Year 4/5 have begun their unit on the Murray River by tracing the

history of European Settlement and that of the local indigenous

Australians. The tasks involved were examining the importance of

the paddle steamers, farming and irrigation and the indigenous

understandings of the river’s origins and their role in its care over

thousands of years.

In particular, the class listened to the indigenous story of “How the

Murray River Was Made”. Their task was to retell it using the

correct sequence of events, convert notes into sentences and

illustrating it. The following retell was written by Hannah Alway.

Well what an eventful few days we have had. Last year we worried

about dust on the ground this year the Campdraft eating area

became a fast flowing creek. However three inches of rain in one

day could not dampen our spirits. Sadly the Campdraft had to be

cancelled on the Saturday morning but not before the competitors

purchased and enjoyed beautifully home cooked meals, a hearty

breakfast and enough fresh baking to last the week.

A very big thank you to all of you that supported the event,

without your delicious food we would not have been able to pull

through as well as we have. The quantity and quality of the Friday

night meals and home baking was exceptional with the school fast

gaining a reputation for their outstanding cooking. The wonderful

donations of food and goods from our school community is so very

much appreciated and it is so wonderful to see such a small school

come together to put on such a great event despite the trying

conditions.

A special thank you to all the families that stayed on in the wet

weather and worked the canteen while standing in ankle deep

water, you are all truly remarkable and it was great to be able to

share a laugh and bond together in all kinds of weather.

Our school thanks everyone for their contributions, donations,

equipment and time; it truly is an honour to be part of this great

school community.

Many thanks,

Mel Hamblin

Tips for Parents to

Manage Technology’s Dark Side

Part 3

A range of resources were also available at the workshops. Some websites were also

given which parents may find useful.

The Sarina and District School’s Chaplaincy Committee has purchased some

resources for parents to borrow. Our school has been provided with a copy of Brad’s

book “The Dark Side of Technology” as well as a DVD titled “Parenting Digital

Children”. The DVD was recorded in Mackay and shows a presentation Brad and Sgt

Dalton gave to parents of Mackay Christian College. Parents may find the Q&A part

of the DVD particularly useful. These resources are available for loan from our

chaplain or through the school office.

The website www.thinkuknow.org.au is a great resource. Parents are able to access

information on topics such as:

- KIK Messenger (a free smartphone messenger application that allows users

to send texts, pictures, videos and sketches);

- Managing Your Reputation (about losing control over who sees things sent

digitally via a mobile phone or the internet);

- Ask.fm (a social Q&A website, launched in Latvia, which promotes itself as

offering the ability to ask anonymous questions to an individual’s ‘profile’);

- Cyber Safety (ten top tips for young people);

- Cyberbullying (repeated use of the internet, mobile phones and other

technologies to bully and humiliate others);

- Instagram (a photo-sharing app that allows users to take photos, apply a filter

and share contents with either users or the general public);

- Snapchat (a free application which allows users to send images (‘snaps”) to

each other for up to 10 seconds, with an added caption and which then

‘dissolve’).

The booklet, “Who’s chatting to your kids?” has been produced by the Queensland

Police and provides parents with practical information about internet safety, including

the technology used by children and how you can reduce the risk of your child

becoming a victim. A copy of the booklet, and a useful family internet agreement, are

available for download at www.police.qld.gov.au

Sarina State High School is actively seeking enrolment from students in year 6 and 7, so that they can accurately

prepare for the transition program and additional responsibilities caused by the ‘Y7 into High School’ move. To

date, only 7 students in 6/7 have enrolled. Your cooperation regarding an early enrolment would be much appreciated.
