AUTHOR'S NOTE.

A T the special request of the Prisoners of War Committee, a portrait of myself,

taken in May 19 19, forms the frontispiece to the accompanying Record.

I agreed to the wishes of the Committee somewhat reluctantly, not

desiring such prominence.

In keeping the Roll of Honour of all the Macduff boys, so far as they

were known to me, I hoped to preserve in some permanent fashion the recollec-

tion of what they had so nobly undertaken and so successfully carried through.

INTRODUCTION.

IT may be somewhat difficult to determine the exact date when MrDickson commenced to compile the Roll of Honour for his native town.

On Sunday forenoon, 2nd August 1914, orders were received at

Macduff, in common with all ports along the coast, for Naval Reserve men to

mobilise. The purposeful look on the men's faces as they left that afternoon

for the Naval Base brought to one's thoughts the ancient motto of Scotland;

"Nemo me impune lacessit," but no such words were heard. In the crowd

of spectators the words, "It is war," might have been whispered. The speaker

feared, yet knew not, what these portentous words foreboded.

After the Army Reserve, the local company of Territorials was called

up. The Territorials to a man were proud to voluntarily subscribe for Imperial

service. These formed part of the renowned Sixth Battalion Gordon High-

landers, and were amongst the first Territorials to land in France.

When Lord Kitchener made his famous appeal, "Your King and

Country need you," the men of Macduff were behind no other place in offering

themselves for service. Then the ministers of the churches bethought them of

getting the names of those of their membership who had voluntarily offered

their services for God, King and Country. In this matter Mr Dickson was

able to help, for he had ahead}' commenced a Roll of Honour for the community.

Why he commenced this Record may easily be guessed: Though his

talk was sometimes on a level with the first report the country had of the

Battle of Jutland, which made a great achievement appear almost like a defeat,

Mr Dickson's actions belied such talk. He was daily, most assiduously building

up his Roll of Honour, so that he might be able, when Victory was attained

and Peace proclaimed, to present, whole and complete, a record of which the

town might be justly proud. We say he built it up. This he did by adding

name to name, and list to list, and finally nailing the lists to the wall of his

shop. Thus, in what we may term a Work of Faith and Labour of Love, he-

expressed the firm conviction, as well as the hope, of final triumph in the

cause of Righteousness.

To the casual reader the Record may present little beyond a list of

names, but to a native of Macduff, whether at home or abroad, each name

Page 20: Roll of honour 1914-1919 for the town and quoad sacra ......rollofhonour 19144919forthetownandqjjoad sacra • parish • of • macduff, withactiveservicelist, listsofpris^ onersofwar

Xll. INTRODUCTION.

stands out resplendent as that of one who bore an active part in the shaping

of the destiny of the Empire for future generations.

By those who still remain in the old town, each individual name is

valued—valued for the sacrifices so nobly made, and the hardships so cheerfully

endured.

We can well imagine the Roll of Honour will be carefully perused and

cherished with as much pride and admiration in the Australian bush as on the

Canadian prairie, in the American city as on the African veldt, in the plantations

of India and China as on the vast estates of South America. Wherever Macduff

men and women may be found playing an honourable part—in the ancient seats

of learning or in the busy centres of commerce, in the crowded city or in the

lonely outposts of Empire, there the Record will be honoured, and the deeds of

the lads from the old home will be had in everlasting remembrance.

Unconsciously, though none the less effectively, Mr Dickson has re-

vealed the golden chain that unites the far sundered sons of the town. Might

w: venture to suggest that he has done even more than this? His Record mayhelp to perpetuate the genuine feeling of goodwill and unity that prompted the

daughter-colonies to rally round the flag of the mother-country in the hour of

need. The Colours, emblematic of loyalty; of purity and innocence; of unity,

brotherhood and love, met a response from the youth of the nation unequalled

in the history of the world. The sons of the town, as the Crusaders of old,

failed not to read the true significance of the flag—the symbol of a Great Empire.

This war, now happily ended, has been in so many respects unprece-

dented that to make comparisons with the past is almost valueless. It is

difficult to arrive at definite figures regarding the number of men from the town

who served in previous campaigns. Yet it may be of interest to note, that

though history does not show what contributions were paid by the lands of Down(Macduff) to the war chest of King Robert the Bruce in his great struggle for

the independence of Scotland, it is on record that there accrued to his son, King

David II., the sum of ten pounds sterling and four chalders of corn annually

from the lands of the thanage of Glendowachie or Down. During the next reign

we read these grants were used expressly to defray the expenses of " services

paid and to be paid to the King." Thus early our northern burgh helped : with

the sinews of war when the Scots, led by the dauntless Douglases, proved at

Otterbourne their independence and liberty.

Passing on to comparatively more modern times we find the name of

the town changed from Down (sometimes Doun) to Macduff, when the charter

of erection was signed by King George III. on 31st January 1783. At this time

Britain was at war with France, Spain and Holland. In a Memorial from the

Page 21: Roll of honour 1914-1919 for the town and quoad sacra ......rollofhonour 19144919forthetownandqjjoad sacra • parish • of • macduff, withactiveservicelist, listsofpris^ onersofwar

INTRODUCTION. Xlll.

Burgh to Earl Fife we read that this "nursery for seamen" furnished for this

war twenty-six j^oung men.

From time to time in Navy and Army registers the names of Macduff

men appear, and the nearest to a complete record we find in the list of eighteen

names of those who fought for their Queen in the South African War of

1899-1900.

The historian who may yet arise to write the past history of the town

will find in Mr Dickson's work much valuable material and 1 an accuracy of detail

that would greatly help to elucidate what might otherwise remain for ever

obscure.

In the forenoon of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the year

1918, at eleven o'clock, French time, the Armistice suspending hostilities between

the belligerent nations in the Great War came into force. The clock in the

church tower, professing to tell Greenwich time, proclaimed the hour fifteen

minutes past ten. It was then that Admiralty vessels in the harbour, having

1 eceived a wireless message, apprised the community of the cessation of hos-

tilities. Whistles were blown and flags flown, and soon the town was en fete.

The older people whose hearts were too full to give adequate expression to their

pent-up feelings of relief and joy—superlative joy—declared, "It is Peace!"

With the advent of that historic hour, the careful, conscientious work

of Mr Dickson was nearing completion. With great gratitude he duly noted the

prisoners of war as " Returned home," while much to the regret of the com-

munity he had to add still more names to the list of those who had died in the

service of the country. Of these we must ever say, " Greater love hath no manthan this."

It is difficult for those who know Mr Dickson to think of any one in

the community who could have managed this piece of important work so well.

Certainly no one could have done it better. It must have been with thankfulness

and with pride that he added to such a memorable Roll the word Finis.
