About The Types of
Catholic Wedding Ceremonies
There are two forms of Catholic wedding
Liturgy:
The Wedding or Nuptial Mass:
Often referred to as a “full Mass,” it is the
celebration of the Mass with the wedding
ceremony inserted in the middle of the
Liturgy. It presupposes both parties are
practicing Catholics and receiving Holy
Communion after a proper spiritual prepa-
ration.
The Wedding Ceremony:
This has all the elements of the above
(music, readings, vows, etc.) but without
the celebration of Mass. This form is suit-
able for general congregations and is of
shorter duration than the above.
PLEASE NOTE: Nuptial Masses are
NOT celebrated on Sundays. The ONLY
exception is when a visiting priest is
invited by the family, approved by the
Pastor and is willing to offer a Nuptial
Mass on Sunday.

Why does Mary have so many feast
days and names?
Christians first began celebrating feast
days in honor of Mary, the Mother of
Jesus, in the fifth century. That cele-
bration (originally called the Feast of
the Dormition and now known by
Roman Catholics as the Solemnity of
the Assumption) was celebrated on
August 15. Very soon, however, other
special days dedicated to Mary began
to appear in Jerusalem, Rome, and
other major cities of the Christian
world. These days of feasting
became important parts of the life of
the community. But, more importantly,
each of these unique celebrations
became an opportunity to focus on a
different facet of the Christian faith, as
believers focused their attention on specific events or
mysteries of the lives of Mary and her Son.
Over the centuries, some of these celebrations
became universal (such as the Assumption on August
15, the Immaculate Conception on December 8, and the
Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God on January 1). Other
celebrations were more closely tied to certain religious
orders (such as the Carmelites celebration of “Our Lady
of Mount Carmel” on July 16 or the Servite Friars feast
of the “Seven Sorrows of Mary,” which is now celebrated
as the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows on September
15). In more recent times, Marian apparitions (like
Guadalupe, Lourdes, and Fatima) have inspired special
liturgical celebrations. Pope Francis has added two new
celebrations of Mary to the Church’s
calendar: The
Memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church
(on the Monday after Pentecost) and
the Commemoration of Our Lady of
Loreto (on December 10). The various
titles of Mary (like those we find in the
Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary) help
us to reflect on different aspects of
Mary’s faith and the ways that the Holy
Spirit is at work in her and through her,
especially as the Mother of Jesus.
In the end, whatever the event
or mystery being celebrated in a particu-
lar liturgy or the title of Mary being used,
we are invited to always see Mary in connection with the
saving work of her Son. She is, of course, a patroness
and protector for every Christian, but she is also a model
of discipleship and contemplation: “Having entered
deeply into the history of salvation, Mary, in a way,
unites in her person and re-echoes the most important
doctrines of the faith: and when she is the subject of
preaching and worship she prompts the faithful to come
to her Son, to his sacrifice and to the love of the Father”
(Lumen Gentium, 65).

For all those who work and live from the sea, among them sailors, fishermen and their families.
The Apostleship of Prayer is a worldwide association of Catholics and
other Christians who strive to make their ordinary, everyday lives apostolic-
ally effective. Through the Apostleship of Prayer, the Pope gives his monthly
prayer intentions to the entire Church. For this reason, the Apostleship came
to be known as "the Pope's own prayer group."

My Dear Parishioners,
I am sincerely and deeply grateful to you for the enormous
amount of food that you have donated these last several
months. It has been a tremendous help to so many people.
In fact, the number of people that have requested food during these months has increased 10-fold.
Fortunately, because of you these families have received adequate food for themselves and their
children. Some of them even cried when they received the food as they were so touched by your
kindness. I always tell them to pray for the donors.
May God bless your great generosity and kindness to others. Sr. Kay McCarthy

August 9 - Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In this Gospel, Jesus immediately stretched out his hand and caught
Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Please help the Society of St. Vincent de Paul bring respite and hope
to the elderly who are not able to find relief from the summer heat,
and you will bring them faith and hope!”

Christian Persecution - Renounce Your Faith or No Food!
China: The Chinese Communist Party is forcing Christians to renounce their
beliefs and replace religious symbols and imagery of Jesus with portraits of
Chairman Mao and President Xi Jinping or be cut off from welfare payments, according to a recent
U.S. State Department publication. "The government is trying to eliminate our belief and wants to
become God instead of Jesus."
(1)
"All impoverished religious households can't receive money
from the state for nothing - they must obey the Communist Party for the money they receive," said a
communist official.
(2)
Kenya: A pastor in northeastern Kenya reports Christians are being denied food
relief during the COVID-19 crisis. "The sad state of Christians in Kenya is being unpublished ...
Many Christians are suffering at the hands of the local chiefs who oversee the fair distribution of the
government's relief foodQ”
(3)
Pakistan: Christian leaders are reporting Christians were denied government food
aid amid the coronavirus crisis. "There was an announcement made through a mosque's loud-
speaker ... inviting citizens to collect government's announced foodstuffs," a local pastor re-
ported. "When Christians reached the distribution point and presented their national identity cards,
they were asked to get out of line claiming the foodstuff was only for Muslim citizens."
(4)
The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom condemned the rejection of Christians
and Hindus for food aid. "These actions are simply reprehensible," said the Commissioner. "As
COVID-19 continues to spread, vulnerable communities within Pakistan are fighting hungerQ
(5)
"The inconvenient truth," reported British foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt in 2019, is "that the over-
whelming majority (80%) of persecuted believers are Christians. In the Middle East the population
of Christians used to be about 20%; now it's 5%... We've all been asleep on the watch when it
comes to the persecution of Christians."

making decisions for their state and for the country. Do not be silent. Please contact one or more

St. Clare of Assisi (July 16, 1194 – August 11, 1253)
is an Italian saint and one of the first followers of St. Francis of
Assisi. As a child, Clare was devoted to prayer. She heard Francis
preach during a Lenten service and asked him to help her live after the
manner of the Gospel. She left the comfort and wealth of her father’s
household that Palm Sunday and proceeded to the chapel of the
Porziuncula to meet Francis. Francis placed Clare in the convent of
the Benedictine nuns of San Paulo. Other women joined her and they
became known as the “Poor Ladies of San Damiano” or “Poor Clares.”
Clare founded the Order of Poor Ladies – a monastic religious order for
women in the Franciscan tradition. They lived a simple life of
poverty, austerity and seclusion from the world.
Clare was canonized on September 26, 1255.
Use your IRA for your Gift Now and/or for your Estate Gift!
If you would like to make a gift now using your IRA and if:
You are at least 70 1/2 years old and don't exceed your maximum of $100,000 per year in
qualified charitable distributions, you will not have to report your distribution as income. It
will be free of federal and New York State income tax, and it will count toward your required
minimum distribution (RMD). The best way to start is with your IRA custodian. Tell them
you want to make a "qualified charitable distribution." In most cases, you will only have to
fill out a simple form.
Very important! Your gift must go directly from your IRA to the Parish. If you receive the money
first, you’ll be taxed on it. If you make an Estate gift, you can make your Parish a beneficiary of
your IRA and your loved ones will not have to pay income tax on their proceeds.
