informed his-SW troops that Allaah-SWT had Commanded him-SW tofight. Immediately, Hadhrat AbuBakr Siddiq-RAU and HadhratUmar Faruq-RAU announcedJihad. Hadhrat Miqdad declaredthat they would never behave likeBani Israil, who when called upon byProphet Musa-AS to fight had said:"you and your Rabb-SWT go andfight the enemy, while we sit andwait here" He further assured theHoly Prophet-SW that they wouldaccompany him-SW even to Barq alGhama (a place in Abbysinia) if he-SW so desired. On behalf of theAnsar, Hadhrat S'ad ibn M'az-RAUannounced that if the Holy Prophet-SW intended to plunge into a riverthey will do the same, displayingsuch courage and valour as wouldplease him-SW. The Holy Prophet-SW was immensely pleased anddeclared that Allah had given him-SW the glad tidings of victory overone of the two, the trade caravan orthe Makkan Army. He-SW swore byAllaah-SWT that he-SW could seethe very spots where the infidelswould be done to death. So, the Will of Allaah-SWT was toprevail. It was His-SWT Will to rootout the evil and uphold the truth andto teach the infidels a lesson bypunishing them severely on thebattlefield. This was the firstauspicious day in the history of theworld when the oppressed stood upto fight their oppressors for theirrights. This great task could onlybefit the greatest Prophet-SW ofAllaah-SWT.

It was proved on the battlefield ofBadr that to Allaah-SWT belongs allGlory and Magnificence while allhuman beings are equal. Theirstatus only varies according to theirrights and duties. Therefore, mankind must be governed only byAllah-SWT's Commands no matterhow much the oppressors dislikethe idea. If only the Muslims of todaycould realise the sacrifices andhardships endured by the Holy

P r o p h e t - S W a n d h i s - S WC o m p a n i o n s - R A U f o r t h edeliverance of the ailing mankindfrom oppression! And if only theycould celebrate the day of Badr asthe day of the poor and the downtrodden instead of celebrating theMay Day in memory of the eightAmerican workers killed in Chicago!

W h e n b o t h t h e a r m i e sconfronted each other on thebattlefield, the infidels presented anoutward display of power and might,while the Muslims only banked onDivine Support and Pleasure.

Although victory had alreadybeen promised, the Holy Prophet-SW prayed to Allaah-SWT withutmost humility and devotion. Thusit is evident that pleading beforeAllaah-SWT has its own merit and isessential for its own sake. But therules thereof must be followed, namely: (1) all means within one'spower must be employed and (2)obedience to Allah-SWT must bethorough. If these rules arefol lowed, the invoca tion isanswered immediately, as in thiscase. It was revealed to the HolyProphet-SW thatAllaah-SWT woulddepute a thousand angels, for his-SW support, who would descend informations against the thousandwarriors of the infidels, though thedeputation of a single angel wouldhave been sufficient, as previouslyrecorded in case of punishment ofthe people of Prophet Lut-AS

The Battle of Badr gives a DivineLa w. W hen ever a ta sk i sundertaken in compliance withAllah-SWT's Command with utmostsincerity, there is nothing to worry,as Allah-SWT assigns that task toHis-SWT Angels whereas the creditfor its completion and the rewardsgo to His-SWT servants. Here, thedescent of a thousand angels took

place, while in Surah Al-'ImranAllaah-SWT promises aid throughthree and five thousand angels inresponse to the reinforcementsexpected by the infidels. He-SWT ,Who-SWT is capable of doingeverything without having to employany means, deputes His-SWTAngels to reassure the Muslims thatthe victory will be theirs.

Besides, the descent of theangels was also meant to be asource of satisfaction for thebelievers. The composure andsatisfaction of the Qalb stems fromthe development of angelic qualitiesas well as an association with theangels. This is why Zikr is said to bea source of satisfaction of the Qalbbecause perpetual Zikr is a qualityof the angels. Negligence in Zikrpaves the way for Satan tocommunicate with the heart, causing listlessness and anxiety.

Moreover, it is entirely uptoA l m i g h t y A l l a h - S W T, t h eOmnipotent, to manifest His-SWTSuccour the way He-SWT wants to,through the angels or without them.It is He-SWT Who-SWT prevails, the Wisest, Knowing exactly when, where and how succour is to beprovided. It also indicates the levelof Fana-fi-Rasul enjoyed by theCompanions-RAU; for Allaah-SWTCommanded the angels toaccomplish the mission undertakenby them, to an extent that theywitnessed the angels mounted onhorsebacks with white turbansjoining the battle. Many a Ahadithcorroborate this fact.

