8:45am-10:00amFire Resistance: Lessons from the 2017 Northern California Fires and Elsewhere

Philip Dregger, RRC, PE – Technical Roof Services, a Salas O’Brien CompanyPhil Dregger is a Professional Engineer, Registered Roof Consultant, and a recent recipient of the William C Cullen Award (ASTM D08). Phil works for Technical Roof Services, a Salas O'Brien Company, in Concord CA and

has spent more than 30 years investigating, designing, and providing expert testimony regarding virtually all types of roof and waterproofing systems. He has special expertise in wind/hurricane damage, building code compliance, and condensation.

New roof coverings are required to pass certain tests for fire resistance; as they should be.  Investigations following the 2017 Northern Califor-nia fires, however, reminded us that damage to roof coverings during fires often depends on conditions not addressed by standard tests of fire resistance.  And, it turns out that something as simple as adding insulation as part of a reroof project can compromise the fire-resistance of a rated roof/ceiling assembly.

10:15am-11:30amLow-Slope Roofing: How to Reduce Labor Expense without Compromising Quality

Abby Feinstein – CertainTeedAbby is responsible for marketing, R&D, and market analysis for low slope roofing at CertainTeed. Prior to joining CertainTeed, Abby helped start several business-es in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sec-tors. She previously managed both sales and marketing

divisions in the building performance contractor sector before starting up and operating her own home performance consulting business.

Contractors specializing in low-slope roofing face the dual challenge of fewer available skilled workers and keeping up with the demands of delivering quality, watertight roof systems. Understanding, controlling and reducing labor costs can mean the difference between profitability and business failure. This course will examine a five-year, low-slope roofing study commissioned by CertainTeed and conducted by Trinity | ERD, a respected national roofing and waterproofing consulting firm. The study followed the installation of 45 different low-slope roofs, with six different covers in 18 configurations in locations across the United States to objectively measure labor efficiencies across common single-ply and multi-layer roof coverings. Our findings will help roofing contractors understand the impact that product selection, climate, roof design, and project/crew management have on labor efficiency, effective bidding, and profitable project management.

Even when the intent is there, most roofers do not make the progress they could when trying to grow their service departments because their approach is fundamentally flawed. This presentation will focus on highlighting the true challenges a company faces, not those they think they face, in starting or growing a true service department.

Mr. Reicher is a licensed Structural Engi-neer in the State of Illinois with considerable experience in forensic investigation, evaluation, and repair design of existing building enclosures; and building enclosure

consulting and commissioning for new construction projects. He is also a Registered Exterior Wall Consultant (REWC), Registered Exterior Wall Observer (REWO), Certified Construction Specifier (CCS), and Certified Construction Contract Administrator (CCCA).

The in situ performance of building enclosures can remain inferior to intended criteria due to inadequate detailing and incomplete speci-fications during the design phase, variation of installation methods

and imperfect jobsite conditions, insufficient communication and collaboration between project team members, and unreal-istic construction scheduling,

among other issues. Although project documents often clearly

define performance requirements for individual building enclosure components, considerations of interface details often remain under-developed. These interface details often cannot be fully designed until subcontractors are selected, manufacturers and products are evaluated, and shop drawings are prepared. Coordination is typically left to the general contractor with respect to sequencing issues, means and methods, material compatibility concerns, etc. The continued and accelerating use of delegated design makes timing of coordination tasks more difficult. Ample opportunities exist to improve construction processes and validation procedures by effectively coordinating and collaborating throughout the construction project life cycle.

9:30am–10:45amSeminar: Interface-Understanding the Impact of Transitions on Façade Performance

Alex Korter - CO ArchitectsSince graduating from the Glasgow School of Art, Mr. Korter’s architectural experience in both Europe and the United States encompasses the design and techni-cal coordination of academic, healthcare, civic, and commercial projects varying in size and complexity. Alex

holds special interest in developing innovative exterior envelope systems and making environmental, economic, social and functional sustainable design a fundamental part of projects in order to ensure their success.

Kevin Kavanagh - VidarisMr. Kavanagh is an architect specializing in the design and construction of building envelopes. As Director, Southwest Region, Mr. Kavanagh leads Vidaris’ growth opportunities for the West Coast, with an initial focus on California. Kevin has experience working across

numerous project types including healthcare, residential, commercial and institutional. His extensive experience includes a variety of building envelope assemblies for new construction, landmark restoration, reclad/overclad and specialty structures.

