WhichmeantbackthenthatsomeofthepatchescouldtechnicallybetransferredfromJDintoSuperJVsynthesizers.UnfortunatelywhatSuperJVseriesmissedwastheeffectssectionfromtheJD,andthusmostofthepatcheswereatotalmiss.(Notice:Wellthisisjusthalfofthetruth,theotherhalfisadifferentgainstructure,filterdynamicrangeand44kHzwaveformsvs32kHzROM,butletspretendforamomentwehavenoideaaboutthis.Ifyourecuriousaboutdetails,gotoourUltimateRolandJDJVFAQarticle).Anyway,theprocessofJDmigrationcontinuedwithXVseries,tothepointthatallof108JDwaveformswerefinallyavailableintheXVsynthsseemslike7aremissingbutaremorelikelyrenamed.

Butthatsnotall.WhatwouldbeaJDwithoutitsspecialmultieffectprocessor.ThatswhyRolandimplementedJDsEffectprocessorAintoXV.Inotherwords,yougotaJDsynthhiddeninsideyourXVsynth,andyoucanfinallystartconvertingfavoriteJDpatches.Therearesomedifferencesinthefilter,butmoreonthatlater.Ishouldjuststatethatthe44.1kreferencedsamplespointstomodelsXV5080andXV5050.Icannotguaranteethatmodel3080contains44.1kplaybackengineatall,neitherthesamplesinthatformatithasbeenreportedthemachineis32k.Icanhoweverguaranteethanin5080/5050waveformsfromtheJD800areinoriginal44.1kformat.

JD800multieffectgroupAWiththeXVsynthesizer,RolandalsobroughtusbackthefamousJD800multieffectfromitssectionAblock(note:theJDhastwoeffectsections).OnXVseriesitisavailableasMFXnumber75:JDMULTI.JustlikeontheJD800,itallowsdistortion,phaser,spectrumandenhancereffectstobeconnectedinseriesinanydesiredorder.ItfeaturesexactlythesamesettingsasavailableonJD800.Hereisabriefexplanationforeachoneofthem.

1.Distortion



1.DistortionThefirsteffectinthechainisobviousastandarddistortion.Thiseffectisusefulinsituationswhenyouwishtoaddsomedrivetosolosordosomenastyclippingeffectsdependingonthesounddesignapplication.Thereareseventypesofdistortionavailable:

1.MELLOWDRIVE:Asoft,mellowdistortionsomewhatdarksounding.2.OVERDRIVE:Theclassicsoundofanoverdriventubeamp.3.CRYDRIVE:Distortionwithahighfrequencyboost.4.MELLOWDIST:Soundslikethedistortionyoudgetfromareallybigamp.5.LIGHTDIST:Adistortionwithanintense,brilliantfeel.6.FATDIST:Boostedlowsandhighsgivesthisoneathick,fatsound.7.FUZZDIST:LikeFATDIST,butwithevenmoredistortion.

2.PhaserIntypicalphaser,modulationeffectiscreatedbymixingoriginalsoundwithaphaseshiftedone.Resultisaswirlingeffectandisbestsuitedforbackingsoundssuchasstringsorelectricpianos.Phaserwillbemosteffectiveonsoundsrichwithharmonics,suchassaworpulsewaves.Thereforeitwouldbebettertoinsertthephaserafterthedistortionorspectrum.Forthebestresults,youshouldusecenterfrequencyataround1kHz.

3.SpectrumSpectrumisaneffectthatmodifiessoundbyboostingorcuttingspecifiedfrequencyareas,resultingindifferenttonecolors.Thiseffectmightlooksimilartoanequalizer.However,thefrequencyofeachbandhasbeensetattheoptimallocationforaddingadistinctivecharactertothesound.Ratherthancorrectingthesound,spectrumallowsyoutoaggressivelymodifythetonalcharacter.



Spectrumwillbebestheardonspectralrichsoundssuchaswhitenoise.There,thechangewillbemostevident.Formostexpressiveresultusenarrowbandwidth(setitto5)andtrysettingallbandstomaxgain(positiveornegative).Whenusingwidebandwidthsettings(setto1)soundbecomeslessdistinctive,anditstartstosoundlikeanordinaryEQ.

4.EnhancerEnhancerisasortofauralexcitertypeofeffect.Canbeeffectiveforsharpeningupthevocaltypesofpatches,flutes,guitars,etc.Itwillreallyhelptheinstrument(patch)standoutinthemix.Itsfunctionistogeneratenewovertonesoutofthefundamentalones.Withsensitivityyoucansetthedepthofenhancereffect.Whilewiththemixparameteryouarespecifyingthemixtureoforiginalsoundandthenewlycreatedsoundovertones.

EffectssetuponXVImagebelowshowsustherealJD800effectprocessorrouting.Asyoucansee,effectsgroupAisconnectedinbothseriesandparalleltogroupB.SamethingcanbedoneinXV.TheonlydifferenceisthatonXVthereisnoeffectsgroupB,butinsteadthereisseparatechorusandreverb/delay.Sincetheycanbeconfiguredinseriesorparallel,youcanthinkofthemasgroupBwithonlydifferencethatyoucanhaveeitherdelayorreverb,butnotbothlikeontheJD.