As a result of this battle seventychieftains of the enemy were killedin action and seventy were takenprisoners. The Makkans returned inhumiliat ion with their entireleadership almost collapsed

The English Tafseer of Quran

The Execution of Command andits Rewards

Allah-SWT ‘s Commands areabsolutely true and must beobeyed regardless of how

such acts of obedience mayoutwardly appear. To fight theM a k ka n s a t B a d r w i th o u tmanpower, weapons and logisticsduring the scorching summer andthe month of fasting was apparentlysuicidal. It was at this time that theHoly Prophet-SW was informedabout the trade caravan of theMakkans, headed by Abu Sufyan, returning from Syria richly laden. This caravan was a joint venture ofthe infidels to raise funds in order tofight the Muslims. So important wasthis venture that the caravan wasescorted by seventy mounted andarmed men of which forty were thechieftains of Quraish. Allaah-SWTCommanded the Holy Prophet-SWto go forth and foil the evil plans ofQuraish and its accomplices. Thusthe Holy Prophet-SW announcedthe departure for the missionassigned by the Almighty. Many didnot have any means of travelling, while some had other reasons fornot being able to go. Neverthelessthe Army of Islam, comprising threehundred and thirteen noble souls, seventy camels, two horses and sixarmours and approximately eightswords set out, in execution ofAllah-SWT's Command. When theyarrived near Badr informers weresent to get an update on the enemycaravan. They found that the

situation had radically changed. The caravan, getting a wind of theapproaching Muslims, had changedits course and had got away safelyby moving along the coastline, whilean army of one thousand warriorsfrom Makkah were heading towardsMadinah on receiving a request forhelp from the caravan.

During consultations thatfollowed the new development, some of the Companions-RAUsuggested that since the caravanhad escaped, a clash with such abig and powerful army from Makkahshould be avoided. They tried toconvince and persuade the HolyProphet-SW to avoid fighting not forreasons of their own safety but forthe apparent threat to the missionthat was held so dearly by the HolyProphet-SW as well as out ofconsiderations for his-SW personalsafety. This apprehension was later

endorsed by the Holy Prophet-SWwhen he-SW raised his-SW handsin prayer in his-SW Command Postat Badr. After arraying his-SW ill-e q u i p p e d a n d t h o r o u g h l youtnumbered Army for the battle, heimplored: "O’ Allah-SWT ! I havebrought forth with me the entireIslam in Your-SWT Cause. If todaythey are routed, there shall never beanyone to bow his forehead inprostration before You-SWT ." TheHoly Prophet-SW improvised a flagfor his-SW Army from the scarf ofhis-SW beloved wife 'Ayeshah-RAUputting his-SW honour at stake inthe Cause ofAllah-SWT, with a trustthat. He-SWT would never permit itto be trampled over by the enemy. The Companions-RAU suggestionto avoid the battle has beencriticized by some out of sheerignorance.

However, the Holy Prophet-SW

as the Titanic".Michael Henderson of the Times

in London maintained that "an eracame to an end, beyond allargument", adding that it ended witha submission so feeble that "theyears of West Indian dominationappeared to be a trick of the light".

"The only thing the West Indiesnow require is a completeoverhaul," was the advice of SamiulHasan of Pakistan's leading Englishnewspaper, Dawn. "If the teamremains as disparate as it currentlyis, they may be up for greaterhumiliation."

"H um i l ia t io n" is a w ordrepeatedly used since in referenceto West Indies cricket, not leastfollowing the defeat in Hobart, officially by an innings and 212 runs,in truth by considerably more.

In contrast to the star-studdedsquad in Pakistan, seven of theWest Indies XI decimated in Hobartwere on their first tours of Australia, four were under 25, among themtrainee captain Jason Holder, fiveothers under 30. Only five had 30 ormore Tests to their name. The teamis eighth on the ICC Test rankings.

They were reminded, time andagain, by the Australian media thatWest Indies teams hadn't won aTest in Australia since 1997, a fewmonths before they had been swept

clean by Pakistan. It was made plainthat, in the circumstances, it wasbetter they weren't there. As AdamVoges and Shaun Marsh poweredto their record 449-run partnershipin Hobart, Greg Baum wrote in theMelbourne Age that they were"bowling, instead of dot balls, slotballs, rot balls and feed lot balls".

It was browbeating enough totest the toughest of characters. Theinvolved support of the experiencedfew was essential; in Hobart itwasn't evident. Ian Chappelldescribed the performance as a"disgrace", the body language as"terrible", and spoke of a few easilyidentifiable players who needed "akick up the backside".

