Fan perfonnance data This catalog contains fan performance information for the en­tire McQuay rooftop product line.. In order to furnish our customers with as complete information as possible, all of the following features have been incorporated:

1 .. Complete fan curves have been published, from block shutoff to maximum CFM, and zero to maximums static pressures ..

2.. Fan performance tables have been provided allowing easier identification of brake horsepower and RPM values ..

3.. Fan instability regions, maximum cabinet static pressure, and maximum fan RPM lines are clearly indicated .. Max­imum face velocities, minimum heater velocities, and com­pressor operating conditions must still be considered in unit selection.

Complete information of this nature is not generally avail­ble in rooftop manufacturers' catalogs due to lack of space. Our intention is to reduce the work required of contractors and engineers by supplying complete, documented design information ..

A common design problem engineers encounter when work­ing with traditional rooftop products is the lack of fan selec­tion. Generally, one fan is available for each unit size. The single fan is usually selected for approximately 400 CFM/ton and a typical static pressure.. Unfortunately, diversity in building design forces a traditional rooftop unit, if installed, to operate at inefficient or unstable balance points ..

The McQuay rooftop unit goes a step beyond the traditional rooftop and generally offers four to six fans per unit size (two or three fan sizes plus forward curved or airfoil capability) ..

A section on basic fan selection and application has also been included. Forward curved versus airfoil, fan laws, altitude correction, VAV turndown, return air fans and fan surge are a few of the topics covered. A similar section can be found in the McQuay Central Station Air Handler Fan Catalog #520. In addition, examples are provided showing fan selection procedure.

A broad selection is offered on McQuay rooftop units. Multi­ple fan sizes, airfoil or forward curved, and Class II capabili­ty are available on most units. The McQuay rooftop is an ap­plied product, engineered to the job, and this catalog is pro­vided to aid in this type of selection.

In addition, factory installed VAV dampers are offered on for­ward curved fans and inlet vanes on airfoil fans. Also, Class II design is available on most forward curved fans and is stan­dard on all airfoil fans .. Forward curved fans Forward curved fans are those that have the blades inclined in the direction of rotation of the fan wheeL This makes the blade passage velocity additive to the tangential velocity and gives the largest resultant velocity of the various blade types. This concept is illustrated in Figure 1 ..

The high blade passage velocities give the air a kinetic energy that must be converted to potential energy by the hous­ing .. The conversion of a large amount of energy limits the fan efficiency to a level below that of the airfoil fan. The high

blade passage velocity gives this type of fan an advantage of having lower tip speeds and a continually increasing brake horsepower requirement as its volume is increased. A forward curved fan will have 32 to 64 blades resulting in the highest blade passage frequency. A forward curved fan is low in first cost and the low operating speed also means that a smaller shaft and bearings are required. Forward curved fans are the most widely used fans for low pressure applications ..

Airfoil fans have blades inclined opposite to the direction of the rotation of the fan and have blades shaped similar to the wing of an aircraft .. The blade passage velocity opposes the tangential velocity, just the opposite of the forward curved fan. This is illustrated in Figure 3..

This type of fan develops a high portion of its pressure directly so it does not have the high housing conversion losses and can achieve higher efficiencies than the forward curved fan .. The airfoil fan, with its opposing velocities, must run at higher tip speeds to achieve CFM equal to the forward curved fan. The opposing velocities give this type of fan a limiting brake horsepower characteristic .. As the air volume increases, the brake horsepower reaches a peak and then declines .. This self-limiting feature, and the higher efficiency,

are the main desirable features to the airfoil fan .. There are usually 8 to 12 blades in an airfoil fan giving it

a relatively low blade passage frequency .. The airfoil fan is generally a heavy welded assembly with a higher first cost than a forward curved fan. The higher operating speeds and heavier weight result in larger shafts and bearings that also add to the cost. This type of fan is used in the higher pressure applications where the higher efficiencies and the limiting brake horsepower features can give a meaningful savings.

On smaller fan diameters the width of the "teardrop" air­foil blade causes performance penalties since it blocks off airflow .. McQuay's 24" diameter fan is backward curved, not airfoil, to optimize performance. It has identical operating characteristics to an airfoil fan ..

Fan selection considerations System resistance The fan delivers air through the ventilation system of the building .. Every component in the ventilation system (coils, filters, ductwork, diffusers, etc.) has a frictional resistance to the moving air and this resistance is referred to as the static pressure loss .. The total static pressure of this system is the sum of all the resistances the fan must overcome to deliver a given quantity of ai~. For a given system, the following rela­tion exists between system static pressure and CFM:

When a fan is applied to a given ventilation system, it is pro­vided with a particular motor and drive combination which dictates the fan RPM.. The intersection of the system line and the fan RPM line dictates the fan performance .. The balance of a typical fan, motor and drive combination, and ventilation system is shown in Figure 5. Point A would represent the balance point yielding 10,000 CFM at 2" total static pressure ..

