What does learning about mathematics look like in the

House?

We filled containers with dinosaurs and counted them all. Who guessed the closest?

Max is using a puzzle to make number shapes like the ones on the

clock.

Danait is counting coins and matching the numbers.

Riley is using the jungle coins app on the iPad to learn about money.

Mathematics - Level 1 Learning focus

“As students work towards the achievement of Level 1 standards in Mathematics, they manipulate and play with objects to develop links between their immediate environment, everyday language and mathematical activity.”

In maths we have been focusing on money. We have been

identifying, sorting, grouping and arranging coins. We

have been conducting simple money addition problems and

consolidating our skills in this area. A number of mediums

have been utilised including iPads, computers, books,

games and the electronic whiteboard. Everyone is doing a

terrific job.

Nathan – I liked going to Donut King. I got 2 donuts

and a hot chocolate for $3.90.

Johnny – I liked going to highpoint on the 223 bus and buying our morning tea.

Josh –We watched a man making pretzels. He had to weigh the dough on scales so they were all the same size.

Levi- I liked going to Subway and buying 2 cookies and a drink for $3.50. I ordered it by myself.

Yaser – We have been reading the 223 bus timetable so we know what time to catch the bus to Highpoint and back to Rosamond.

J7’s Money Maths Monica - I enjoyed catching the bus with Georgie and buying my morning tea.

During Semester 2, J7 will be focusing on ‘Time’ and ‘Money’. We will be going on a weekly excursion to Highpoint. We will catch public transport and buy our morning tea. To prepare for our weekly excursion we are reading timetables, different menus and working out the cost and change from $10.00.

Printing Money in the Art Room!

We had some fun making money in the art room! Students in J6 were encouraged to draw and paint with pastels and ink, their own designs on rectangles of paper. Some students chose hearts, others fish, others stripes and spots. We decided to use the same denominations that we use in Australian notes, so I busily cut out 1s, 2s, 5s, and lots of 0s!

Hassan finishing off his note.

Our notes waiting to dry.

When the ‘money’ sheets were finished, we as group, made up the numbers and pasted them on the sheets. We then did a tally of all our notes. We ended up with 3 5’s, 4 10’s, 6 20’s, 4 50’s and 3 100’s. We also practised counting in 5’s and 10’s. Isabella Forbes decided that she would also make a set of Rosamond Notes with the figure head being Rob and Kate. How sweet!

Cheers from the art room, Deb.

S2 have regularly been practicing their money maths skills whilst at Highpoint. Students have had the opportunity to recognise and select coins and notes to purchase a food and/or drink item.

The class have had the opportunity to support and practice their money maths skills by using technology such as the ‘jungle coins’ app on the iPad.

Below are websites we have used to practice recognising coins and notes, adding different amounts of money together and working out change.

So far this year for maths I have done addition and place value, which I needed help with. I was treating some of the 10/s like 100/s so was getting them wrong. Apart from that everything was not

hard. Some math sums were challenging others I knew by heart. I also did times tables, subtraction and adding up and money maths. I learnt how to use change. I did percentage. I did measurement. I have done lots of maths this year. By Luke I love money maths because you learn how to pay money at the stores. Money maths is buying something on catalogue and then finding out how much the item costs. I like counting money because counting is good for brains. It was fun because it is easy. Sue helped me. My favourite things are upsizing money because I got lots of money. Maths worksheets are easiest for me because I can count myself after I finished my work. I have a calculator. By Khaled For Maths in S5 some of the things we do are maths worksheets which include addition, subtraction and times. Other than worksheets we also do time involving clocks and my favourite math subject would be money maths where we can pick items for each other out of JB catalogues which gives us confidence in going out and buying stuff. We also look up online store catalogues which helps give us confidence in buying more expensive things. In money maths we also combined and exchange money which we call upsizing or rounding up. By Alex My favourite maths is worksheet because I like times tables, times and subtraction. I like adding up but some answers were hard to add and I like doing maths because maths is my favourite, and money maths, because every week we do money. My favourite is to upsize the money in money maths. By Mohamed

We do money maths to get the shop went to get the catalogue for it. We do the maths on worksheet. Telling the time we upsize the change. We do maths at Highpoint. By Kane In S5 we do money maths, bus time tables and we learn to tell the time and I do maths and take away sums. I like doing maths sheets in S5 because I find it simple and I like a challenge. We do money maths. The hardest thing in maths is time. I find maths a great thing to learn in life. It can help me get a job. I like to round up money and percentages. Last time we did maths we did measurement and graphs. I think it’s a bit hard but there is something to learn, but that’s why we go to school. By Tristan In Maths we did addition, subtraction, times tables and did tell the time. We write the answer of each addition, subtraction, times table. It started with easy first and then it gets hard. We did the clocks too we write the time and trace the clock. We use the calculator to self-correct to see if it is correct or wrong. We also did per cent, measurement and times one per each 10 each, cent/century/centurion 100. We did percentage of. We did take away 10% to 90% from every 100. We did the missing number times table. We did ten at the first number is ten times, second number is _, and the equal number is _0 missing tens, and zero at the ones. By Thuan

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN EXITS?

Last week was a very busy week in Exits. Last Monday we went to the MCG and Sports Museum. This was the first of the many excursions we have planned for this term. We travelled there by bus and train, so we had to do our research first to make sure that we caught the right train and were on time for an 11:00am start. When we arrived at the Sports Museum we viewed the 2012 Olympic Displays before going to the ‘Game On’ area to play interactive games. After lunch we were taken on a guided tour of the MCG by Barry one of the volunteers there. At 1:30pm we made our way back

to Rosamond School. This week we are going to Footscray Market to do some Maths activities and next Wednesday we are going to Phoenix Youth Centre in Buckley Street Footscray.

TAFE TAFE has started for Term 3 and there are some new and interesting courses for us to try. Greg, Tessa, Kenny, Kirstie, Peter and Dean are making bedside tables in furnishing. Shae and Tegan are learning to prepare and cook delicious meals in Hospitality. Timothy, Liam, Hassan and Daryl are planting seeds and cuttings for the TAFE end of term plant stall. Jye, Andrew and Aiden are making their own way to Kangan at Docklands for Auto.

BACK TO WORK It’s back to work for the Exits. Timothy, Peter, Greg, Daryl and Kirstie are working together at Collingwood Children’s Farm. Hassan is working at Coles and Tegan at Safeway. Tessa is working with the 2 year olds at Kinder Haven and Shae is working with the babies at Douta Galla Child Care Centre. Gheorghe is learning new skills at Sign Wave and Liam is pulling bikes apart at Kawasaki. Kenny is working hard at Dimmeys and Jye is making excellent progress at John’s Auto and Tyre Service. Dean is working at Williamstown Football Club and Andrew is working at Site Access. Aiden liked his Term 2 placement so much that he is working at Hip Pocket Safety Wear again. Well done everyone!!!!