Michael Holding was on thesame page after the Pakistanseries, where he was a TVcommentator. "Some of the playersI watched in Pakistan did not havethe right attitude or commitment," hewrote in his column in the CaribbeanCricket Quarterly. "They didn't seemto understand what it means to thepeople of the West Indies to have ateam that is playing proper cricketand they weren't prepared to put inthe effort."

The row over the captaincy wasthe troubling backdrop in Pakistan. The selectors nominated Larainstead of the incumbent Walsh; the

WICB directors knocked them backand returned to Walsh. Dulyangered, the Trinidad and TobagoCricket Board passed a stronglyworded resolution that waspresented to the WICB's generalmeeting at the start of the tour.

"Examining the evidence, wehave come to the conclusion thatthere is a calculated plot to tarnishthe image and internationalreputation of Brian Lara, using hispast indiscretions as the basis forsowing the seeds of destruction," itread. "The Trinidad and TobagoBoard stands in defence of itsnational hero and its world-classperformer."

Fazeer Mohammed, in Pakistanfor Caribbean press and radio, ashe now is in Australia, reported that"persistent newspaper reports inPakistan of Lara-inspired rifts withinthe squad succeeded in throwinghim off his game". His returns in sixinnings were 129 runs at 21.5. Bythe time England arrived in theCaribbean three months later, hehad taken over from Walsh ascaptain, leading West Indies to a 3-1series triumph.

Since being installed as chiefselector in 2014, Lloyd hasrepeated a comment he made in1997, almost word for word. "Ourcricket has been going down forquite a while and urgent action isrequired to arrest the slide," he saidback then. "We have to look closelyat our structure and see how ourplayers develop from an early age."

In his present role, he has optedfor youth and pleaded for time forthe policy to bear fruit. Since 1997, ithas become increasingly clear thattime is not on the side of West Indiescricket.

Eighteen years on, WestIndies' thrashing by Australiain the first Test in Hobart last

weekend bears uncanny similaritiesto their predecessors' routs in allthree Tests in Pakistan in Novemberand December 1997. It is a case ofthe more things change, the morethey remain the same in West Indiescricket.

Even several of theWe s t I n d i e s ' m a i ncharacters from thePakistan whitewash arestill involved. Clive Lloyd,then manager, is nowchief selector. CourtneyWalsh, the captain at thetime, is selector on tour inA u s t r a l i a . C u r t l yA m b r o s e , W a l s h ' sfearsome partner in pace,is the team's bowlingconsultant. Head coachPhil Simmons batted inthe middle order inPakistan, Stuart Williamsopened. They were inHobart as head coachand his assistant.

G r e n a d a p r i m eminister Keith Mitchellremains in the thick ofthings. After Pakistan, hewas concerned enough top r e s s C A R I C O M(Caribbean Community)governments to discuss the state ofWest Indies cricket. He now headsthe CARICOM sub-committee oncricket and is the prime moverbehind the recent damningBarriteau report on the governanceof the West Indies Cricket Board.

The teams in Pakistan andAustralia both went into theirassignments unsettled by off-fieldupheavals. The issue prior to

Pakistan was the captaincy; it wasnever far below the surface. Theproblems leading into Australiawere the confusion over thesuspension and subsequentreinstatement of head coachSimmons, a matter initially triggeredby the contentious omission of theever-dependable Shivnar ineChanderpaul from the two TestsagainstAustralia in the Caribbean inJune.

The media attention on the high-profile West Indians who are inAustralia for the Big Bash T20tournament has been a furtherdistraction, a constant reminder ofthe lingering rift between the playersand the WICB. Counterbalancingth e p ar a l l e l s a r e o bv i o u sdifferences.

Two years after Australia ended15 years of West Indies invincibility

with a 2-1 coup in the Caribbean,Pakistan delivered the first inkling ofthe dramatic meltdown to follow. Inspite of the presence of Brian Lara,Shivnarine Chanderpaul, CarlHooper, Ambrose and Walsh, allestablished among the game'sforemost players, West Indies werebeaten by an innings and 19 runs inPeshawar, an innings and 29 runs inRawalpindi, and 10 wickets, whenPakistan were left 12 to win in

Karachi. Shortly after lunch on thefirst day of the series they were 58for 7. Although they rallied to 151 allout, the pattern had been set.

