Rosin Dust June 2016
Blue Mountain Old-Time Fiddlers Association
Connecting fiddlers - young and young at heart
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
The month of May was a good month. May
14th found us in Stanfield. Read about the great
show in the Umatilla news. A good meal was
provided by Carol Bell and staff at the Senior
Center. It hammered down rain before the show and
during the show. We hit fog as we started up
Cabbage Hill. I could not drive over 20 mph. It was
the heaviest fog I have ever driven in and it didn't
clear up until we got to Spring Creek. We left
Stanfield at 10:00 p.m. and
didn't get home until 12:30.
May 21st we were
in La Grande with Union
County director Vickie
Hagey. It was a really good
show. Read about it in the
Union County news. The
spaghetti meal was very
good. This was made by the Senior Center. We had
31 entertainers and 7 up and coming
Union/Cove/La Grande lady fiddlers are doing a
great job. We had two new young fiddlers that
joined: Brea Rudd, 9 years old and Dallas Miller
Olmsted who is 8 years old. We also have a new
supporter from Cove. Dawna Burkham. Welcome to
the BMOTFA.
We missed the Sumpter show and left it in the
hands of our Baker County director, Bobby Hunt
who is a great host. Sunshine always brings a big
crowd to our show there.
We left Friday, the 27th to go to Twin Falls,
Idaho for the marriage of our 11th grandchild. The
wedding was Saturday. We will be able to see five
of our great grandchildren while we are there, one
of which I have not seen. We drove there with our
daughter, Jill and her husband, Dale. They are the
parents of the groom. The trip was great and the
wedding beautiful.
May 12th found the BlueMountaineers
playing at Emigrant Springs for seventy -five 5th,
6th, and 7th graders and forty-five adults from the
Portland area. They are studying the Oregon Trail
and wanted our kind of music. Eight of us went up
and entertained them for 1 1/2 hours. They had a
great time and we had a great time. They circled
and danced and played. We played outside from
6:45 pm until 8:15pm and the weather was good.
They were very polite and many thanked us and
said they loved our music. We sold 4 CDs.
I thank all of you who help put up and take
down the equipment at the shows. It is very much
appreciated. I would not be able to do this job if I
didn't have your help.
Thank you for your support

Thank you so much for selecting me for this
scholarship. The funding will help me further my
education at Eastern Oregon University in the fall. I
truly appreciate the tremendous support that I
received over the years.

MORROW COUNTY
The Irrigon show is history. It went well. It
started off with the Star Spangled banner by JoJean
and I. Musicians were Bob Stevens, JoJean Greene,
Bill Meyers, Jo Shay, Julia Milleson, Mark
Ludwick, Win Weston, Michelle Hedgepeth, Denny
Langford, sonny Morris, Charlie Raeder, Tom
Vickroy, Veronica Manis, Joe McCutcheon, Daryl
Wuennecke and Larry Cannon. The hymn was done
by JoJean and I. Back-up only was provided by
Frank Moore, Jackie Tolman, Nadeen Morris, and
Kevin Hedgepeth. The
show started at 6:15 pm
and ended at 9:15 pm. It
was a good show; the
food was good and the
listeners were lively. I
wish we would draw a
bigger crowd, like we
used to.
Not much else is
going on. We did take in the Stanfield show: good
show, good food, and good time. The crowd was
small. We must have shook something loose,
because we have had a couple of good rains since
then.
I hope all that are sick are getting better. I
have no more words of wisdom. Until next time,
keep the music going.

