Rocks come in 3 different forms: sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic. The type of rock depends on the way they were made. The way rocks are formed go in a cycle called the rock cycle.

ROCK CYCLE

Erosion and transport; is the process where soil and rock particles are worn away and moved by gravity, wind, water or ice. Weathering; the break down of rocks into smaller pieces. Deposition; is when sediments are carried by wind, water or ice. Sediments can be transported as pebbles, sand, mud or salt dissolved in water which are later deposited into the sea and later forms sand. Burial & compaction; when layers pile up, the sediments under are buried sometimes by 100s of metres of sediments. Metamorphism; When rocks are altered because of heat or pressure that change their appearance completely. Uplift; causes rock to form hills and mountains, if it didn’t happen erosion and weathering would have reduced. Rocks formed beneath the sea form the tops of mountains. Melting; when plates move apart hot rocks of the Earths mantle layer get closer to the surface and melt forming magma.

Igneous rocks consist of Basalt, pumus and granite. igneous rocks are formed when the lava in a volcano erupts then cools down. The slower it takes for the igneous rock to cool the bigger the crystals grow as it solidifies. Most igneous rocks are formed under ground. The speed the rock cools also determines the type of rock it forms.

Did you know igneous rocks have no gaps

Sedimentary rocks form under the sea from the shells and coral of dead fish. When Water enters a gap it splits the rock and it continues to happen till the rock breaks into pieces.

When the rock travels to the sea bed it becomes compressed by other rocks on top and becomes sand or sedimentary rocks. Examples of sedimentary rocks are: fossils, sandstone and limestone.

Metamorphic means changed, before a metamorphic rock becomes metamorphic it first starts as an igneous or sedimentary rock. Pressure in the Earths crust and heat can cause the rock to change forms.

Gneiss and schist are metamorphic both rocks.

Did you know metamorphic rocks are used to make coffee tables andStatues.