The repercuss i ons wereimmediately spotted by observersoutside the West Indies. Under theheadline "The Titanic is sunk",Sportstar magazine of India saidthat West Indies cricket eventually"may well be as much part of history

Dark circles are every woman'snightmare. They can becaused by many factors, such

as inadequate nutrition or sleep. Butwhatever the reason may be, there isa solution to help you conceal them. Many of you have asked me how tocover your dark circles. So here is mystep-by-step method:

You must have heard the term"cor rector" used in make-upterminology. What does it mean?Color correction has to do with colortheory. You use one shade tocompliment or neutralize another. Inthis case we need to neutralize theproblem areas. Applying a lightershade on a dark spot without using acorrector will give you an ashy look. When neutralizing, you want to use ashade opposite on the color wheel. Toneutralize the blue/gray areas, youneed an orange color. For fair skin, alight peach or salmon color will work. For a medium to dark skin tone, youwill need a dark peach or orangecolor. This color needs to be darkerthan your skin color to actually coverthe dark circles. Don't get concerned ifit looks too orange; the next step willtake care of this!

Using your ring finger, apply theshade all around your eyes (you canalso apply it anywhere else you mighthave dark spots, like around themouth area). If your dark circles arereally deep like mine then you mightneed a couple of coats of the orangecorrector. My favorite color correctors are:

KryolanDermacolor (really highlypigmented, more for professionaluse)Mac Pro Conceal and Correctpalette.Mac Dual Corrector (sheercoverage).

Eve Pearl Salmon Concealer.

If you don't wear foundation, use aconcealer the same color as your skinand pat it on the problem areas that arecolor corrected from Step 1. If I'm goingto an event, I always apply foundation.Using a stipple brush (I use MakeupForever), apply the foundation all overthe face including your under eyes toblend the corrector.

This step is optional anddepends on the occasion forme. After your foundationis on and you can still seethe dark circles, take alittle bit of concealer andpat down using your ringfinger. For my dailyroutine, I don't apply afoundation. However, because my dark circlesare a lot darker than my skin,Iuse a couple different concealersto get the right shade for me. If you're

lucky, you can find that one shade thatis perfect for your skin tone. If you'relike me, you might have to experimenta bit and find your perfect shade. Use ayellow base concealer on top of theorange corrector for a better andnatural coverage. It will also helpbrighten the eye.

My favorite concealers:

Mary Kay Concealer in yellow

Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer** Tip: Apply the concealer in atriangular shape pointing down parallelto the nose rather than a semi circledirectly under the eye.

Using a large fan brush, powderand set your concealer andfoundation. Setting is important so thatyour creams and liquids don't wipe off

or crease. You can use a spongeto set your powder on but I

feel that the sponge putson too much powder andcan make your skinappear cakey.** Tip: Use a Kleenextissue and lightly wipeacross the face to

remove any excesspowder. There you have it! My 4-

step method to hiding darkcircles. I hope this helps!

Step 1: Color Correction

Step 2: Apply foundation

Step 3: Conceal and Brighten

“It is far better to live like a lion for aday then to live like a jackal for ahundred years" said a bold, brave

and brilliant son of Mysore in Indiaknown as Tipu Sultan. Girish Karnada noted stage and film authorityhailing from the same State as TipuSultan recently opined that if TipuSultan was a Hindu, he would havebestowed the same aura and mantleas Shivaji in Maharashtra. Born on

November 20, 1750 in Devanahalli(present day Bengaluru), Tipu hailedas "The Tiger of Mysore" will alwaysbe remembered as one of the mostpowerful rulers India ever had.Fascinated by Tipu's heroics in myhigh school history class, I undertooka visit to his summer palace inSrirangapatnam. An amazing scholarand a remarkably ambitious king hisheroics are written all over thekingdom. As in life and after death,Tipu is draped in viewpoints thatconverge and diverge depending onone's political prism or mental prison.Collaborating with the French, Tipufought valiantly against the British ruleand was a thorn in their imperialadvances. Using rockets and navalpower he kept the British forces at bayfor a long time. His passion forfreedom from colonial rule is a well

documented stanza of India'splaybook on emancipation. Eminenthistorians have recognized TipuSultan as an enlightened ruler in warand peace. He always led from thefront and any number of his braveryanecdotes generously inflate andinfuriate tempers even to this day. Asa Muslim king in a majority Hindustate, Tipu practiced communal unity.Only 10 percent of his officials were

Muslim and the restwe re f r om t heHindu majority. Hiscurrency carriedimages of Hindugods, like Shiva,Parvati, Sharadaand Krishna. Hepopularized "tiger"as the motif of hiskingdom aligningt he m a s c o t togoddess Durga.