Fan laws If the motor and drive combination is changed so that RPM is changed, as shown in Figure 6, while the system remains the same, then the following relations exist. These relations are commonly called "fan laws" and hold true if air compres­sion is neglected. Air compression is insignificant at normal pressures (less than 10" w .. c..) ..

Changes in system pressure If a component of the ventilation system changes, then the component air resistance, as well as total system resistance or static pressure, will also change. A good example of this is failure to replace dirty filters .. Figure 7 shows a theoretical example where dirty filters add approximately 1f2" static pressure at the design CFM ..

EXAMPLE 1: Point 1 indicates the balance point with clean filters. Point 2 indicates the balance point if the RPM is in­creased to account for dirty filters .. However, in real life, RPM will not be changed and the fan will balance at Point 3 with a resulting loss in CFM..

Effect of air density The fan curves published in this catalog show fan perfor­mance at 70°F and sea level. A CFM of air at these condi­tions is referred to as a standard CFM (SCFM) and has a par­ticular density, mass and weight. If air density changes (due to altitude or temperature), obviously the weight of a particular cubic foot of air changes .. Fan performance will also vary with changes in density based upon the following equations:

Consequently, the static pressure and brake horsepower decrease with an increase in air temperature or higher altitude, and increase with a decrease in air temperature or lower altitude.

To determine fan performance at temperatures and altitudes other than standard (70° F, 0 ft. altitude), the static pressure must be adjusted by the density ratio before the fan RPM and BHP re­quirements can be determined from fan perfor­mance curve tables. Density ratios are ex­pressed as temperature and altitude conversion factors in Table 1.

EXAMPLE 2: An air conditioning unit is to deliver 8,500 CFM at 2" total static pressure at 5,500 ft altitude and 70° F. What is the unit performance?

1.. Keeping the CFM constant, correct the static pressure to sea level conditions by dividing by the altitude conversion factor:

2. Enter the fan performance tables at 8,500 CFM and 2.45" static pressure and find the follow­ing performance at sea level:

Fan and motor heat The total electrical energy input to any fan motor is always eventually converted into heat The input energy is con­sumed in two ways: by heat dissipated through the motor frame and by work output.

MOTOR AND DRIVE HEAT- The amount of heat dissipated by the motor is a function of its operating efficiency:

Motor Heat = Input x (1 - Motor Efficiency)

A small amount of the motor work output is dissipated by the drive mechanism, which also results in a heat gain .. Belt drive losses are a function of belt tension and number of belts as well as power transmitted .. Typical belt drive losses are 2% of BHP. This heat must be subtracted from the cooling capaci­ty and added to the heating capacity of a unit with internally mounted motors ..

FAN HEAT GENERATION - All of the power input to a fan results in a heat gain which must be considered as a cooling load .. The amount of heat generated is directly proportional to the fan BHP.

Fan Heat (BTUH) = BHP x 2545

Much of this heat generation occurs within the fan itself. Fans are far from 100% efficient, and the energy losses which oc­cur are converted directly into heat The work done by the fan on the airstream increases the temperature, pressure and velocity of air. The rest of the fan power input turns into a heat gain in the ductwork. As the air travels throughout the building, its energy is deteriorated by friction, resulting in pressure drop ..

CONCLUSION - The sum of the motor, drive and fan heat must be considered heat gain .. Typical fan and motor heat values are given in Figure 9 on the next page.

VAV discharge dampers, forward curved fans Probably the simplest form of fan modulation being used to­day is the practice of riding the fan curve .. What this involves is simply allowing a forward curved fan to rise to the left on its constant RPM line in response to an increase in system static pressure .. There are two methods of increasing system static pressure. One is by simply closing off the variable air volume terminals .. The other is through the use of discharge or inlet dampers.

Discharge dampers are preferred to merely closing off variable air volume terminals since they greatly reduce the possibility of overpressurizing the ductwork and eliminate the potential for noise problems at the space that would occur when the variable air volume terminals begin to close .. As the discharge dampers begin to close, more and more pressure drop is seen across the dampe~. As this static pressure is in­creased, it causes the operating point of the fan to move up­ward to the left along the constant RPM line, thus resulting in a reduction in airflow ..

Because of the characteristics of a forward curved fan, the brake horsepower is reduced significantly as the fan operating point rides up this RPM curve .. Brake horsepower reduction can be read directly off the fan curve for reduced CFM values .. The characteristics of an airfoil fan would allow virtually no BHP savings with discharge dampers.. Excessive duct pressure also would usually result.. For these reasons, airfoil fans are not used with discharge dampers. A forward curved fan produces high velocity airflow and it is recommended that the discharge dampers be located at least three fan diameters downstream of the fan outlet. This allows ample distance for a more even airflow pattern to be created before going through the discharge dampers. Discharge dampers offer good power savings with a fairly wide modulation range, and both low first cost and low maintenance costs.

