  Rossendale WAN High Level Design

Technical Overview

Rossendale are implementing a brand new primary tier 3 data centre in Wakefield and are

placing core services within this Data Centre. As a result of this a new network infrastructure

is required to connect the remote sites to the data centre.

Rossendale will use a mixture of on premises solutions, infrastructure as a service, and

disaster recovery as a service along with a variety of cloud options. Rossendale currently

has a mixture of public, private and hybrid cloud product offerings. The new core network will

need to ling existing services such as PSN via a VPN from the node4 Derby data centre to

Wakefield.

RBC envisages an MPLS IP Layer 3 network with presentation into each of the sites listed

and the data centre. A primary Fibre Ethernet circuit is required along with an appropriate

backup circuit / method. Consideration should be given to how the backup circuit can be

provided diversely, but cost effectively, to the primary. Respondents should describe their

design and detail how resiliency and diversity have been achieved. Details of how failover

between the primary and backup circuits will occur, along with failover times, should beprovided.

The main site will require a 1Gbps connection into the MPLS cloud. Other sites will require a

100Mbs bearer with options for 30/40/50/Mbps of bandwidth. The data centre will require a

minimum of 1Gbps of bandwidth. The term of the circuits is 3 years plus the option to extend

for a further two years. Respondents must detail how circuit bandwidth would be increased if

RBC did not implement the full bearer bandwidth on day one.

Rossendale will require uncontended bandwidth with class of service (CoS) to support VoIP,

virtual desktops, and other corporate traffic should be provided. Respondents should provide

details of the CoS options and details of the associated Service Level Targets. RBC would

An integrated network that can enable IP communication across all the Rossendalecouncil and partner sites as well as the primary Rossendale data centre hosted in

Wakefield.  Provide high speed connectivity between all connected sites and the data centre to

transfer files, regular business documents, VoIP, SIP, Internet and virtual desktopinfrastructure traffic.

Expansion capability to add additional UK sites in the future utilising the existinginfrastructure.

Provide high availability and resiliency across all sites and the network, allowingautomatic failover when a circuit goes down.

Full managed & monitored service for all network sites, devices, routers, switches etc.  Provide connectivity to Tier-1 Internet transit providers such as Telecity Manchester and

Global Switch/Telehouse London which provides a high degree of resiliency.  Provide 1Gbps and 10Gbps circuits between the POPs, connectivity is diversely routed.

This result in a higher resilient network infrastructure which, in the event of a corenetwork failure, and provide sub-second failover for services delivered over MPLS.