Legend has it that Tipu washunting with a French friend when hecame face to face with a tiger……..thetiger pounced on him. His gun failed towork but he killed the tiger with hisdagger thus earning the title of, "theTiger of Mysore". Emphasizing theimportance of communication andconnections, he introduced the postalrunners. He pioneered road building.Constructed a dam over Cauvery,

developed agriculture, establishedtrade routes overseas, supportedhorticulture, nurtured sandalwood, collected and treasured arts andcrafts. The personal sword of TipuSultan was bought back from Britishcollectors by Vijay Mallya theindustrialist from Tipu's state. had eaten beef.Senior BJP leader, Kailash

Vijayvargiya accused Shah Rukh, one of India’s most recognisableactors, of being “anti-nationalist” andsaid the actor’s “soul is in Pakistan” ina series of tweets he later retracted.

It is not the first time that Shiv Senais involved in anti-Muslim atrocities. Inthe past as well, the party had been inthe limelight for its anti-Muslimsentiments, attacking and targetingMuslim artistes working in Bollywood.

Similarly, former actress, and now

the Human Resource Minister ofIndia, Smriti Irani rebuffed Aamir’sand Shah Rukh’s stance onintolerance in India and defends Modiand his party’s policies by saying, “Iam a living example of PM Modi’stolerance... he forgave me, though Ipublicly attacked him.” Whatever thestance of Indian ministers, theoutburst of Shiv Sena and BJP inresponse to Aamir’s statementsregarding his insecurities, has shownthe real mindset that is workingbehind maligning the Muslim force,

working day and night for anincredible India.

Let’s blame it on the fabric withwhich the Indian diaspora is weavedof. Extremism, anti-Muslim atrocities, intolerance have always beenpresent in Indian traditions be itdemolition of Babri Masjid by Hindunationalist groups and riots thatfollowed the incident, Hindu-Muslimriots in Gujrat or recent cold-bloodedmurder of a Muslim man on eatingbeef, history has so much to offer onHindu extremism towards Muslimsn

“He gets better a little bitevery day,” the source says.“He took a few steps withoutthe walker. It’s very slow andhe’s supposed to go to therehab any day now.”

The 36-year-old formerNBA star was hospitalizedback in October after he wasfound unconscious in aNevada brothel. Toxicologyresults later showed that theathlete had traces of cocaineand sexual performance-enhancing drugs in his system, which led to his hospitalization.

Odom’s estranged wife,Khloe Kardashian, has been afrequent presence throughoutOdom’s recovery period, andhas given several updates onhis status over the past fewmonths.

In November, she revealedto Ellen DeGeneres that Odom

was unaware of what had caused hisbrain injury.

“We tell him that he had a brain

injury, but we can’t tell him how thatbrain injury was caused, because thatwill set him back,” she explained on

DeGeneres’ talk show. “Henever asks why he’s here. Hedoesn’t ask. He’s reallyconfused a lot — sometimeshe knows who the president isand h is b i r thday, andsometimes he thinks he’s 26,and I say, ‘I bet you wish youwere 26, so do I!’”

Later that month, she toldthe Today show that doctorsinitially warned her Odom onlyhad a few hours to live.

“It is safer to be a cow in India thanto be a Muslim,” said IndianCongress leader Shashi Tharoor

while speaking at a parliamentsession recently.

Modi government has been undersevere criticism from different circles, especially the Indian opposition overrising incidents of intolerance andhatred in the country.

In his speech, Mr. Tharooraccused Modi of encouragingintolerance, communal hatred andminority security in the country whilesaying, “You can’t promote ‘Make inIndia’ abroad while there is still ‘Hatein India’.”

Vice President of Lok Sabha,Rahul Gandhi has also been vocalabout growing intolerance andshowed his concern while speaking toa full house of members at aparliament’s session.

He spoke about the safety ofMuslims, especially those who areserving at important posts in defenceinstitutions. He cited the example ofM. Akhlaq, father of an Indian AirForce pilot M. Sartaj, who got killed incold blood only for being a Muslim anddemanded Prime Minister Modi totake note of brutalities of his partyworkers.

“The Prime Minister talks abouteconomic growth and progress and atthe same time his colleagues talkabout sending Bollywood stars toPakistan. Let’s not do that. Till dateour strength has been our tolerancewhere we give our people the spaceto talk,” said Rahul Gandhi in supportof some Bollywood Muslim stars whohave been under severe attack byShiv Sena.

Top actors, Aamir Khan and ShahRukh Khan were accused of being

unpatriotic after suggesting Hindu-majority India was becoming moreintolerant, with members of the rulingBharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadingthe onslaught.

Aamir Khan, one of the highestgrossing Bollywood actors of all time, provoked a furious response when hesaid that a sense of “insecurity” and“fear” was gripping India. Aamir, wholike many Bollywood stars is aMuslim, also revealed that his Hinduwife had even questioned whether thecouple should leave the country. BJP

spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussainwarned Aamir that it was “not all rightto malign” India and told the actor,“Don’t forget, India made you a star.”

