March 2018 Roots & Branches Wilderness Ways We’re about a third of the way through this season of Lent. The smudges of ash have been wiped off our foreheads. We’ve felt the first rays of a sunshine that seems to be promising that spring is on the way. We are growing slightly impatient with hopes of flowers soon budding, alleluia choruses, and longer days. And yet, in our liturgical lives, we are still a month away from Easter. Still trudging through the wilderness, still refraining from alleluias in our sanctuary, still repenting, still wandering, still asking questions of ourselves about what it means to follow this Messiah who will soon suffer on a cross. It’s a good time to check-in, to ask ourselves, how are we doing? How are we really doing? When have I felt most at home with myself in this season? And when have I felt moments of consolation and desolation this season? I am not the most directionally savvy person you will meet. There have been a number of times (more than I am willing to admit) when I will go running on trails in the woods without really knowing how far the trail is, where it will come out, or if it is a loop or an out and back. Because of my lack of knowledge about where the trail leads, I often will find myself asking the question, “should I turn back or just keep going?” I know the way back. I’m just not really sure where this trail is going to take me. To keep going or to turn back. That is the question. These are questions of the wilderness. It just seems to me that more times than not, God calls us to keep going – to tread that mysterious path, not knowing where it will lead. It seems that the church – locally and universally – is faced with so many questions about the way forward. The United Methodist Church is currently in a process of figuring out life together, specifically in regards to the LGBTQ community. The Bishop and a team of delegates have traveled to each district to update pastors and lay persons about where we are in the process and to share three models of possible ways forward as a church. You can read more about these models and the process as a whole online (google “Commission on a Way Forward.”) Meanwhile, at a local level, churches are having their own conversations about life together in regards to worship times, church safety, how to be a greater presence in the larger community, why millennials have left the church, to name a few. Even as an institution, we find ourselves in a wilderness. So, how are we doing? One place I have found some consolation is in the preface of Volume I of John Wesley’s standard sermons. Wesley gives us some guidance on how we will walk forward together. As Bishop Ward reminded us, the question is not whether we will move faithfully forward, but how we will be faithful. I leave his words on our hearts as we continue to walk this wilderness journey: Are you persuaded you see more clearly than me? It is not unlikely that you may. Then treat me as you would desire to be treated yourself upon a change of circumstances. Point me out a better way than I have yet known. Show me it is so, by plain proof of Scripture. And if I linger in the path I have been accustomed to tread, and am therefore unwilling to leave it, labour with me a little; take me by the hand, and lead me as I am able to bear. But be not displeased if I entreat you not to beat me down in order to quicken my pace: I can go but feebly and slowly at best; then, I should not be able to go at all. May I not request of you, further, not to give me hard names in order to bring me Continued….. PleasantGreenUMC.org

Wilderness Ways

Wersquore about a third of the way through this season of Lent The smudges of ash have been wiped off

than I am willing to admit) when I will go running on trails in the woods without really knowing how far the

trail is where it will come out or if it is a loop or an out and back Because of my lack of knowledge about

where the trail leads I often will find myself asking the question ldquoshould I turn back or just keep goingrdquo I

These are questions of the wilderness It just seems to me that more times than not God calls us to

keep going ndash to tread that mysterious path not knowing where it will lead It seems that the church ndash locally

and universally ndash is faced with so many questions about the way forward The United Methodist Church is

into the right way Suppose I were ever so much in the wrong I doubt this would not set me right Rather it would make me run so much the farther from you and so get more and more out of the way

Nay perhaps if you are angry so shall I be too and then there will be small hopes of finding the truth If once anger arise Eute kapnos (as Homer somewhere expresses it) this smoke will so dim the eyes of my soul that I shall be able to see nothing clearly For Godrsquos sake if it be possible to avoid it let us not provoke one another to wrath Let us not kindle in each other this fire of hell much less blow it up into a flame If we could discern truth by that dreadful light would it not be loss rather than gain For how far is love even with many wrong opinions to be preferred before truth itself without love We may die without the knowledge of many truths and yet be carried into Abrahamrsquos bosom But if we die without love what will knowledge avail Just as much as it avails the devil and his angels

The God of love forbid we should ever make the trial May he prepare us for the knowledge of all truth by filling our hearts with his love and with all joy and peace in believing

CHURCH SECURITY TRAINING

Concerns about church safety and security have grown in reaction to several tragic

incidents in churches around the nation As Christians we know the reality of evil in the

world and seek to respond in faithful ways Church security and safety touches on and encompasses many

ministry areas Being equipped starts with information gathering and development of a team dedicated to

assembling a working usable safety plan Four events are scheduled throughout the NCCUMC to start

churches in the process Each event will follow a similar format beginning with worship grounded in a place

of hope and identifying what our beliefs are as Methodists and people of faith

Following worship law enforcement will present about church security and safety Several workshop options

will be presented for the remainder of the event including getting started with a safety team first aidAED

Safe Sanctuaries training and recognizing challenging or dangerous behavior and strategies for calming people

in these situations

There is no charge for this event however we do ask that you register for a workshop so that we will be

prepared for the numbers attending
