Storytelling

Storytelling is a custom shared by people of different cultures from around the world. For some

cultures the only form of recording their histories was through oral narratives and song, and then retelling them to the next generation to ensure the

continuation of their way of life.

Today, storytelling is still a way to keep our memories alive. Do you have a favourite memory of your time in Mt Roskill, that you would like to share with the community — something that continues to makes you laugh, cry or feel inspired? If you have a photo of the occasion, or the place send it along to

Who said there’s no such thing as a

free lunch?

The Cookease group can usually be

found at Wesley Markets cooking up

really nice BBQ food. They are a group

of volunteers who are part of Emerge

Aotearoa.

One of the key activities they do is

provide healthy free lunches to May

Road school with three choices of

sandwiches; ham, tuna, or chicken, as

well as catering to different cultures of

children at the school.

There are different teams of

volunteers, some work in the gardens,

some do fundraising at the markets,

and another team does baking and

gardening so that on Friday school

lunches can be made at a local school.

The group come together to learn skills

that they can use in part time jobs.

Bourne from CPNZ MR

Who/what is CPNZ MR?

Mount Roskill Community Patrol

became the 157th Patrol in NZ

when we commenced in May this

year. Community Patrols consist of

volunteers working closely with the

Police, acting as the eyes & ears of

the community. All patrollers are vetted by the Police and

receive ongoing training. Patrollers are asked to do one patrol

per month, this being a date of their choice. We are grateful for

the growing number of folks who have joined the patrol to make

our streets safer and we welcome more volunteers, so readers

please do not hesitate to contact us on [email protected].

You can also check out the CPNZ web-

site www.cpnz.org.nz and look at the “Purpose” link which

offers a short video explaining about how the patrols operate.

How did you initially get involved with community patrols?

In November 2014 I joined Neighbourly and saw a posting by

Taki Tuhaka, a local family man who was having a meeting with

Garry Miller, Auckland District Representative for CPNZ. Taki

invited others interested to join him at this meeting with the

view of starting a Community Patrol in Mt Roskill, so my

husband Len and I attended.

How long have you been involved and what is your role?

A basic committee was formed on the 1st of December 2014 so

I offered to be the Secretary and the rest is history.

Where do you see CPNZ MR in the future?

Ideally I would love to see the Mount Roskill Community Patrol

with at least 150 Members, with several patrols possibly every

day and night of the week, thus covering a wider area of Mt

Roskill with a greater result in crime reduction.

If you could ask Santa for a present this Xmas, what would

you wish for?

As we are all volunteers and are completely self-sufficient we

have to fundraise for every dollar we can. We have to fund

basic operational costs, uniforms, fuel vouchers (to offset costs

incurred by our patrollers who use their own vehicles), and

more. My present from Santa would be that he provide us with

sponsors from the community who would be prepared to show

us ongoing monetary support, so we could purchase,

insure, and maintain one or more vehicles for the patrol - these

sponsors would be able to have their company logo on the

vehicle thus showing their community spirit and commitment.

From the Manager …

In July of 2011 the Mt Roskill community in partnership with the Department of

Internal Affairs implemented a community-led development project in Mt Roskill.

A local group was formed which is now called Roskill Together to lead the project

and ensure that locals of Roskill help drive, inform and define the project.

A lengthy consultation process occurred, where residents shared their stories of

life in Mt Roskill/Puketapapa, and what changes they would like to see that could

improve their lives, and enhance their communities overall wellbeing.

The information gathered during the consultation phase, helped to inform the

development of a Community Action Plan. The plan provides a solid foundation for Roskill Together to

facilitate community led development activities within Mt Roskill/Puketapapa.

What is key in the implementation of the plan is the ongoing community and resident engagement at the

heart of the organisation’s planned activity. This ongoing, two-way conversation will enable Roskill Together

to continue to identify needs as they arise and respond in a structured and timely manner in delivering

community outcomes.

The identified initiatives should; respond to a need, have clear objectives, benefit to community members,

and have realistic timeframes and outcomes.

These initiatives should sit within one or

more of the following themes:

Community Safety

Health and Wellbeing

Growing Community Connectedness

Pride in Mt Roskill and Improved Local

Environment

Improved Employment Opportunities and

Local Economy

Our approach to implement the plan

includes:

Walker Talker – face to face interaction

Consultation – information and data

gathering, surveying

Events – community led – planned,

driven and implemented

Community forums – information

gathering, analysis, evaluation

Communication: Social media Facebook,

Website, E Bulletin, newsletters, flyers

Roskill Together Committee, Volunteers

and Champions: leadership, ongoing

engagement and input

Forming strong collaborative partnerships

We invite you to drop in to the office, or call us if you want to know anything about the

plan, or if you want to be involved in any way we would so appreciate your input and

assistance.

To those stakeholders who partnered with us, and the many volunteers who helped

throughout the year THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Of course a lot of this work cannot be

done without volunteers, and dedicated staff …Nga mihi aroha kia koutou.

New Committee

Roskill Together Committee has recently inducted four new

members Darryl Reid – Roskill Village, Tilli Leilua – Global

Lighthouse, Rebecca Tumanu – Resident and Cliff Wilton

past Roskill Together staff member. Each of these people

bring a fresh range of skills, knowledge and experience that

we know will enhance the work that Roskill Together has to

do in the community. We warmly welcome them to the

committee.

Roskill Together also welcomes anyone who would like to be part of the committee as we now have

vacancies. Where ever possible we try to ensure the committee reflects the diversity of the community,

and that the there is a range of skills, and experience among members.

If you feel you can commit to meeting once a month (Thursdays evenings 6.00pm – 8.00pm) have a

passion to be actively involved, and can represent a balanced view of how to make positive change in

Roskill give us call or email us of your interest (contact info on page 6). Please feel free to talk to any of

the current committee members as well.

Roskill Community Network

It is with pleasure that I an-

nounce Roskill Together, has

been invited by community rep-

resentatives to take over the Co-

ordination role of the network

that had for many years been

supported under the guardian-

ship of Auckland City staff – by

Manawa Udy, and Roger Earp

and of course the lady who

started it all local stalwart

Zena Wrigley.

We thank you for your services

to the community and hope that

we can walk firmly in your shoes

and continue to provide the

quality service and information

that you gave which has

served this community well.

Department of Internal Affairs Evaluation

One of the outcomes of the Community Led Project is that it be

regularly reviewed by Internal Affairs. Roskill Together met with

Internal Affairs staff researchers to discuss progress of the project;

the good and not so good aspects and to update our progress. While

Roskill Together had a slow start we are now in a position where the

implementation of the Community Action plan is having a positive

impact on the community.

Our networks are strengthening, engagement with you the communi-

ty is happening more frequently and you are trusting in us more to

bring the support, guidance and leadership that you have asked for

directly to you and your organisations. We thank you, and look

forward to continuing our partnership relationship with you as we

look forward to 2016.

Christmas is nearly upon us so, look after yourselves and your

families, be kind to others.

No reira ma te atua koutou, e manaaki, e tiaki i nga wa katoa. Nga
