A Note From The Editors
It’s late Winter coming into early Spring and there are signs of
flowers coming out everywhere. Bulbs are coming up , trees are in
blossom and we’ve had plenty of rain. It’s time for the body to
wake up too. Get out there and join the walkers, start doing more
in the garden (there are plenty of weeds to pull up). Get moving.
Go to Tai chi or Chi Ball, or just take the dog for a walk. Enjoy the
mild weather and be happy.

ROKEWOOD MEN’S SHED
Rokewood Men’s Shed meet weekly on Tuesday’s from
10am – 4pm.
It is a great opportunity to meet and chat over a “cuppa” and/or to work
on projects in the company of other men. Work can vary from the con-
struction of items such as small toys, garden pot hangers, coat hangers to
larger items such as small tables, raised garden beds, sandpit and commu-
nity notice board.
Assisting in the Community Health Veggie Garden is another aspect of
Men’s Shed work.
The shed is facilitated by Hesse Rural Health Service and is located at the
back of the Rokewood Community Health Centre in Rokewood. Hesse Rural
Health Service is a community based, non-profit organisation and have
made the shed available and accessible to all men in Rokewood and sur-
rounding communities.
The primary focus of the shed is the provision of a safe, friendly, inclusive
environment where men can meet, talk and work on projects at their own
pace and in the company of other men, as well as contributing to the wider
community.

ficer) – 0437 085 496

BAD BOY
By Frank Gartlan
Bad Boy Ziggy and his band called Zok
Played a kind of Rock that was meant to shock.
They played with zest and very little talent
Doing things on stage that were far from gallant.
They smashed up guitars and kicked in the lights
Insulting the fans and starting lots of fights.
The band kept on rocking, adding to the buzz
The there were sirens and in came the “Fuzz”.
Brandishing batons they charged into the blue
The staff and the bouncers joined in too.
The joint was jumping in this free for all
With all these people just having a ball.
The cops were winning, in an arresting style
Marching out prisoners in single file.
All went well till some fans in a rage
Hotted things up by burning the stage
The place burnt down with the crowd looking on
And they never found the culprits ‘cos they were gone.
For a moral to this story I suppose it can be said
That life is much safer if you stay home in bed.
But to try something different go and join the flock
And see Bad Boy Ziggy and his band called ZOK!

MY STORY
By Heather Buttler
As a child I grew up in Rokewood Junction, the eldest of three
girls.
As children we spent a lot of time on our bikes, exploring under
the railway line, in the culverts looking for birds’ nests, climbing
trees and eating the gum, fishing with Dad, cooking with Mum and
playing in our cubby house.
As Mum was one of fourteen we always had lots of cousins to play
with. I had a wonderful childhood which I treasure to this day.
My parents had orchards and ran Merino sheep’ I remember
walking into the packing shed and the small of the apples, peach-
es, pears, plums and apricots being delicious.. I sometimes sized
the apples to be sent to Ballarat and around the local area.
I attended Illabrook State School which was a small school. Our
teacher was Mr. Colin Albon. I went on to attend High School in
Ballarat which was a big shock, coming from a small rural school.
I played hockey and my favourite subjects were cookery and sew-
ing.
After High School I got a job at Thomas Jewelers as a sign writer.
I then got a teller position at the Commercial Bank in Rokewood,
which is now the Hesse Rural Health Centre.
I married Laurence Buttler and we had four children. We ran a
farm at Corindhap for forty two years, before we retired into
Rokewood seven years ago.
I spend my time in the garden, volunteering at the Rokewood So-
cial Support Group, The Breaky Club and Farm Walks. I also at-
tend the Craft Group, am President of the Newsletter and Ceme-
tery Committees.
Best of all I get more time now to spend with our nine grand chil-
dren, grandson-in-law and out gorgeous great granddaughter.

MEDIA RELEASE
Having a say about litter and illegal dumping in our region Grampians Central West Waste and Resource Recovery Group is currently preparing a regional litter plan for the Grampians Central West region. The community are invited to participate in a survey that seeks to find out people’s views, concerns and priorities about litter and illegal dumping across the region. ‘We have done a lot of work to identify a range of problematic areas across the region including the Western Highway, wayside stops, parks and recreation areas and bushland,’ explains La Vergne Lehmann, Executive Officer, Grampians Central West WRRG, ‘But we also know that the community and community groups need to have a say in how we look to tackle the problem of litter and illegal dumping in the region. The results of the survey will help in the development of a Regional Litter and Illegal Dumping Plan that will include a range of actions to tackle the top five identified priorities in the region. People will have until midnight on Monday 5 August to complete the online survey. The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete, is confidential and anonymous and
individual responses will be collated and analysed as group data. As an incentive,
participants can provide their email address (which is kept separate to the survey
responses) to enter a draw to win one of four $50 gift cards. The survey can be found at
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/regionallitterplan
The Grampians Central West region covers 12 council areas including Moorabool, Hepburn, Ballarat, Central Goldfields, Pyrenees, Ararat, Golden Plains, Northern Grampians, Horsham, Hindmarsh, Yarriambiack and West Wimmera. Residents from all these council areas are invited to participate.
‘I strongly encourage Grampians Central West residents to complete the survey and share their thoughts on areas such as litter hotspots, how illegal dumping may have impacted on them, the ease at which littering and illegal dumping can be reported and any ideas they may have on litter prevention.’ Says La Vergne, ‘We are also keen to understand some of the great volunteer work that already happens in cleaning up litter and how that can be better supported.’
The results of the survey will be shared with stakeholders across the region as the regional plan is developed over the next 2 months.
More information on the development of the Regional Litter and Illegal Dumping Plan can
be found at www.recyclingrevolution.com.au/regionallitterplan.
Funding to develop the regional plan is provided by the Victorian Government. The plan and action plan will be used to apply for external funding as it becomes available.

NAIDOC WEEK
At the beginning of NAIDOC week a few members of the Rokewood commu-
nity went to the flag raising ceremony at BADAC in Ballarat. This was fol-
lowed by a long trek to the cemetery where, by the side of King Billy’s
[Mullawallah’s] grave, a smoking ceremony was held which weall participated
in, as Peter Lovett played the didgeridoo. This was followed by the reading of
a very moving poem. An Elder person laid a wreath at the grave side and we
all returned to BADAC for Soup, sandwiches and cup cakes iced with black,
red and yellow decorations. There was also a huge slice in the shape of a
platypus covered in chocolate icing. It was a very interesting and enjoyable
morning that we were privileged to participate in. We also listened to a
speech about a Treaty with Victoria Aboriginals and the Victorian Govern-
ment. Awards were presented to various members of the aboriginal commu-
nity.
On the following Wednesday there was an open day at the show grounds
where there were displays of music, dancing weaving and basketmaking
along with lots of market stalls and information about various service availa-
ble to the community. A great day was held to celebrate National Aborigines
and slanders Day Observance Committee.
Local community Groups Last month, 4 members of the Rokewood walking group took some “Blessing
Bags” to Uniting Care for the homeless and needy.. This was followed by cof-
fee and completing the Heritage walk along Lydiard Street. Very interesting
and a good work out. On returning to the town centre awe had lunch at Kid-
dlety’s café in the Art Gallery.
*********************************************
Leigh Seniors had a fish and chip lunch at their last get together, which was
enjoyed by about 12 members. This was followed by a demonstration of a
sheep collection and some facts and figures about sheep in general. New
members always welcome.