GRANT COUNTY
Time sure flies
when we are having
fun! Greetings from
Grant County
BMOTFA.
Another month has
gone by and we have
sure had a good
time! Ron and I had a
great time in
Stanfield. What a great bunch of players and
friends. On the way home from Stanfield we seen
a lot of hail on the side of the road, we must of just
ahead of that storm all the way to Stanfield.
Back on the home front, Clay Johnson made
it home from China. It was nice to have the whole
family with us this last Sunday at the Out
Post. What a wonderful bunch of people and
music. We had a good turnout of our usual folks
and then to our surprise, three ladies from Burns
showed up. We sure had us a house full.
Another surprise to me was a visit from Joe
0'Connell from Oregon Folklife Network. He
interviewed Ron Phillips, recorded the jam and took
a lot of pictures. Saturday the 21st was a lot of fun
in La Grande. I'm having a lot of fun meeting all the
different musicians. I'm learning a lot.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone at
Sumpter again this year.
Everyone is welcome at the annual Fox
Valley Community Church benefit on June
5th. We start at noon with a potluck dinner, bring
your favorite dish. After lunch we will have a short
service given by Jack Rutherford, then its Music
until we run out of steam... In case you don’t know
where Fox, Oregon is. It is about 25 miles North of
John Day on highway 395.
You ’all come!
Grant County Director
Carl Stinnett
BAKER COUNTY
I should write about
something, but I don't have
anything. We should have
nice weather for the show
here in Sumpter. People are
moving in getting ready to
sell their wares for the week
end. Jamie and I have been getting ready for next
winter, as we have five cords of fire wood so far, to
put in the shed that I have started to build. I look
forward to seeing the people who attend the show
here in Sumpter. I wish all of you a healthy
summer.

WALLOWA COUNTY
What a wonderful month of music it has been
in Wallowa County! The Hootenanny, celebrating
the music of Willie Nelson, was a roaring success!
We had a full house with standing room only at the
Odd Fellow's Hall in Enterprise! It was a pleasure
to play with so many talented, local musicians.
Much thanks to all who attended!
There are many more music events coming up
in Wallowa County for the month of June. The
summer Courthouse Concerts will start on
Thursday, June 2nd. The concerts take place every
Thursday evening, from 5:30 to 7:00pm, throughout
the summer, at the gazebo located on the grounds of
the Wallowa County Courthouse in Enterprise,
Oregon. These concerts include a wide variety of
local and regional musicians, and the best part is,
they're FREE to the public! So bring your blanket
or chairs, and your picnic lunch, and come enjoy the
music!
Music on the
Mountain top, featuring
live music at the
Summit Grill on top of
Mount Howard,
Wednesday through
Sunday from 3:00 to
5:00pm, will start on
June 22 and run through September 20. Ride the
Wallowa Lake Tramway to the top of the mountain,
and enjoy food, drink, live music, and an amazing
view!
Homemade Jam Band will be playing at the
Wallowa County Farmer's Market in Joseph on
Saturday, June 25th
, from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Get
your farm fresh produce and crafts from the market,
and listen to some foot-stompin' music from
Homemade Jam!
Registration is still open for Wallowa Fiddle
Tunes Camp! The camp offers classes in fiddle,
guitar, banjo, vocal, and even dance! The 2016
camp will be on July 10-15 at Wallowa High
School in Wallowa, OR (on the main highway as
you're going through town). Basic fee for the camp
is $175; for an additional $62, you can get 5
delicious lunches! There is also a separate kid’s
session available for just $150, with lunches offered
for $50. For additional information, please call
Carla Arnold at 541-663-0776 (home) or 541-786-
4535 (cell), or register online at

I'm hoping everyone receives this issue of the
Rosin Dust in time to get this reminder about the
upcoming BMOTFA Fiddle Show on June 11 at the
Hurricane Creek Grange in Joseph! At the risk of
being redundant, I'm going to repeat the directions
(just in case anyone misplaced last month's issue of
RD)! From Enterprise, come through town, staying
on the highway; turn right at the Ace Hardware.
Then turn right on South River Street, just after you
pass Dollar Stretcher. Staying on S. River St, you
will pass Carpet One on your right, then Grain
Growers on your left. Soon it will change to
Hurricane Creek Road. Just stay on that until you
see the Grange Hall on your right. It's about 7 ½
miles from Enterprise (63081 Hurricane Creek
Road, Joseph, OR). Just a reminder, the car show
will be going on in Joseph, so unless you're
planning to go see it (always a fun event), don't take
highway 82 up through Joseph because the road will
be blocked in town. The fiddle show starts at
6:00pm, and a barbecue dinner, cooked by Randy
Garnett, will be available for $7.50 at 5:00pm. See
you there!
