    04. Reporting journey

    05. The ET advantage

IntroductionThe purpose of this report is to explain what I learned during my internship period with ET

NOW in the Editorial department. The report focuses primarily on the assignments handled

working environment, successes and short comings that I as an intern encountered while

handling various tasks assigned to me by the supervisor.

The report consists of seven chapters. Each chapter outlines the specific background of the

organization and the work profile handled specifically. The last chapter elucidates my learning

from all the tasks assigned and from the tenure of internship.

    9

The report is a precise read of the eight week long tenure of the internship. In rather simpler

words, this report is a brief look into what made the internship an invaluable experience.

    Introduction of ET NOW

ET Now is a business news channel in India, owned and operated by the Times Group. The news

channel has a strategic partnership with Reuters, a subsidiary of Thomson Reuters. It is produced

in collaboration with The Economic Times, a leading financial daily in India. The Economic

Times, started in 1961, is India's largest and among the worlds top 3 English Business dailies

with a daily circulation of over 620,000 copies. The Economic Times is published

simultaneously from 10 Metropolitan Cities-Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata,

Lucknow, Hyderabad, Ahemedabad, Chandigarh & Pune. ETNOW is free to air channel its

available all on all cable operators and CAS network in India and its not available on DTH

network in India. They are working on it and by the year end it will available on DTH network in

    India.

    T h e l a u n ch o f E c o n o m i c s T im e s N O W ( E T N O W )in a n e w e ra in m o d e rn w o r ld o fc o m m u n i c a t i o n

Starting a business channel at the time of a global recession was big risk and pressure of

recession was being felt in India and it was a very risky move. Many industry observer were

    unsure about ET NOW, given that it was the most recent participant in the business news space;

a segment already in a mess with three existing players. Besides, one of these channels, CNBC-

    10

  • 8/8/2019 Ronak Nangalia Project

    11/39

TV18, was an undisputed market leader and had been on air for a decade and NDTV Profit &

    UTVBloomberg.

A year later, the numbers tell an entirely different story. ET NOW, the business news channel

from the Times Group, has relegate two of the players that enjoyed a head-start to a distant

number three and four position, and is snapping at the heels of the market leader.

    (March data)

In six metros, ET NOW is a very strong number two with a 33% market share compared to the

8% share it enjoyed in the week of its launch. Over the same period, the market share of CNBC-

TV18 has slipped in these six metros from 70% to 40%. In third place is NDTV Profit with 16%,

and Bloomberg UTV is in fourth place with 9%.

In Delhi and the southern market (Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai), ET Now leads with 38%

share, while CNBC and NDTV Profit each have 31% share. ET NOW enjoys a 52% market

share in the capital and has been the leader for the last four weeks in Delhi.

And in the crme de la crme of audiences targeted by advertisers, ET NOW is a clear winner.

SEC A, male viewers over 25 years of age constitute the most sought after demographic for

advertisers on business channels. ET NOW is the preferred channel of this target audience with a

45% market share compared to the 25% for by CNBC-TV18.

It is far ahead of the combined market share of 31% enjoyed by the No 3 and No 4 players in this

    space.

The fee l i ng :ET Now has two types of programming. The morning time band is related to market news and

expert views, buy, sell and hold tips so that the viewer gets the most relevant stocks information.

The evening band comprises analysis of the days trades, relevant global cues, interviews with

    11

  • 8/8/2019 Ronak Nangalia Project

    12/39

the movers and shakers of Indian and world business, and lighter feature stories which interest

    the business community.

    Inside ET NOW

Heres an insight on how ET NOW works and is an exhaustive account of the working practices

    of the organization:

    N e w s g a t h e r in g :Unlike general news channels, business news channels have their major news gathering done

through their research team and not just reporters. News supports like Bloomberg, Reuters and

News Wire 18 play a major role to break story. ET Nows advantage from the print sibling

comes handy more often than not. There are a set of stories which come in from the desk which

assign reporters to cover them. But only stories worth the deal are allowed to be broken in during

the market hours. A through search by researchers into print and personal contacts helps decidethe news that need to be tracked day in and out.