Discharge damper turndown is very easily calculated. Figure 10 shows a typical example. By riding the RPM line back to the surge area, the minimum recommended CFM is obtained. Discharge dampers have the disadvantage of some horsepower increase at full capacity, along with an increase in sound power level, and sometimes require that smaller, less efficient fans be chosen in order to maximize modulation ..

Inlet guide vanes, airfoil fans One of the most common methods of fan modulation is the use of inlet guide vanes .. Fan volume reduction with inlet vanes is accomplished by pre-spinning the air in the direction of fan rotation. The effect of pre-spinning is seen as a decrease in air delivery, static pressure, and brake horsepowe~. For each position of inlet guide vanes, a new fan curve is created .. Brake horsepower reductions cannot be read directly off the fan curve on inlet vane applications because a new fan curve is generated as the inlet vane closes ..

It is also difficult to estimate turndown capability on inlet vane applications. Any time a VAV system with terminal boxes is controlled by a static pressure sensor, a system resistance curve is developed which passes through the design opera­tion point and a minimum static pressure control point.. This system curve will affect where the fan will cross into the unstable operating range. Figure 11 illustrates inlet vane turn­down and the following equation calculates the minimum CFM.

Inlet guide vanes offer good power savings, wide modula­tion range, and low maintenance. They basically have the same disadvantages as discharge dampers: some brake

horsepower increase at full capacity and some sound power increase ..

Fan operating range The proper fan operating range of a McQuay rooftop is deter­mined by all of the following characteristics .. Each one of these limiting factors must be met for proper and safe performance:

1. Unstable fan operation 2 .. Maximum fan RPM 3. Maximum cabinet and static pressure 4 .. Maximum face velocity (cooling coil is most important) 5 .. Minimum furnace or electric heater velocity 6 .. Turndown capability on VAV applications 7. Compressor operating pressures

Figure 12 graphically illustrates all of these limiting factors except items 6 and 7. The shaded area would indicate the safe operating range .. However, a large portion of this shad­ed area requires inefficient fan operation .. Efficiency is another important selection criteria along with component cost The first line to the right of the unstable line indicates peak static efficiency.

A given system pressure line should intersect a Fan RPM line and provide a unique fan performance .. If this does not occur, if CFM or static pressure fluctuations occur for a given fan and system, then the fan is operating unstably. This will result in excessive vibration along with variations in motor amp draw, excessive wear on the fan components, and excessive noise levels ..

A complete discussion of the causes and severity of fan instability will not be made here .. There may be a lack of con­sensus in the industry on this subject. However, the follow­ing points are generally recognized.

1. Unstable fan operation should be avoided .. 2 .. Twin fans offer the extra risk of "paralleling" if operation

to the left of the hump is required .. Extra care should be taken with these fans ..

3. Fan surging is more noticeable when higher CFM or static pressures are involved .. Airfoil fans will also show a more noticeable surge ..

4 .. On VAV applications, care must be taken that the fan does not turn down into the unstable operating area .. Fan turn­down is discussed in the previous sections ..

All McQuay fan curves show the area where unstable opera­tion can be encountered. This is based upon both theory and test.

Maximum fan RPM The maximum RPM is based on fan, shaft and bearing design .. Essentially, it is the maximum duty the fan com­ponents can safely stand. On most McQuay rooftops, the max­imum RPM corresponds to CFM and total static pressure

beyond the unit limits and is not shown on the curve .. However, there are a few exceptions, and maximum RPM lines are clearly shown on these fan curves ..

Class I forward curved limits are also RPM dependent and are clearly marked on all 802 through 806 cabinet sizes .. All of these units offer Class II forward curved fans for operation at these heavier duties .. The Class II RPM limits are general­ly so high they go off the curve and are not shown .. All airfoil supply fans are Class II fans as standard ..

Maximum cabinet pressure This value is strictly a function of cabinet construction .. The high pressure side of the fan is the critical area. McQuay's double wall construction and quality gasketings, utilizing air pressure differential to generate a positive seal, allow opera­tion in the medium static pressure areas. Check the individual product catalogs for each unit's design features. Cabinet static pressure capabilities are as follows: 1. RDS-7088 - 4 .. 5" total static pressure 2.. RDS-9008 - 6.5" total static pressure 3. RDS/RBS-8008 thru 8088, RPS-018 thru 1008,

RWS/RHS-8008 thru 8088 - 5.5" total static pressure 4. RRS/RSS-018 thru 071 - 55" total static pressure

Maximum face velocities This value is mainly dependent upon the value where water blowoff occurs on the cooling coiL This value is a function of velocity, fin spacing, fin treatment, coil wetness and drain pan length and is established based on all of these parameters .. Since a multitude of coils are offered with each fan, this limitation is NOT on the fan curves. Consult the in­dividual product catalogs on this item..

