Being President

By: Honorary Member (HM) Past President (PP) Raymon Huang

First, sincere congratulations to President Deepak Nagrani on his assumption as our 85th President. Our best wishes to First Lady Bianca too.

Being President of a Rotary Club is not just a one-year tenure. It is a three-year commitment – personal commitment. From Day 1 that you are PE. When you are President, there is no need to elaborate the Presidential duties and expectations – the challenges and the intense work involved; the planning and the participation; the need to lead by example. That over, as IPP (Immediate Past President), the involvement and the contributions are expected to go on. As it should all be.

So it is with IPP Mark Wang. He has just passed the Presidential baton to President Deepak.

As IPP, I asked him to reflect upon his Presidency (RY18/19), do some self-examination in the process, and recollect some of the hurrahs and the sob-sobs. Not easy to do both. In this context I posed to him 6 questions.

(1) Raymon: Overall, have you been happy with your Presidency?

IPP Mark: Yes, definitely. I have enjoyed my Presidency. It has been a colourful year in a role unlike any I ever played. I stepped into the Presidency as a last-minute replacement, and I was woefully short on experience. I was a President with the least Rotary tenure. So I did have many missteps! I had to fall back on my training as an economist and my experience as a multi-national corporation executive. An example of a simple misstep – I did not know I had to buy the current year Rotary pins for members. But this was remedied. And helming a voluntary organisation and working with a team of other volunteers who were themselves busy bees, and getting things done, has been a most rewarding experience.

Comments: Well put, IPP! Candid.

(2) R: On your Presidential journey, what would you consider your foremost success among the multi-faceted service performed?

IPP M: At my Installation, I said that I respected tradition, and pledged to “be a President for all Rotarian members, across the board; old and new; active and rare shows; vocal or silent; project-centric or fellowship-centric”. I believe that I have honoured that Rotary tradition and fulfilled my pledge in the performance of my duties as President.

Over and above that, I attended all District events and two RI conventions, back to back, and participated in a large number of projects, local and overseas – in particular India and Indonesia. A pleasant surprise: I was informed I was a Major Donor, five years ahead of my schedule.

Comments: Great!

(3) R: On the reverse side, what would you deem your most difficult one? Why?

IPP M: The sheer workload! The preparation for the endless meetings I attended – 10 formal meetings each month; District meetings, Cross-Club meetings, Sister-Club meetings, etc. A bug bear was time constraint, both for me and my Directors. So delegation and division of labour sometimes stalled. I am thankful to those other members who stepped in to help, and grateful to Club members for their patience.

Comments: As I often said, the Presidential path is never a bed of roses!

(4) R: Most of us feel you have done a great job. Yet there are others who feel you gave too much time to entities abroad, resulting in falling attendances at home. Your comments?

IPP M: I humbly thank the first group. You make it all worthwhile. I disagree with the second group. The fact is I spent very little time abroad. Almost all installations were at the beginning of the Rotary Year, and on week-ends. Yes. I did spend some time in Taiwan, attending Taipei RC’s 70th Anniversary and Tatung RC’s 30th Anniversary celebrations, during which time I also explored the possibility of a Chinese version of our Book of Humour. There were the Pan-Borneo meetings and the DISCON, as well the District Assembly. At home I did make Herculean efforts to better things vis-à-vis our Club meetings, and put several resolutions to members. Yes, attendance could be higher. But we have had a robust year as a Club.

Comments: Pleasing everybody is not possible!

(5) R: As IPP you will need to be much involved in the leadership structure of the Club. Any particular plans in this area?

IPP M: Having enjoyed the great help of my IPP Keith, I will certainly do my part as an IPP.

Comments: Touche!

(6) R: Now that the Presidential duties are lifted off your shoulders, you must be relieved. A few words on that, please.

IPP M: I very much look forward to simply being a Rotarian, one among over a million around the world. This is what Rotary is all about. There are so many meaningful and rewarding activities to participate in. And I have only just scratched the surface. I intend to resume organising ISC projects in China.

Comments: The spirit of Rotary is well embedded in you.

Thank you, IPP Mark for your leadership this past Rotary Year. Indeed, our Club has been agog with so many service activities. Your Board of Directors too has been examples to emulate. We record our appreciation to all Directors too. Last but not least, three cheers for Tracey too.

Rtn Dr Hans Schniewind

President Deepak called on Rtn Dr Hans Schniewind to introduce the Guest Speaker, Mr Vinit Sarangdhar who founded Alpha Quest Pte. Ltd., a Singapore based independent investment advisory (IAM) firm. Mr Sarangdhar not only manages global investment portfolios for high net worth investors, he also conducts training in private banks in the region and speaks at industry events. He has worked in financial markets in various banks in Mumbai and Singapore for twenty two years. Areas of his experience and expertise are currency trading, portfolio management, structured products and derivatives. Mr Sarangdhar holds a Masters in Physics and a Masters in Management Studies.

In his talk, Mr Sarangdhar noted that wealth management has been evolving rapidly in Asia over the last decade. He further added that current economic expansion, well supported by central banks around the world, was leading to extensive growth of financial and real assets. Also of note was the availability of capital which was fueling technological revolution led by smart phones, big data, cloud, artificial intelligence and block chain.

However, the question put forward by Mr Sarangdhar was “Does this whole revolution result into more wealth creation for me?” He proceeded to share some of his guidelines and rules to answer that question. Next, he spoke on how the world of investments was changing with various opportunities, access, products and platforms. Mr Sarangdhar also highlighted how these changes have impacted the age old principles of investments and shared some evaluations of the impact and the path ahead for investors. President Deepak invited Vice President Bala Venkatesan who warmly thanked Mr Vinit Sarangdhar for a fantastic talk on a very difficult topic.

The Guide to Daily Living

Before doing the things we want to do, consider first, the

Precepts of the guide. Ask ourselves these 4 questions and

act upon them:

First: Have I spent some time in self-examination?

Second: Have I spent quality time with my family?

Third: Have I given my best to my work?

Fourth: Have I given some time to someone near and far?

The Guide, in fact, encompasses the 4 parts of the Object of Rotary.

The Four-Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do:

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill and better friendship?

Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
