CUTEST PETS…P3VOLUNTEERS…P6

A warm and fuzzy love have they for each other, butneither wants to die over it. They hug, they kiss, they snuggleand murmur sweet purr-nothings while cleaning each othersears. But alas, lacking self control each of them found a secondlove. Neither wants to give up their first love. They think theycan have a triangular affair and maintain their primaryrelationship. Others suspected their affections were beingshared with a second love, but it wasn’t until the weightyevidence told on them. We found the name of their secondlove: Tay Stee Food. Romeo and Juliet were unabashed whenconfronted with the evidence—each was caught with 22-1/2pounds of evidence.

Knowing their addiction to Food, caring relativesintervened and had them committed to the H’s Fat Farm.They’ve been there two weeks. Reduced and monitoredportions of a high quality Innova cat food are fed three timesdaily. Juliet inhales her food and promptly heads for Romeo’s

bowl. This bad habit has caused her to loose her girlish figurelong ago. Monitored, is just that. Mrs. H. of the H’s Fat Farmpets, talks, and brushes while monitoring the pair during mealtime. Romeo, a large boned, handsome tabby and white dudeneeds to loose about eight pounds. Juliet, a striking tabbycalico, needs to shed about 10 pounds.

From a personality view point, you couldn’t ask for a nicerpair. Each has a noticeable purr as soon as you touch them.They both knead you, ankle rub and head butt. Juliet lets youhold her and will stay in your lap for a while if you put herthere. Romeo jumps into your lap when you sit and doesn’twant to leave. They both like playing with toys and loungingin the window. When feeling secure and comfy, they both flipover and wait for gentle tummy rubs. This charming pair willbe looking for a forever home, but not until released from H’s Fat Farm. Stay tuned on their progress in the next issue ofFurry Footnotes.

2006 Walk to Unite Pets & PeopleThe 2006 Walk to Unite Pets & People was a very successful event by any

measure. We had beautiful weather with sunshine and warm temperatures. We enjoyeda wonderful turnout in terms of walk participants and quite a number of sponsor boothsand extra activities. We selected the date this year to be later in May than usual inhopes of better weather and also to avoid interference with Mothers Day and theFishing Opener (two very important holidays). It seems the strategy worked.Personally, I always enjoy spending time with our supporters: people who have adoptedanimals, people who help us through donations of their time and money, and peoplewho help to match the right animal with the family that is searching for the perfectpet. I want to thank all of you that helped to make this such a wonderful and funevent. I also want to thank our Walk 2006 committee for their tireless efforts thatmade this so enjoyable and successful. I should also mention that, although some itemsare still trickling in, this year’s Walk shows an increase of about 15% in income overlast year, which will be very helpful in our mission to help the animals.

CSHS Annual MeetingIn March we held our annual public meeting at the Chaska Recreation Center. We

enjoyed a strong turnout from the public for the second year in a row and had theopportunity to describe the activities of Carver-Scott Humane Society for the prioryear. The meeting culminated with an awards ceremony for the volunteers and donorsthat are really the keystone of CSHS. New this year was recognition for members ofthe CSHS Giving Clubs, recognizing those who have donated more than $300. Youwill see photos of our volunteer winners on page six in this newsletter.

Board Member ChangesThe Annual Meeting was also the night of the final Board Meeting for two of our

CSHS Board Members. Bev Fiedler decided to take a break after five years of service tothe organization, and Julie Pecoraro resigned after two and a half years of service. Wethank them both for their support of CSHS and their selfless contributions during theirtenure. Bev remains active with CSHS in other capacities.

We also have two new members of the CSHS Board of Directors. Shelley Strainjoined the Board in March and has already been very active in several capacitiesincluding the Walk to Unite Pets & People. Our other new member is Deb Raisanen,who officially joined the Board in May.

SummerI hope you and your family and pets have a wonderful summer full of lots of fun and

outdoor activities. As always, be sure to keep plenty of fresh water available for your petsand make sure they have shade to lie in. And, of course, if you have a friend or neighborwho is looking for a pet, please encourage them to consider a gently used dog, cat, orother animal from CSHS or from another organization. They’ll be glad they did, andthey’ll be giving a deserving animal a second chance.

This year’s Walk to Unite Pets &People was a huge success! People camefrom all over the Twin Cities Metro toenjoy a day withtheir pets at LionsPark in Chaska. Theweather was cool andcomfortable for thewalkers and therewere plenty ofactivities for all toenjoy. There werechildren’s games, theGirl Scouts’ versionof the traditional“cake walk”, a Purr-fect Price Sale, aMicrochip Clinic, aNail Trimmer, anOff-Leash Park Spokesperson, a K-9Officer and his partner, a Silent Auction,other animal-related booths, free food,contests, prizes and more! If you’ve ever seen the musical Cats,you know what I mean when I say thatmy newly, adopted cat JC would be agreat cat character in the musical. He is awonderful roommate. In the morningswhen my alarm goes off, he beginstalking at me toget me up forwork. He greetsme at the doorwhen I returnhome and talks,talks, and talksabout his day.He really likesthe “butterfly”on a fishingpole, and healso bats arounda green feltcatnip mouse and charges at a ball withbells inside. My favorite time is in theevenings when he lays on my chest whileI’m watching TV—he purrs loudly as Ipet him or brush him. He hasn’t chosenone favorite spot yet. I think he rules myapartment! Thanks so much for theexperience of adopting JC, a beautiful orange tabby.

Dear CSHS,

About 8 years ago my daughters and I were fostering felines for you. We had a number of kittens that passedthrough our home. Then, one day a blackmale named Coal came to visit. He wasextremely shy with people but took a realliking to one of our other cats, Finch.Not many people came to see Coal andwhen they did, he would hide. He wouldbe taken to the different adoption daysand would be passed over for the cute,younger kittens. One adoption day heeven ran away and hid. It took a couplehours to get him back into the carrier!

Coal was with us much longer thanany other guys we fostered. Then, oneday my daughter suggested we adopt him.

She thought we should keep him becauseno one else wanted him, and Finch washis best buddy. So, we did. He and Finchcontinued to be best friends.

Then, one day a 4 month old puppycame to live with us. Journey and Coalalso became great friends. When Coaland Journey were in the chair togetheryou couldn’t tell where one started andthe other one began.

In February, Coal started to distancehimself from the rest of the family andwas sleeping more. He also stoppedtelling me he was hungry by knockingthings off my dresser in the morning!

I took him to the clinic where I workand we ran some bloodwork. He was

diagnosed with Immune MediatedHemolytic Anemia. He received a bloodtransfusion from a wonderful boy namedPumba and because of that and othermedications we kept him going foranother two weeks. On February 17th,surrounded by the people who loved himhe went to the Rainbow Bridge. He willwait there for the rest of his family.

Coal was a special cat who came intoour lives as a stray, but who became amuch loved member of our family. He ismissed every day.
