Funeral ministry

Are you free during the weekday mornings or Saturdays to participate in a very rewarding new ministry in our church? Father is in need of a few dedicated people to join our Funeral Ministry. What this entails is: preparing the church for funerals, serving as sacristan and as altar servers and putting things away after the funeral. You do not have to commit to every funeral but only be available when additional members are needed. If you might be interested in helping out in this ministry, please either call or email Father ST.

“NO MORE SECOND COLLECTIONS”

Since I have been here in Newton for the past nine months, I have realized that there are a lot of second collections. However, when they are totaled on Monday mornings, they are no more than if there would have been just one collection.

Therefore, after consulting with the Trustees and the entire Finance Council, it has been decided that starting in May we will be sending out a letter to each registered parish family explaining that Saint Joseph Parish will be requesting from each family a one time (yearly) contribution of one hundred dol-lars ($100). If this is successful, almost all diocesan second collections will come to an end. Two enve-lopes will be provided in the event that you would like to break up your donation. Of course, if you are able to make a larger donation, that certainly will be greatly appreciated.

The only collections that will remain are the following:

1. Diocesan Assessment (Project Faith)

2. Mission Cooperative (taken up in August)

3. Retired Religious (taken up in December)

Please note that the Bishop’s Annual Appeal (which takes place in September) will continue to come directly from the diocese.

The following second collections will no longer be taken up:

a) February: The Beacon

b) February: Church in Central and Eastern Europe

c) April: Campaign for Human Development

d) May: Peter’s Pence/Holy Father

e) June: South American & Latin American Missions/Catholic Relief Services

f) June: Father’s Day Collection: Seminarian Education

g) July: Catholic Communications/Catholic University/Black & Indian Missions

h) October: World Mission Sunday

i) November: Catholic Home Missions

This idea is presented in order to not continue constantly asking for money at church in the second col-lections. I am more than confidant that your weekly contributions will continue as we are able to ac-complish more and more through your increased generosity and commitment to your parish church.

Thank you for all your support and positive approach to this new idea,

Father ST
