Introduction Is a cultural movement that stressed emotion, imagination,
and individualism. Freedom of expression emerged duringthe romantic period.
It was an artistic, literary, and intellectual movement thatoriginated in Europe toward the end of the 18th centuryand in most areas was at its peak in the approximate periodfrom 1800 to 1840.
The period saw the emergence and awaking to the rights ofthe people.
There are momentous progress in science like the dawn ofphotography, food canning, the railway and steamboat,steel production, the discoveries affected the economic,political , social, and cultural order of the times.

Century music Reflected the social, cultural, and economic conditions of
the times. Because the importance of the individual wasgiven emphasis, self expression and individuality of the
musical styles brought about by the above conditionsemerged.
An individuals expression of his sentiments of the social,cultural, and economic events of the period reflected his
music. There was music for the poor and for the working class.
Through their music that characterized fantasy,subjectivity, and love of nature.

Characteristics of Romantic Music Composers manifested individualism in their diversity of
musical style.
Emotional expressions and personal feelings are
emphasized in the songs and operas. Nationalism in music which originated in folk music,
emerged as a result of the conditions of the times.
There was an expansion of instrumental music for the
piano and orchestra. Individualism was also manifested in the performance of
the virtuoso-composer in piano and violin.
There was improvement of piano music.

Musical Forms of the Romantic
PeriodA. Vocal Forms.
1. Recitative and aria- the basso continuo accompaniment
was not employed in the romantic period. Thedifferentiation between recitative and aria becamegradually less clear until the two emerged as one in the unending melody of the music dramas.
2. opera it is drama set to music. Performers acting anddancing in costumes add to colorful sceneries.

B. Instrumental Form Sonata- one orchestral instrument of the early romantic
period are similar to classical models. Chamber music- Programmatic or nationalistic elements
sometimes appear in chamber music composition of theromantic period. Concerto- the romantic concerto is free form. It is more
demanding virtuoso writing for the solo instrument, and itis more symphonic in character.
Ballet a form of musical theater in which a story is toldthrough dancing, pantomime, and scenic effects. Suite a free succession of movements sometimes drawn
from ballets originally composed around a central story oridea.