R e s e a r c h :The day begins with checking what they missed out in the night and the work in office begins

with continues to ensure no news goes a miss. Forward planning through the list of prospects for

the day such as announcement of US unemployment figures or a new IPO opening needs to

always be inscribed into the research team. The team has specialized researchers focusing on

different business news category like Pharmaceutical stocks, FMCG stocks, Metal stocks, US

markets, Asian markets, and others. The researchers are the early birds into the office, gearing up

to first deliver the early morning global cues and stay there until after the market bell in the

    12

  • 8/8/2019 Ronak Nangalia Project

    13/39

evening. The researchers watch the back for anchors and ensure they give the most reliable

    support.

ET Now's buy, sell and hold recommendations come from the biggest market voices, apart from

ET and ET Now's strong team of 40 research analysts

Product ion :The most noise making department in the news room works to ensure all the content generated

by the researchers and the reporters minus any glitches on the screen. From Astons to the

promos, to packaging and to the graphics to making the headlines; the production team looks to

keep things slick. The production quality of the feature programming at ET NOW in the evening

band of programming is known for being spectacularly done. The most young and vibrant team

at ET NOW work for production to try to bring near about perfection on screen. The team also

has an acute eye for details and goes out of their way to offer help and suggestions to other

    departments.

Edi tor ia l :Once the news editor has allocated reporters stories he then has to sell his ideas to the

producers of different news programmers each of which may have his or her own view about

how to run the story. Suggestions are pooled and discussed with editor-in-chief acting as a

chairman and referee and checking that the stories have the impact to make it to the market hours

    or the evening slot.

Market hours are treated like precious time, meant only for hard core market news and expert

views, buy, sell and hold tips so that the viewer gets the most relevant stocks information. The

editorial gets in full throttle to get the most important market voices and the most superior

    management person on the channel.

The editorial team at ET NOW boasts of the bigwigs of the financial and market news segment.

They expertise they bring along is also supported with the subordinates who are always egging

for the competitive edge. The editorial not only overlooks content but also keeps most of the

    13

  • 8/8/2019 Ronak Nangalia Project

    14/39

concentration on keeping the ET NOW signature intact. Being an business news channel ET

NOW editorial team also works in co-ordinance with the Research and Marketing team to

maintain a clear advantage of breaking the biggest stories and delivering the most accurate

    market advice.

Reporters and anchors also form a part of the editorial team. ET NOW has a force of more than

300 of reporters and anchors. The focus of the channel, especially in the morning time band, is

more stocks oriented to allow the viewer to take informed decisions and help his money grow.

    T h e E T N O W N e w s r o o m :The included newsroom is more than a buzz word for the channel. The degree of mixing was

remarkable with ET reporters on reporting of news of the day. If an ET reporter comes on air

many times in a day on a developing story, s/he will be squeezed for time for the print duties and

also to do the actual, time consuming reporting. If anybody can pull off an included TV-print

newsroom, however, it will be ET, with more reporters than its competitors by a huge margin.

And the only things most of ET NOWs competitors worry about, it is thisthe combined might

of ET and ET NOW, in news gathering.

    Intern at ET NOW

Heres a list of the major responsibilities in my profile:

    T i c k e r N e w sA news ticker is a small screen space on news television networks dedicated to presenting

headlines and breaking stories. The ticker desk works as a part of the editorial on intricate things

like the: ticker slug, ticker description, stock flips and also the stack. ET NOW uses a two and

one band ticker for news and advertisement. It has a scroll for the market rates for stocks to be

    14

  • 8/8/2019 Ronak Nangalia Project

    15/39

flashed. The ticker uses a flash technique for the news title while the news scrolls in white text

    in blue background.