There are other cabinet components which have velocity limits .. The air pressure drop tables in the product catalogs are the best reference for this value. Excessive noise and filter break-up are two problems which can occur if this value is not watched.

Minimum velocities Failures of furnaces and electric heaters can be disastrous and the manufacturer must provide the safety protection with such components. Electrical wiring and controls are an in­tegral part of this protection.

Catalog 205 (RPS, RWS, RHS, RFS) clearly shows minimum CFM values for each size heater .. Use of variable volume control on these components is not generally recom­mended since minimum velocities must always be maintain­ed while the heater is on .. A morning warm-up control, with full CFM during heat, is not a problem if components are pro­perly selected.

Fan selection The component limitations discussed in the previous section are the most important selection criteria .. They must be met Generally, the tradeoff of fan efficiency versus first cost is the final selection criteria .. Brake horsepower can be read direct­ly from the fan curves or tables. The static efficiency is another important factor in analyzing fan performance .. Static efficiency can be calculated from the following equation:

Static Efficiency = (CFM)(TSP)(.000157) BHP

This equation shows total static pressure in inches of water. An important thing to remember is that fan noise is generally decreased as fan efficiency increases ..

Cabinet losses, supply air fan The RDS-708B and 900B unit sizes are both available with downblast fans. These two units are commonly furnished without discharge plenums, usually on jobs where noise levels are not criticaL For this reason, the discharge plenum losses are not included on the RDS-708B and 900B units .. All other McQuay rooftop fan curves include plenum losses since plenums are required for bottom supply openings ..

All supply fan curves include cabinetry losses but do not include component losses such as coils, filters and dampers .. All component air pressure drops are shown in the product catalogs and must be added to the external static pressure to obtain the fan total static pressure. Optional discharge plenum losses for the RDS-708B and 900B units are in the RDS catalog and also must be added into the total static pressure calculation ..

The RDS/RBS-800B through 808B unit sizes are available in a top horizontal fan discharge arrangement without a plenum .. Plenum losses are figured into these units' supply fan curves but do not exist on this sort of application .. A static regain credit is cataloged in the RDS Catalog #206 .. The static regain factor can be SUBTRACTED from external static pressure when calculating the total static pressure ..

Return air fans Generally, return fans are recommended on economizer ap­plications if remote exhaust is not used .. The importance of the return fan in protecting against overpressurization varies on every job and is affected by the amount of return duct static pressure and the tightness of the building .. Return fans offer far superior performance to exhaust fans in controlling building pressure .. On VAV applications, it is critical to properly control return fan CFM proportionately to the supply fan CFM McQuay's exclusive VANETROL system offers unsurpassed supply and return air fan VAV controL Refer to Catalog #210 for more details on the VANETROL system ..

Cabinet losses, return air fan Return air fan tables and curves include all losses within the rooftop cabinet including gravity relief losses .. The return fan curves do not include economizer damper losses.. The economizer air pressure drop is in the product catalog and should be factored into the supply fan total static pressure capability since on 100% outdoor air situations the return fan would not be able to provide static pressure to overcome the economizer damper losses ..

Sound power level estimating The following method of estimating centrifugal fan sound power level spectrums is taken from the latest ASHRAE sources .. The method does not consider cabinet attenuation, but does provide conservative approximate values upon which to base an acoustical attenuation analysis ..

Sound power levels in decibels re 10-12 watts in each of the eight octave bands may be estimated with the following formula:

dB = Base dB + System dB + Blade Passage Frequency dB + Multi-fan dB + Point of Operation dB

Base dB The base dB is found in Table 3 by entering the octave band and reading the dB in the appropriate row.

System dB The system dB is found in Figure 13 by entering the chart at the flow rate, rising vertically to the pressure of the system and reading the decibels ..

Blade passage frequency dB The blade passage frequency dB is found: 1. For Forward Curved Fan Wheel Units: Add two dB to the

one octave band which contains the frequency equal to the RPM of the fan ..

2.. For Airfoil Fan Wheel Units: Add three dB to the one oc­tave band which contains the frequency equal to the fan RPM divided by 5 ..

Multi-fan dB (Applied on forward curved fan wheel units only.) For Two-Fan Wheel Units: Add three dB to each band.

Plenum attenuation All McQuay applied rooftop products come either as standard with a unit discharge plenum or have a plenum available as an optional feature. These plenums offer an effective sound attenuation of 8 dB per octave band .. This credit should be taken in unit sound estimations ..

If for any reason, a fan is not or cannot be selected optimally, the noise level produced will increase by the value "C" This correction factor should be ap­plied to all octave bands. Note that "C" is based on "% of Peak", not actual efficiency