While typical conditions of exterior enclosure systems are generally well marketed, documented, tested and assembled, atypical condi-tions, inherent to every project, are often overlooked, underdeveloped and the cause of weaknesses in performance.

This presentation will explore the challenges on air and water tight-ness, thermal continuity, constructability and accountability caused by changes in geometry, materials, systems and gaps in scope alloca-tion using completed interface examples. Using at-grade, in-plane, overhead and parapet transition details as a baseline, the importance of careful interface detailing for high-performance envelopes and the responsibility of the architect in this process will be discussed.

defeat a proposed code amendment that would have only benefited a few roofing manufacturers. It’s amazing how much you learn when you go on a quest for facts about the issue at hand. In our case, a group of manufacturers, working through the Global Cool Cities Alliance, ap-plied to the State of Oregon Building Codes Agency to make cool roofs mandatory on air-conditioned buildings in Western Oregon.

What worked in our opposition of this proposed amendment was the diversity and breadth of participants. We had taxpayers; a spokesman from OCSA (The Oregon Confederation of School Administrators) who spoke on behalf of school associations for business managers, facilities managers and school board members; National, Western, and Portland Roofers Associations; two multiproduct roofing manufacturers; and the Portland Chapter of the RCI all assembled to fight the change. We were able to fight poorly implemented computer simulations with in-field experience and speculation with facts. The result was multiple advocate groups working for the benefit of all.

2:30pm-3:45pmSeminar: Parapet Predicaments and Roof Edge Conundrums

Jennifer Keegan - GAF Materials CorpMs. Keegan is the Director of Building & Roofing Science for GAF. This position is focused on the relationships be-tween individual roofing materials and the overall roof system and building envelope performance. Jennifer has over 20 years of experience as a building enclosure

consultant specializing in assessment, design and remediation of building enclosure systems.

Tracy Myers - GAF Materials CorpMs. Myers is a Building & Roofing Science Architect for GAF, with over 25 years of broad experience in architec-tural design, building envelope forensic investigation, peer review and quality assurance, building codes, and roofing design and investigation. She has provided

sworn testimony related to architectural issues including standard of care, roofing, waterproofing and general construction.

We will review a variety of building types to discuss the continuity of detailing required to manage moisture, air, vapor and thermal perfor-mance, as well as wind resistance requirements at the critical wall-to-roof interface. We will discuss code requirements and how to achieve compliance through design. This session will provide guidelines to successfully navigate these often competing interests and provide strategies for achievable performance through design and specification without compromising the aesthetics with distracting details over the edge of the roof. We will review detail examples that gracefully and not so gracefully blend together form and function at various roof to wall interfaces, reviewing variations to account for constructability, various trades, and construction phase sequencing.

11:00am–12:15pmSeminar: Tying it Together as the GC: Establishing Acceptance Criteria for Design and Installation of Roofing/Waterproofing Systems

Ali Sabbagh - DPR ConstructionsMr. Sabbah brings 20 years of experience as a Super-intendent at DPR Construction. He worked his way up through the ranks as a union rodbuster, establishing a strong foundation for managing the technical and field aspects of construction. He has been instrumental in the

success of DPR’s largest and most complex projects and brings specialized experience in roofing and waterproofing scopes.

Claire Stein - DPR ConstructionsClaire Stein brings 15 years of experience as a Project Manager at DPR Construction. With a background in ar-chitecture and strong technical construction experience, Claire has been instrumental in the success of roofing and waterproofing on projects for DPR in the Bay Area,

including three ground up hospitals. She holds a BA in Architecture from University of California at Berkeley and a MS in Construction Engineering and Management from Stanford University.

Using collaboration tools and processes, DPR Construction and trade partners have established key guidelines for the successful installa-tion of roofing and waterproofing. Setting design acceptance criteria early in preconstruction has helped to identify requirements at design and ultimately at mock up and installation milestones. Establishing defining features of work with all stakeholders helps the team plan and execute the installation. Using BIM, DPR Construction has defined critical areas of coordination, including roofing and flashing, rooftop equipment, and equipment pads. This presentation will give case studies and outline guidelines and technologies DPR uses for successful install of roofing and waterproofing systems.