Television footage showeddozens of activists burning posters ofAamir in several Indian cities, whilepolice protection at his Mumbai homewas upgraded and social media wasawash with criticism of the star.

The 50 year old was the latest highprofile figure from the world of arts toraise concerns about religious andcultural intolerance since Hindunationalist Prime Minister NarendraModi was elected last year. However, after two days, the actor clarified thatneither him nor his wife Kiran, haveany intention of leaving the country as

he is proud to be an Indian. The brandambassador of 'Incredible India'campaign also said that he is proud tobe an Indian national and does notneed anyone's permission to provehis Indianness.

A week after Aamir Khan spokeabout the growing intolerance in thecountry, Bollywood actor Shah RukhKhan has said that one does not needto prove his patriotism, according toIBN.

Extending a hand of support toAamir, he also said that he will now be

addressing only those issues onwhich he has detailed knowledge, reported ibnlive.com.

“You don't have to be proving yourpatriotism in any other way, except forthinking good for the country anddoing good. You have to work for thebenefit of the country. If I work for thecountry in the kindest way in what I amgood at, my country is going to benefitfrom that. But if I am corrupt, andregional about it, I will be harming mycountry,” the report said, quotingShah Rukh.

Shah Rukh Khan sparked a similarfurore earlier in November when hereferred to “extreme intolerance inIndia” after the lynching of a Muslimman in October over rumours that he

Happy new year to all readers!

I am sure the world, in general, andPakistan and India, in particular, isgoing to see good things coming in

2016. Sheer optimism, isn't it?But, then, optimism is going to

keep us on track. Track threediplomacy, I call it. We have heardmuch of track two diplomacy andwe've seen it working in Pak-Indiarelationship in the past. But wehaven't heard of track threediplomacy. At least not the kind I amgoing to discuss here.

Close to 1.5bn people live in Indiaand Pakistan and most of them haveremained in the grips of fear andtension for decades. There areseveral reasons for this but the mostimportant one is that we have beenconditioned mentally, thanks totypical Pak-India political and militarynarratives, to doubt each other, tonegate each other, to fight with eachother and to make life hell for eachother.

But 2016 is going to liberate usfrom this mind-set, not once and for allbut slowly and gradually. That is theword taking rounds in the spiritualcircles of the two sides that are boundtogether with generational affiliationsof certain spiritual orders including themost famous Chishtia Order.

My Shaikh, Huzoor Ahmed Shah, used to say Pakistan and India wouldcome closer to each other and I'msure I'm going to see it. Why I seesigns of this happening now is thatpeople of both sides have sufferedenough and have gone throughenough troubles to afford furtherd e t e r i o r a t i o n i n P a k - I n d i arelationship. Far from the maddeningcrowds of bustling towns and cities ofthe two countries, there are noble

souls on both sides of the borderswho believe in the oneness of theone-and these are the people whoseprayers are going to be answerednow. Or so I hope. By the time thiswrite-up is published tens ofthousands of newspaper pageswould have been fi l led withinformation and analysis about thede v e l op m e n t s i n P a k - I n d iarelationship centered mainly on thehistorical meetings of the Indianforeign minister with her Pakistanicounterpart and PM Nawaz Sharif onthe sidelines of the Heart of Asiameeting in Islamabad. Thousands ofairwave hours of TV channels wouldhave been permeated with thebreaking news and broken analysis ofthe events revolving around Pak-India relationship.

But my belief that Pakistan andIndia would come closer to eachother, or at least they would begin tocoming closer to each other from2016 is rooted in something else. It isrooted in one simple thing: hundredsof millions of innocent people in bothcountries are earnestly looking for amore peaceful region, almost all ofthem are praying for it and some ofthem are working behind scene tomake this happen. Among them arenot only track two experts but somenoble souls, let's call them track threepeople-people who pray, peoplewhose job it is to pray and people whonever expect anything in return.

I know all of this sounds weird touninitiated ears. But for the ears thatare trained to listen to the voices thatremain unspoken in the ordinarysense of the word, this is not a nearcertainty; it's a reality! A reality at onesphere of cosmic life, restless tobecome the reality of the anothersphere…

So, let's pay our thanks to AllahAlmighty for all the blessings Heshowered upon us in the year 2015and let's prepare ourselves forreceiving the blessings that are oursin 2016. But, in order to let thoseblessings manifest in our individual, social and political lives we'll have towork upon ourselves. And all workstarts with belief. Mere actions are notgoing to take us anywhere if theyremain off-colour in belief.

