SCHOOL SUPPORT SERVICES help to ensure that each student’s day goes as smoothly as possible.

School Registry staff ensures that there are qualified substitutes in classrooms. Day after day, the well trained transportation staff provides a quality ride to school for all students. Our campuses are well maintained by the Facilities Department, and Health and Safety technicians ensure the safety of students and staff.

Other school support services include Technology Services, Print Centers, Records Management and Communications, a department responsible for media relations, publications and the Rockland BOCES website.

Each of these services enable BOCES to remain a strong link with the county school districts and each of our community partners.

New York State School Boards Association 2015 Annual Convention & Expo (NYC)

Activities and programs offered through the FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER (FRC) are key to maintaining the connections between families and the school community.

Family Fun Nights are just one way that the FRC actively engages families in the healthy development of their children. Typically more than 100 Hilltop and district-based students and their families participate in this monthly activity.

Other FRC programs and services include workshops on promoting literacy at home, stress management, and drug and alcohol prevention.

CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS provide outstanding workforce training in vital professions throughout Rockland County. Year after year, CTE students say the benefits of being a Rockland BOCES CTE “completer” are immeasurable.

Class sizes are small; the teaching staff is dedicated and accomplished; there are responsive and engaged student support services, and the classrooms and shops are state-of-the-art.

A high percentage of CTE completers start college with as many as 11 college credits. Students in the Communications Academy, Constructions Trades Academy, Culinary Arts, and Medical Careers Academy are able to earn industry certifications upon passing standardized industry tests—a real advantage in today’s job market.

Internships and community work based projects are an integral piece of a Rockland BOCES career education.

HUDSON VALLEY P-TECH students expect to complete this six-year program with several items crossed off their to-do lists:

They will be high school graduates; they will have simultaneously earned an Associate’s degree in a STEM area; they will have benefited from mentorships, and they will be first in line for an entry-level position with a business that has signed on as a P-TECH partner.

In the inaugural year of the program, students participated in several community-based, hands-on projects, including building a sensory garden with Kaplan students and observing the installation of solar panels at a capped landfill, a field trip made possible by the collaboration between the Town of Clarkstown, and a nationally recognized P-TECH business partner.

BERC, the hub of the ADULT EDUCATION DIVISION, is the epitome of BOCES being rooted in the community.

From the more than 3,000 adults who are learning the English language to those working toward earning their high school equivalency to those who are trying to determine their career path, programs and services offered through the Adult Education Division provide pathways to better futures for adult learners.

Among programs provided to young adults in the community is the ROCKLAND COUNTY CAREER CENTER, launched in collaboration with RCC and the county, which offers a variety of career services.

THE CENTER FOR SAFE AND HEALTHY YOUTH, a partnership among county agencies, offers a collaborative response to issues affecting the local young adults and is also housed at BERC. Opened in Spring 2015, the center has already served several dozen families.

The benefits of being a career education student at Rockland BOCES are many.

Through SKILLSUSA, students put their wits and skills to the test in challenging competitions ranging from job interviews, to medical math, to crime scene investigations.

Over the past several years, the number of students participating in SkillsUSA has grown, as has the number of medals earned by Rockland competitors.

The NATIONAL TECHNICAL HONOR SOCIETY recognizes the achievement of leading career and technical education students, provides scholarships and cultivates excellence in a highly competitive, skilled workforce.

In 2015, more than 50 students were inducted into the society and a Medical and Nursing Fundamentals student was awarded a $1,000 NTHS scholarship.

INSTRUCTIONAL SERVICES are designed to support, augment and inspire education throughout the county’s schools.

From direct instruction and staff development programs, to the coordination of the History Day competition and the annual Rockland Read In, Rockland BOCES provides a wide range of services, support and training, including workshops for leaders so that they can be kept up to date on the all aspects of education landscape.

The most popular offerings are those that focus on the latest technologies that support the education process. Workshop attendees are encouraged to become collaborative in their approach to teaching, and alternative approaches on how technology can be aligned with curriculum and instructions are presented.

MOVING UP, COMPLETING, EARNING CERTIFICATION or a LICENSE, GRADUATING: These phrases are significant at BOCES, not just in June, but all year long.

Each year, an increased number of our elementary students are able to return to their home school district, equipped to succeed in both the academic and social environment.

Students who complete career education programs enter either the work force or post-secondary programs armed with hands-on experience that is second to none. An ever-growing number of special needs students in BOCES secondary programs are graduating with Regents diplomas, and plans to pursue post-secondary education.

PROGRAMS & SERVICESRooted in the Community

1. ROCKLAND BOCES WEST NYACK CAMPUSThe Parrott Road campus is home to Career and Technical Education programs, the BOCES Conference Center, the Practical Nursing Program, the Jesse J. Kaplan School, the Kaplan Career Development Center, IDT and CBI Tech.

Administrative and support services offices on campus include: Facilities; Health, Safety and Security; Transportation; Human Resources; Communications; Business; Technology Services; the Instructional Services and Professional Development Division; and, the Student Services Division. Central Administration offices include those of the District Superintendent, Chief Operating Officer/Deputy Superintendent, Assistant Superintendents and the District Clerk.

2. HILLTOP SCHOOL Students in grades K-8 benefit from a program focused not only on academics, but also on students’ social and emotional achievements. The site also houses the Family Resource Center, West Street Child Care and the Mental Health Association of Westchester.

3. BOCES EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE CENTER (BERC)

This building is home to River View High School, a program that provides alternative instructional strategies and intensive support in a traditional high school setting.

A majority of Adult and Continuing Education programs are also offered in this building, known as “old Nyack High School.” Programs include adult literacy, ESL programs and career training.

A satellite location of the Family Resource Center (FRC) is housed at BERC as well. The center is a welcoming place within the BOCES community for families to come together for fellowship, support and fun.

A component of the Rockland County Career Center (formerly Tomorrow’s Workplace) is also located on the lower level of this building. The program provides training, education and employment opportunities for in- and- out- of- school youth in the county.

At the Center for Safe and Healthy Youth, as staff representing several county agencies work to identify and coordinate services needed by county youth and their families.

4. TAPPAN ZEE EDUCATION CENTER The former Tappan Zee Elementary School, is now home to Hudson Valley P-TECH, an integrated, six-year program providing

high school, college and career training so that students graduate with an Associate’s degree in a STEM discipline.

The building also houses three CABAS classes and the Rockland Teachers’ Center.

DISTRICT-BASED AND COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAMS With more than 20 different district-based sites throughout the county, Rockland BOCES programs for students

of all ages are never far away.

Project SEARCH, a work-based learning program for students with disabilities, is a collaboration with Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, ACCES-VR and the Rockland County Association for Learning Disabilities.
