church, she says, is to participate in that mission by sharing the good news about Jesus Christ in word and deed.

With the Message of Jesus Jesus came proclaiming, “The kingdom of God has come near!” Then he spent his entire ministry telling us and showing us what that kingdom is like. In this session, we’ll hear about God’s dream for the world by looking together at some of Jesus’ kingdom parables as told by Luke. We’ll discover that God’s dream is for us. And we’ll learn about God’s plan to share this dream with the whole world through us.”

Lutheran Women Today, May 2007

There are 3 opportunities to join in this study in June: Sunday, June 17 at 7:00 pm in the Zion Library Tuesday, June 19 at 9:30 am in the Zion Library Thursday, June 21 at 7:00 pm, location TBD (please call the office) “With the Message of Jesus” can be found in the June issue of Lutheran Women Today. If you do not subscribe to the “Lutheran Women Today” magazine, stop by the information desk, in the Narthex, to pick up your copy of the Bible study. Historic Marysville

Country Church Monday evening services Monday evening services Monday evening services Monday evening services

begin June 4thbegin June 4thbegin June 4thbegin June 4th During June, July & August services are held at the Marysville Church, on County Road 9 between Buffalo and Waverly, each Monday evening at 7:00 pm. The Swedesburg (AKA Marysville) Church

was organized by Pastor Nelson in February 1873. The same pastors served the Swedesburg and Carlslund (later know as Zion) congregations until Swedesburg disbanded in 1950 and the members joined Zion. In 1973 the building was restored to celebrate the centennial of Swedesburg and Monday evening summer services commenced at that time.

Marysvlle is just a short 10-15 minute drive from downtown Buffalo. From the stoplights by the courthouse/library, head west on Lake Blvd N/CR 35. After 3 miles turn left and follow CR 35/CR 9. After 1.8 miles turn left and continue on CR 9. Marysville is a further 2.5 miles on the right. Remember that this is a little country church with no modern amenities.

Reducing Newsletter Costs With the postage rate increases of May 14, the annual cost of sending out our newsletter was set to increase by over $1900 per year. This month we have reduced the size of the newsletter from a postal ‘flat’ to a postal ‘letter’, and separated newsletters going to Buffalo from those going to other 553 zip codes. By implementing these two changes we were able to limit the increase to about $770 per year. Most of the extra work falls to our dedicated crew that labels and tapes the newsletter so additions to the crew are always welcome. Preparation of the July newsletter is tentatively scheduled for 9am on Tuesday June 26. If you’d like to help prepare the newsletter occasionally or regularly, please contact Angela in the church office.

Another way that we can keep the cost of the newsletter down is to send e-newsletters to more members instead of printed newsletters. If 155 of the 1300 families that currently get the printed newsletter switch to the e-newsletter we can completely offset the increased postage. Contact Angela to receive the e-newsletter or sign up online.

The newsletter currently costs approximately $5500 in postage each year or $4.25 per household.

The New Hymnal is Here! Evangelical Lutheran WorshipEvangelical Lutheran WorshipEvangelical Lutheran WorshipEvangelical Lutheran Worship The ELCA has published a new worship resource book and hymnal called Evangelical Lutheran Worship. Our current green hymnal, Lutheran Book of Worship, was published in 1978. The Worship and Music Committee has reviewed the hymnal and recommended to the Church Council that we purchase it. The Church Council approved the recommendation. The book contains most of our favorite hymns as well as introducing many new ones. There are new worship settings and also settings that will be similar to those with which we have already become familiar. Look for the hymnal display in the narthex. Congregational members have opportunity to memorialize a hymnal in

honor or in memory of a loved one for $20.00 per book. hank you to those who have already given a gift to purchase ELW hymnals. A complete list of donors will be acknowledged at a later time. If you would like to donate a hymnal please fill out a form found on the hymnal display in the narthex, or contact the church office.

The Stewardship of Life 'Life is an accomplishment. Each moment has a meaning and you must use it. Life is given to you like a flat piece of land and everything has to be done. I hope that when I'm finished, my piece of land will be a beautiful garden.' -Actress Jeanne Moreau The question each of us must deal with as Christian stewards is what our 'piece of land' will be like when God tells us we are finished with it.

Pastor Kelly Chatman wrote the following article in the May Redeemer newsletter. They are in the process of considering a capital campaign. If someone were to ask me how things are looking around Redeemer these days, I would respond by telling them the story about a woman who was having an interesting hair day. The woman's hair looked like she might have accidentally inserted her finger in a light socket. It was a very awkward moment. There was nothing ahe could do but try to make light of the situation, so she asked good naturedly, "How do you like my hair?". Her friend stood there for a moment and then replied, "it looks as if it's about to become something wonderful." An ever present challenge to the church is God's vision that the world is to become wonderful, something new. God's vision for the world is the constant reminder that we were not called to live for the world but for the restoration of God's creation to become something wonderful. It is so easy to become consumed by the challenges of everyday life and not focus on the vision God has given for us in Jesus Christ. The Christian invitation is to participate in God's vision to restore the world to something wonderful. God's vision is particularly revealed when that wonder is manifested in the lives of people who are poor, widows, and those that are estranged from us.