The world is going to be a saferplace in 2016 than in 2015 andPakistan and India are going tobehave in 2016 and our belovedKarachi is going to see happinessoozing from the hearts of people! That's my belief and that I am sharingwith my readers. Some of you wouldcompulsively dismiss this mereoptimism. That I know. But what else Iknow is that some of you, may be notmore than a few hundred, wouldcompulsively would say amen to myprayers. That actually would set thewheels of optimism in motion and thatalone is the purpose of this write-upn

JEDDAH: As soon as news ofsome women candidateswinning municipal council seats

from Makkah region came out, therewas celebration by voters on Sunday.

Saudi Arabians voted 17 womeninto public office in municipalelections in the conservative Islamickingdom on Saturday, the first to allowfemale participation, a state-alignednews site reported on Sunday beforeall official results were announced.

“Recognizing women’s role indecision making is a step towardequality,” said Ali, who congratulatedSalma Al-Otaibi for her election to thecouncil of the Madrakah region ofMakkah.

The other two women who won theelections from Makkah region are Dr.Lama Al-Sulaiman, vice-chairman ofJeddah Chamber of Commerce andIndustry, and RashaAl-Hifzi. They areamong the 19 women who won in thehistoric elections.

For the first time in the history ofSaudi Arabia, women were allowed tovote and stand as candidates inmunicipal elections on Saturday.

Such was the enthusiasm amongwomen that Naela Mohammad SalihNasief, a 94-year-old grandmother, was among the women as young as19 years old who exercised theirfranchise.

Salih Nasief said she is an open-mind woman and that the election isonly the beginning for Saudi womento get their rights.

Sahar Hassan Nasief, an activistand retired lecturer from KingAbdullaziz University’s English andEuropean languages department, said women comprise almost half of

the population in the Kingdom, soparticipating and winning in theelection allows them to talk aboutwomen’s rights and contribute in thedevelopment of the country.

She said that winning the electionoffers a good chance to women toraise their voice over issues such asdi vo rc e, mar r i age , women ’sretirement and insurance.

Wafa Abu Hadi, a Saudi writer, said: “It reflects a broader change inSaudi Arabia regarding women’srights and will stop those fromcommenting that the Kingdom is notgiving rights to women.”

Maha Saeed Al-Faiz, a prominentSaudi fash ion designer andb u s i n e s s w o m a n , s a i d t h eparticipation of women in theelections and their victory will pavethe way for Saudi women to play abigger role in society.

“They will be able to solveproblems pertaining to women andsuggest amendments to laws that areunfavorable forwomen. It willparticularly helpbusinesswomen.”

M u n i c i p a land Rural AffairsMinister AbdulL a t e e f A l -Asheikh, who isa l s o t h epresident of theG e n e r a lCommittee forthe MunicipalElections, saidc i t i z e n s ’interaction with

the elections and their awarenessabout the importance of the councilsensured that they voted for the bestcandidates.

Even expatriates living in theKingdom praised the participation ofwomen in the elections. JamilRathore, secretary general of PJF;and Azmat Ali, head of the Global NRIgroup; said participation of women isgreat news and it’s a new beginningfor Saudi women and a significantstep toward having a more inclusivesociety. Even if women don’t winmany seats, just going through thisprocess is important as it will bringpositive changes, he added.

Judea bin Nahar Al-Qahtani,spokesperson for the GeneralCommittee for Municipal Elections, said the citizens participated inelections with enthusiasm. “However,235 candidates, nine of them women, were stopped from participating dueto violations, and they were penalizedwith SR50,000 each”n

perpetrated violent acts towardWestern targets in the United Statesor abroad, a chorus of TV punditsand politicians demand in earnestthat all Muslims take responsibilityfor the actions of the terrorists, andd o “ s o m e t h i n g ” a b o u t i t .Notw i ths tand ing that manyAmerican Muslims opposed the IraqWar, which arguably facilitated thebirth of ISIS, American Muslimcivilians are expected to now takeresponsibility for the elimination ofISIS in America. This expectationimplies that the local cardiologist, grocery store owner and stay-at-home mother in their mosquebasements, and not adequate guncontrol, will somehow prevent allfuture acts of mass shooting byMuslims. My teenage daughter, withher headscarf, is thus seen as notdoing enough to prevent the violentacts of people she will never know.

As Muslims in America are being

assigned collective responsibilityfor the violence of a few, lookingMuslim in America has becomeincreasingly dangerous since 9/11.Sikhs have been targeted for hatecrimes because of their beards andturbans; Muslims like the dentalstudent Deah Barakat and his hijab-clad wife and sister were shot deadin their home. Tashfeen Malik’shijab-clad picture has becomeubiquitous, and to some, the face ofterror is now a brown woman in ahijab.