On an average day, my shifts at ticker desk were from for the duration of before the market

opening and hence, the most buzz hours of the channel. Heres an understanding of my

    responsibilities:

The Stack (the vertical right hand corner display on screen) need to be updated on the indices:

    1. Nifty

    2. S&P

    3. Nasdaq

    4. CAC 40

    5. Dow Jones

    6. Sensex

    7. FTSE

    8. DAX

    9. Nymex Crude

    10. Comex Gold

    11. MCX

    12. NCDEX

The Flips stock recommendations on air between 9:00 9:15 am included an approximated of 30or more stock recommendations prepared according to the views of the brokerage houses

    reports.

In the pre-market hours, the ticker had to be updated with Ticker titles and ticker description on:

    1. Fund Flows

    15

  • 8/8/2019 Ronak Nangalia Project

    16/39

    2. Bulk Deals

    3. Commodity

    4. Asian Markets

    5. US Markets & ADRs

    6. Futures & Options

    7. Stocks in News from Economic Times, Business Standard, Financial

    Express & Business Line

Since, my shift began at the crack of dawn, global market cues were of the major dominance in

    the Ticker news.

I was also entitled to co-ordinate with the Guest Desk and prepare the Coming Up graphics on

    the ticker in the channel.

Post the markets opening, the Ticker needs a lot more swiftness and detail as it highlights

Breaking News coming from different news wires and the sense of urgency is higher to deal

with competition. The Ticker also highlights Guest views that make sense to the business news

followers and could help them with market views.

    R e s e a r c h N O WC o n t e n t & I n fo r m a t i o n Ma p p i n g :Information Mapping is a research-based approach for creating structured documents and

communications that are clear, concise, and user-focused. This is done by analyzing, organizing,

and presenting information based on the kind of needs and the purpose of the information. The

    16

  • 8/8/2019 Ronak Nangalia Project

    17/39

method is both subject-matter and media independent. The concept of information Mapping has

close ties to the fields of: information visualization, information architecture, graphic design,

    information design, and data analysis.

The content mapping and analysis over the 8 weeks involved the differentverticals:

    1. Data analysis of market hours (Recommendations)

    2. Comparative analysis of ET NOW with CNBC TV18

    3. Daily analysis of shows (ET NOW & CNBC 2-4 pm on weekdays)

    4. Guest mapping

1 . D ata m ap p in g & an a ly s isIt is important to map competition not only to analyze the content but to understand the

perspective they cover news from most of the mapping was done to track the market hours in

order to understand the difference between the reporting and keep a tab on the new developments

of the other channels. It helps to understand the use of headlines, teasers and verbal hooks to get

people interested in the stories. It is a determiner of which channel finds that point of contact

with the viewer and if it all it manages to succeed to overpower the real trademark of ET Now.

It is a complete greedy business. The need is to bring out the positives and

the negatives on the competitors and on the channel to realize the potential

for growth. The analysis ranged from following aspects is who likes to breaks

the story first, which high-profile reporter was sent, what kind of coverage

was made to provide distinctiveness and also the kind of management

people who made it to the competitors if not us. The suggestions were

mostly build from the comparative analysis and it helped making editorial as

Graph ic & v i sua l i za t ion an a lys i sEvery business news channel speaks of content but the visual packaging also

plays an important role. As there is no great help coming from the type of

visuals unlike general news channels, it is important to understand what

more could be done to get people view. This analysis brought

recommendations based on how to make the fast programming bright and to

    The Repo r t ing exped i t ion :

Among the numbers of reporting assignments I have been sent on, most

were crucial press conferences and a number of them were important

interview links. They were mostly not live reporting, as a news channel

    hardly requires them.

The reporting also involved a great deal of help from the Production team to

get the best of people to be interviewed. The press conferences opened

horizons over how same content could be covered in several different ways.

The major concentration on the news reporting was not just thinking,

Whats the story? And how do I cover it and be the first one to get it.

During covering launch parties and success parties, it is of vital importance

to look for well known faces and record their opinion on the event. However

during professional interview detailed research is required to be done in

order to be well informed about the person.

First press release was Piple live music launch in which we were able to

meet star and crew of the movie and their experience at the time of

    shoot of the movie.