For the past two weeks, I've watched the tulip bulbs planted last fall with great anticipation. Last fall, friends from Westwood planted tulip bulbs, and during the past weeks, we have watched as those bulbs have tried to push their way through the hardened dirt and cold winter nights. Last Sunday, the bulbs began to open and shine forth their bright colors as they reached towards the sun. Like those bulbs, God blesses us to open ourselves to our community and to offer up the diversity of our congregation and partner churches as we reach toward the Son to celebrate God's wonder for the world. Last month, I made an appeal to our Church Council to begin a capital campaign to restore our roof and building to the condition and wonder of its past years. The years of wear and tear have taken a quite significant toll. The council challenged me to begin the process of inviting the congregation to explore the possibility of such a campaign, mindful that this must be an undertaking of the CONGREGATION and not the PASTOR. What an opportunity for our congregation to work together to restore our building to the kind of beauty and wonder our founders once knew.

monthly supervision to ensure that they are providing the best quality Christian care to their care receivers.

• Stephen Ministry is a confidential ministry. What a care receiver tells a Zion Caregiver remains confidential. Even in supervision, the names of care receivers and specific details are never discussed. Our Zion Caregivers know all about receiving care. Many of them have been on the receiving end of care at an earlier point in their lives, something that has motivated them to give care now. They know how difficult it is to ask for help, but they also know the great personal and spiritual growth and healing that follows. They know how to respond in a loving, caring and nonjudgmental manner. They are equipped and ready to provide the comfort and care God very much desires you to have.

If you find yourself now or in the future facing difficulties in your life and don’t know where to turn, please consider the help of a Zion Caregiver to listen and provide you with the encouragement and care that you need. If you could use the help of a Zion Caregiver, contact Judy or Peter Weis, Stephen Ministry Leaders at 763-682-7014 or Pastor John.

Stewards of the Land By Marj StewigBy Marj StewigBy Marj StewigBy Marj Stewig

When Zion built the addition in 2004 the building committee was looking for a low maintenance way of maintaining the back of the property, between the back of Zion and Lake Mary (a conservation lake). A Prairie Restoration project fit the desired amount of maintenance to the area. The Prairie is now in its 3rd growing season and had its first burn. In the earlier years we mowed with a large mower once or twice a year to allow light for the new plants. Why a burn? The prescribed burn discourages exotic species from entering into the prairie and undesirable woody plants from taking residence. The day of the burn was an exciting one as many people stopped to see what was burning. This area will continue to grow and become homes to the song birds and other wild life while in need of very little care. The congregation should be proud to be conscious stewards of the land as we know our Ecosystems are experiencing many challenges daily. We invite those curious individuals to take a walk through the prairie to experience the sound, ever changing color and the Peacefulness of this area as it sets along the Lake shore of Lake Mary.

I would like to thank everyone for the wonderful plaque and flowers I received for directing the Joy Choir for the last ten years. The plaque says "Life is not made up of years but of memorable moments. Thanks for the memories." I have to say I have a million awesome memories and have enjoyed directing the choir immensely. The musicals have been a great creative outlet for me. I have enjoyed all the different groups of kids over the years. I will miss it very much. Thanks again!

For the glory of God Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, "Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?" Actually, who are we not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

serve those in need.serve those in need.serve those in need.serve those in need.

I am writing you this letter at the direction of Zion’s Church Council. At the time that Pastor Folkerd’s retirement was announced we pledged to you

that we would work very hard at keeping you informed as we planned for his replacement (in Septem-ber of 2007).

First, let me thank many of you who have recently shared with council members your ideas and con-cerns. We had a meeting on May 16 where we tried to share with one another all the many ideas you have directed to council members. Two things we have decided as a council are:

1) We need to go slow in developing our future plans for Pastor John’s replacement. 2) We would like to put in place a couple of ways that congregational members can formally direct their ideas to council members.

We are planning two means for each of you to communicate your thoughts to us. Let me describe them to you.

We will be asking people to write or e-mail your ideas directly to any council member. Forms

and addresses will be provided at a later date. Each of you will be offered a phone or personal interview with a council member to be done in

June, watch for a special mailing to set up these interviews.

We know there are a lot of ideas out there. We want to hear all of them. Each comment will be consid-ered as the church council determines which option to pursue.

On another matter several people have volunteered to coordinate the farewell festivities for Pastor John and Judy. If you are interested in helping please call Diane in the church office to let her know of your interest.

We look forward to you being involved in providing the church council with your ideas. Watch for a spe-cial mailing within the next couple of weeks.

Sincerely,

Chris Swaggert Council President