Among my socia l mediacontacts, Muslim women are in afrenzy as they exchange ideasabout what to do with theirheadscarves in public. Their ideasrange from disguise, by wearingwinter hats at all time, to defiance,by saying that they can’t beresponsible for the acts of someonethey have never met, to the fatalismof accepting that God’s will shall be

done. Some are planning to take offtheir hijabs at least temporarily until“things settle down,” erasing theirMuslim identity in public. Othershave compared their experiencewith the headscarf to the experienceof Japanese Americans after PearlHarbor, who could not take off theiridentities in the same way as onecan take off a piece of cloth.

I don’t know what is right for eachindividual Muslim woman; I onlyknow I want my daughter to be safe. For that, leaders and the medianeed to examine their hatefulspeech and their false assumptionof collective responsibility. Mydaughter, and the other millions ofMuslim American women, did notparticipate in the San Bernardinomassacre. My teenage daughter ’sheadscarf, or hijab as shecalls it, announces her

religious identity as a Muslim. Shehas had plenty of harassment bystrangers because of her Muslima p p e a r a n c e , b u t h a s n o texperienced physical harm, unlikethe sixth grade student in New Yorkcity’s PS 89 school who wasphysically attacked by three boyswho called her “ISIS,” or the Londonteen whose video of being brutallyattacked from behind as she walkedon a sidewalk was posted on theInternet. But my daughter is gettingready to leave for college soon, andI am afraid for her.

In today’s America, TV showslike “Homeland” propagate wildlypopular caricatures of Muslims aslurking threats, and well-fundedIslamophobic “think tanks” abound.Right-wing politicians have madeMuslim bashing a competitivespectator sport. As made clearthrough various polls, islamophobicstatements carry little political pricewithin the conservative base, sotheir leadership has done away withthe use of code. Their standardmass shooting public messages of“thoughts and prayers” quickly gaveway to declarations of war on Islamwhen the identity of the SanBernardino shooters was revealed, even before the couple’s religiousextremism came to light. Andpresidential hopefuls are not alone.Jerry Falwell Jr. encouraged thegraduates of his Liberty College to

carry concealed guns as means ofending “those Muslims before theywalked in.” Even President Obamain his Oval office address after theSan Bernardino massacre called onMuslim communities to do more toroot out extremism, as if thecouple’s intentions were known totheir community and it was thecommunity’s inaction that causedthe carnage. It is, then, no surprisethat there has been a surge in hateincidents against Muslim women inhijab who are easily identifiedbecause of that telltale piece of clothon their heads.

While mass casualty attacks inAmerica have unfortunatelybecome a regular occurrence, women rarely commit these acts.Tashfeen Malik, however, was notthe first. In June 2014, AmandaMiller and her husband, Jared, slaughtered two police officers at apizzeria, then draped a yellow flagon their bodies, along with aswastika-adorned manifesto. Theythen burst into a Wal-Mart wherethey killed a civilian before killingeach other following a shootout withpolice. They are believed to havebeen inspired by the SovereignCitizen’s Movement, described bythe Southern Poverty Law Centeras a fast-growing subculture withanti-government beliefs. And yet Idoubt many white mothers worriedtheir daughters’ safety wasthreatened by a violent backlash inthe months that followed.

One of the unspoken corollaries

of being a member of a minority isthat one is judged by the acts of thecommunity’s outliers. While theOklahoma City bombing, theNewtown massacre or theCharleston church shooting did notbring a spotlight on white men ofAmerica, because we understoodthe attacks to be the acts of outliers,Muslim Americans have notexperienced such benevolenttreatment. Though the hate crimesdirected at Muslims are committedby low-level, often marginalcharacters, the rhetoric blaming thecommunity for individual acts is byno means a fringe phenomenon.Whenever Muslim individuals have

Hundreds of people of all differentfaiths -- Christian, Jewish and Muslim-- came together under one roof of amosque (MasjidAl-Hidaya) in Lathamto support the Muslim communityduring a time when they say hatemongering and xenophobia is runningrampant.

“We as Muslims cringe whenterrorists say it’s in the name of Islambecause it’s not. That’s not what ourreligion stands for,” said FazanaSaleem-Ismail.

“I think people are scared. Theyfeel this may escalate. This may getworse,” said Dr. Khalid Bhatti of theAl-Hidaya Center.

Rev. Christopher DeGiovineattended to help spread a message ofunity and peace.

“Together we can find a way tocompromise and move our countryforward especially in peace is whatwe need to do instead of this divisiverhetoric we continue to hear in politicstoday, which I think is so destructive,"he said.