Second press release was from the corporate side I attendance Eureka

Forbes product launch. The launched the of new water purifier which is

a non electric based is was loving experience enter acting with the

    corporate

Third was working with ET NOW anchor at the time of the recording the

show and to inter act with host and what kind of questions to ask and

as per their sector related and reporter have to be well prepared at the

time of interview with their questions and knowledge about the sector.

The reporting assignments did not need piece-to-cameras as they were

mostly done by the anchors in the next days market hour news, which is

    also termed as cheat-lives.

The ET advantageHeres a rundown of the valuable learning:

    1. The Research, Editorial, Production and Marketing department of a

business news channel work in collaboration with each other. It is only

through a proper integration in the news room that the channel can

    function smoothly.

    9

  • 8/8/2019 Ronak Nangalia Project

    35/39

    2. There is a considerable need for multi-tasking at every position in most

    departments.

    3. Being a TV reporter is seldom as glamorous as some might believe.

Newspaper journalists can draw on their imaginations to describe a

scene, but TV reporters are tied to the camera, and that can mean

spending a whole day for one vital picture.

    4. Business news channels pay equal or more if not less importance to

    illustrations/graphics.

    5. Using the Library for stock footages is very important in case of

business news to give the whole backgrounder.

    6. Editors and producers need to have a clear idea of the days coverage

and prime stories by the morning which forms the threshing floor for

    ideas.

    7. Producers play a keep role in keeping the channels trademark alive

while packaging. The approach learnt is to keep it serious yet feel like

    popular.

    8. It is always important to know the watch list stories irrespective of the

wok one does. If its ticker, one would know you got to keep the eyes on

the wires to break it first or if you are an anchor you need to have it at

the back of your mind. One cannot take their eyes of the ball.

    10

  • 8/8/2019 Ronak Nangalia Project

    36/39

    9. For every reporter and anchor appearing on camera there are a large

number working behind the scenes. And it is here that the most

number of opportunities lie for new comers to learn the basics and

    thereby promotions are swift.

10.After witnessing live-reporting, it is understood that they are very guts

cracking. It is important to speak slowly and keep calm to help sound

authoritative. One cannot raise the pitch of the voice. Specially, for

business news it is crucial to keep facts and figures on paper.

    11. Major source for business news are the subscribed news wires

but the differentiation can be achieved through the channels own

    group of reporters on field.

    12. Newspapers provide a major source of news to be on the watch

list, especially for business news channels.

    13. There is no copyright on ideas and business news channels often

feed on one another for their leads and inspiration.

    14. One needs to have wide background knowledge, rather than

narrow specialization, and you need to keep it up to date.

    15. The basics of business news is to decarbonizes, to declichefy, to make

everything clear, simple and concise; whether its the ticker news one

fits in 50 characters or the reporting or even the explanation the

anchor provides on the market sense derived from the experts.

    11

  • 8/8/2019 Ronak Nangalia Project

    37/39

    16. The Ticker is an important element in competing with the rival

channels. It is the first source of breaking authentic news to the

screens of viewers. The style of writing of the Ticker is very crisp and

abbreviated yet simplified, similar to headlines in print.

17.However, important pace is one has to wait for the reparation of

    confirmation of a news piece.

    18. An anchor needs to have believability and credibility by

understanding the news in and out. And one has to develop the ability

to listen and speak at the same time.

    19. The major challenge in a business news channel is to understand

the business jargons and be able to grasp the functioning of market in

a way that makes news as well as affects the business news viewer.

    20. Most business news channels have two types of programming:

The morning time band is related to market news and expert views,

buy, sell and hold tips so that the viewer gets the most relevant stocks

information. The evening band comprises analysis of the days trades,

relevant global cues, interviews with the movers and shakers of Indian

and world business, and lighter feature stories which interest the

    business community.

    12

  • 8/8/2019 Ronak Nangalia Project

    38/39

    21. The Features are treated as fillers in a business news channel

and the focus is on Markets alone. Financial and economic news are

given priority over light business news.

    22. The focus of the business channel and its viewer ship is directly

proportional to the one with the providing most relevant market news,

stock tips and game changing information to the viewer so that he or

she was able to make informed judgments on investments and grow

    his/her money.
